She does have a sense of humor

Tory leadership frontrunner suggested Britons lacked ‘skill and application’, in echo of ‘idlers’ row

    Audio in the link

Liz Truss, now the Tory leadership frontrunner, launched an astonishing broadside against British workers, saying they needed “more graft” and suggesting they lacked the “skill and application” of foreign rivals, the Guardian can reveal.

In a leaked recording, the then No 2 at the Treasury also risked pitting Londoners against the rest of the country by attempting to explain the difference between the capital and other regions in the UK.

Truss, who has put patriotism at the heart of her leadership campaign, suggested the disparity was “partly a mindset or attitude thing”.

The comments were made when Truss was the chief secretary to the Treasury, a post she held until 2019. In the recording she intimated that there seemed little desire to change the working culture so that the UK could become more prosperous.

In the first televised head-to-head Tory leadership debate last month, Truss claimed she had not written the offending chapter and blamed her fellow author Dominic Raab instead.

Raab later claimed that the authors, who also included Priti Patel and Kwasi Kwarteng, had taken “collective responsibility” for the book, adding: “It’s up to Liz to explain why she’s changed her view.”

In the leaked recording, Truss claimed that the book had been “mischaracterised” at the time of its release a decade ago, but gave no detail as to how she felt the passage had been misrepresented.

Truss’s remarks about the productivity of workers outside London could be particularly damaging as earlier this month she was forced to make a U-turn on plans to cut civil service pay outside the capital after a furious outcry from Conservative MPs.

She claimed there had been a “wilful misrepresentation” of her policy – despite her campaign having published specific details – but confirmed she was abandoning plans for regional pay boards for civil servants or public sector workers.

You mean all those UK rail franchises currently battling with union led rail strikes on a massive national scale?

Maybe the European countries who bought those franchises are having second thoughts?

Looks she is widening her lead so release of a vid showing cock in hand would close the deal for her.

In retrospect, dumping Boris was a very bad move.

Not something that anyone normal would have ever imagined being even remotely true . . . but . . . Post-Brexit Britain.

Johnson? = nobody else wants the job!

Truss and Sunak prove that they both lightweight nobodies.

Next time, just pick some senior bod who is sensible enough to recuse himself from the job.

You've just demonstrated why I generally avoid posting on US politics there.

But this revelation of what the Tory party is really about has been interesting.

They are about shafting the less fortunate to help the more fortunate, full stop.

Possibly not the best demonstration, you've had 23 cracks on the Joe Biden thread and only 20 posts on this one.

Dumping Boris should have resulted in a vote of No Confidence in the current Government and a General Election.

Neither Liz Truss nor Rushi Sanak have the leadership qualities required to patch the damaged caused to the Tory party. The failure of the Boris government was a predictable outcome and whoever leads in the Autumn will be riding a dead horse in hell.

Agree, should have been a general election but from a purely political standpoint this silliness ensures the Conservatives remain in power albeit with a completely incompetent leader and PM.

It’s surprising that such an ‘intellect free zone’ as Truss seems to have it sealed already, according to those supposedly ‘in the know’.

I reckon it could end up closer than a lot of people think.

Sadly, the Labour Party leadership has an equally inept leader to challenge the Tory winner.

Not very good for the future of British democracy whichever way you look at it.

I see Michael Gove has just put the kiss of death on Rishi Sunak...by backing him.

Liz Truss and the land of unicorns is still the bookies favourite.

Either result just brings forward the opportunity for Starmer to prove how inept and indecisive he is. Can’t wait.

We had someone in the states that claimed windmills could cause cancer but he’ll be in jail soon.

I don’t think Liz should go to jail. She might be fun (see post #180) although some might feel a little guilty after an evening with her. She’s kind of “special”.

Good luck with the mess you’ve all created and hope you have some extra money lying around.

    __________

A recent survey of Conservative party members – whose votes will pick the next PM – showed 71 per cent were in favour of the renewable energy source.

    __________

Energy bills are already at their highest levels in at least half a century and are set to nearly triple by early next year, reaching well over £5,000 for the average household.

UK households face a £129bn increase in energy costs (5.1% of GDP), to a total of £193bn per year (8.1% of GDP). This means households will face energy costs greater than UK government education spending (£100bn) and the defence budget (£49bn) put together.

Since households have historically accounted for half of national energy spending, the overall costs for the economy as a whole are likely to reach in the region of 16% of GDP.

Rising bills will push two-thirds of UK households into fuel poverty by January 2023.

    • Updated Carbon Brief analysis shows that energy bills would have been £9.5bn lower under the October price cap and £13bn lower in January, if successive Conservative-led governments had not rolled back climate policies over the past decade.

The savings would have been equivalent to £168 per household in October and £220 in January.

These savings would have come from additional cheap renewable capacity (blue bars), more efficient homes (yellow) and new homes being built to zero-carbon standards (red).

He'll have a tough job being 'indecisive' enough to match Bojo's number of 'U' turns.

    And as for his 'ineptitude'...

You clearly don’t lack irony in your current diet of belt fed socialism then.
