The British Prime Minister - for as long as there is a Great Britain

So the albino orangutan is on his way out or will be once the 1922 committee can prise his prehensile fingers off the £3,600 drinks trolley.

A new Tory leader and Prime Minister will be announced soon and could be early August.

Boris's legacy bills and here i don't mean the £200,000 No 10 flat refurb but the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill and the Rwandan Holiday scheme for channel swimmers could be struck off. There could be a softening of the stance wrt to the EU OR we could see another Brexiteer given the reigns - the leadership battle rests as much on pro/anti Brexit as it does the candidates stance on Taxation and the Cost Of Living crisis but all that is the future, so what of the now and the runners and riders for the 3pm Downing Street Stakes. Whoever crosses the finishing line first, this thread is for them and those that follow.

    So far the entries are

What's the latest? It has certainly been a busy few days in politics following Boris Johnson's resignation announcement on Thursday.

Here is a recap of what's been happening:

MPs have started throwing their hats in the ring for the battle to become Conservative leader and PM

Former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch has become the latest Conservative MP to enter the race

Rishi Sunak launched his bid on Friday afternoon, with a Ready for Rishi campaign

Tom Tugendhat, chair of foreign affairs committee, and Attorney General Suella Braverman have already thrown their names into the hat

Brexiteer Steve Baker has said he'll be backing Attorney General Suella Braverman's bid

Others tipped to be considering joining the race include former health secretary Sajid Javid, current Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, and former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt

A timetable for the Tory leadership race is due to be confirmed next week and the new prime minister is expected to be in position by September

Ready for Rishi campaign, i think whoever advised the cashed up one on this was clearly working for the enemy

There's a thread about Boris already.

But some astute observations made on that thread a couple of years ago?

Maybe that's a narrative you're trying to hijack?

This isn't a thread about Boris you simpleton, you'd notice that if you got past the first sentence.

well one of my favourites for the job has ruled himself out.

Ben Wallace rules himself out of leadership race

Defence secretary Ben Wallace has ruled himself out of the Conservative Party leadership contest despite his status as favourite among the Tory grassroots.

In a thread on Twitter, he said: “After careful consideration and discussing with colleagues and family, I have taken the decision not to enter the contest for leadership of the Conservative Party. I am very grateful to all my parliamentary colleagues and wider members who have pledged support.

“It has not been an easy choice to make, but my focus is on my current job and keeping this great country safe. I wish the very best of luck to all candidates and hope we swiftly return to focusing on the issues that we are all elected to address.”

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps have announced they are standing for the Conservative Party leadership.

Mr Shapps told the Sunday Times he was ruling out a general election if he was successful in becoming prime minister.

Mr Zahawi has said he will lower taxes, boost defence spending, and continue with education reforms he began while education secretary.

Earlier, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said he would not run.

In a statement on Twitter, Mr Wallace said his focus is on his current job and "keeping this great country safe".

The cabinet ministers join former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Attorney General Suella Braverman, former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch and chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Tom Tugendhat in the race to take over from Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

    Well, no surprise here.....

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi’s tax affairs under investigation by HMRC

Inland Revenue experts are investigating the tax affairs of new chancellor and Tory leadership hopeful Nadhim Zahawi, The Independent can reveal.

HMRC became involved after a secret inquiry was initially launched into Mr Zahawi’s finances by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in 2020. The Independent has also established that officers from the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigated the chancellor’s financial affairs.

The probe was then passed to HMRC, which falls under the control of the Treasury – the department that Mr Zahawi now runs. A senior Whitehall source confirmed that the tax investigation is currently “unresolved”.

It can also be revealed that Boris Johnson, home secretary Priti Patel and the Cabinet Office were all informed of the investigations.

The next one will be just as ineffective, loudmouth and unrealistic and when questions are asked the typical reply will again be like:

Surprised by Ben Wallace taking a step back away from it.

Then again, the country and the economy is still in shit state, so whoever getsthe job will have about a year to get to grips with it. Not nearly long enough.

Liz Truss remains very quiet. I wonder why?

Whoever the final two are will be at the mercy of what remains of the party faithful. (An aging demographic).

No surprise, i am staggered the 1922 has allowed the idiot to stay. He's promoted in a load of people the eventual winner will have to get rid of.

Boris Johnson accused of trying to derail Rishi Sunak’s bid to be next PM

Senior Tories accused Boris Johnson of trying to torpedo Rishi Sunak’s bid to succeed him as prime minister – and of refusing to leave No 10 with good grace – as the leadership race descended into bitter infighting.

As a trio of cabinet ministers entered the contest last night, senior MPs said the battle now risked inflicting even more damage on the party than the fall of Margaret Thatcher more than three decades ago.

One party grandee accused Johnson of installing unsuitable MPs to middle-ranking and junior government posts when he knew he was on his way out “to cause maximum problems for his successor” who would inevitably have to sack most of them on taking office.

“Those appointments were the most appalling thing I have seen in politics,” said the senior source. “It was obviously a move to sabotage his successor’s first weeks in office.”

Another senior figure in the government added that Johnson was so incensed at the way he had been ousted, having won such a huge mandate at the 2019 general election, that he was now intent on exacting revenge on those he saw as responsible, and on influencing events wherever possible from the outside.

“This is not an administration that is going to go quietly. There is a lot of anger about how this all happened,” said the source. “It is clear that much of it will now focus on Rishi. It is all very Trumpian.”

A former vice-chairman of the 1922 committee of Conservative backbenchers, Sir Charles Walker, told the Observer that pleas for restraint were pointless because there was so much bad blood.

“People like me can say until we are blue in the face that the Conservative party should not tear itself apart, but our pleas will fall on deaf ears.

“Clearly the prime minister remains deeply bruised by the chancellor’s resignation. Rishi’s camp will have to soak up a lot of anger over the days to come. That will apply to whoever takes over.”

As for the candidates, the bookies have Sunak well ahead but its early days and he's the only one so far to come out with his campaign message.

Evidence suggests there is a lot of back briefing against him by the Boris camp. He is also seen as going against Tory values by raising taxes. I think this leadership campaign could get quite nasty and further alienate the marginal supporters. We'll see.
