Laughable attempt at brazening it out, numpt.

And hardly helped by your later resort to semantics.

Meanwhile, back to that old sa chestnut … what can the UK do now better than it could before BREXIT?

The blinkered brexiteer has to play semantics to defend the indefensible. In reality, the rule changes mean that markets have been lost and trade has fallen significantly.

You should join Truss and gather some more unicorns...

You seem to be mis-informed Troy as to my allegiance in the leadership race to be next PM, the topic of this thread. If you want to continue bellyaching about Brexit, which you clearly do, there is a thread for that.

The celebrated Jacob Rees-Mogg, Minister of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency, did point out that the price of fish fingers had dropped 2% as a result of Brexit.

I think, mike77, you need to realise that Brexit has polarised the UK and this in itself is bad. The UK has turned down a blind alley and there are no good routes to follow. Worse, the path that the UK was following has been dismantled forever; it will never be possible to get back onto that road. It doesn't matter who leads the Tories now, they have as much chance of success as they do finding a unicorn next to a money tree.

Is there any chance that you will STFU about brexit and stick to the thread? You Cyrille and a couple of others have a whole thread to whinge on if you wish to live in the past, furiously wanking each other while talking about the "good old days."

Back on topic. My money's on Lizzie.

Which begs the question, would a leader of the Libs, if PM, be able to fix it?

None of the three main parties have the leadership gravitas.
The issue is soured by an economy in debt due to Brexit, Covid, a global economic malaise, and a minor matter of world war three trying to break out.
Back home the eventual leader will be required to deal with the NHS, immigration, education and defence, as well as the major global issues shown above.

Where to start? It would probably require a crisis cabinet, drawing on the best minds available from all parties, (except the SNP who continue to perpetuate the independence dream).

By acknowledging you can't fix it all immediately, prioritise and be honest about the outcome of that process, who'll lose as a result. British politics has for over a century existed on promises which are never kept (It's not alone on the world stage in that respect).

The problem will be the public, honesty doesn't get you elected or re-elected. As for the parties coming together to work on the solution, won't happen as they are too polarised.

Rishi is right though, there is a crisis and it needs a proper plan not sticking plaster politics where we drift from one budget to the next. Truss just seems to be courting the ERG and making unfunded financial promises and kicking the can to the right.

For the Tories they have two years to show they can behave coherently, with a purpose and to tackle some of the issues, not all, just some. If they fall to come together as a party once this race is over back a plan and work together on it instead of infighting they won't get re-elected.

What has Rishi Sunak pledged to do as leader?

Here's a look at some policies Rishi Sunak has pledged if he were to become leader of the Conservative Party and PM:

*Promises to reduce taxes “once we’ve gripped inflation”
*Pledges to cut income tax before the end of the next Parliament, and plans "radical reform" to business taxes
*Promises to focus on employment by making sure people have the skills they need for better paid jobs
*Says he will honour the goal of reaching net zero by 2050
*Campaigned for Brexit and is committed to reforming all EU laws and bureaucracy that are still in place, by the time of the next general election
*Promises to accelerate NHS targets to cut waiting lists, eliminating one-year waiting times by September 2024 and getting overall numbers falling by next year
*Backs the continuation of existing grammar schools but has not said whether he would allow new ones

What has Liz Truss pledged to do as leader?

Here's a reminder of some of the policies Truss has set out so far:

*Says she will reverse the national insurance rise, which came into effect in April
*Pledges to scrap a planned rise in corporation tax - set to increase from 19% to 25% in 2023
*Would suspend what is known as the “green levy” - part of your energy bill that pays for social and green projects, which costs roughly £153 a year
*Says she will honour the goal of reaching net zero by 2050
*Argues she can be trusted with Brexit despite voting Remain in the 2016 referendum
*Says GP services need to be more accessible in order to reduce the pressures on hospital services
*Pledges to give every child “the best opportunity to succeed” wherever they are from and whatever their background

^ No leader has the mandate to steer the ship anywhere. Dick Sunak has some commendable ideas like cutting income taxes but it'll never get done. Because of this glorious system called democracy.

The permanent bureaucracy just continues adrift. It is all very hopeless.

You speak like you could do better? The permanent bureaucracy you mention is called the civil service in UK. Their responsibility is to implement current legislation. Depending on the ever changing political leadership, that is what they do, or not, depending on how well led and motivated they are.

The Tory mantra is pro tax cuts and small government. Only possible if you forget about Covid, Brexit and the global issues currently affecting the job.Canada, Australia, the US and many European countries are having similar problems.

Communism is not the panacea that you seem to think it is. The solutions are not on you tube or google. It’s not my fault that you were poorly educated, or you wasted your time trying to grow up too late.

After seeing the initial reaction of Liz Truss to that, I hope she never becomes PM.

It was nice she went to help, though.

I can't see Rishi getting the nod from the Tory members, so Truss it is.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace endorses Liz Truss for PM

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has endorsed Liz Truss for Conservative leader and prime minister.

Writing in The Times, he said Ms Truss was "authentic" and had the experience to address the country's challenges.

Mr Wallace, popular among Tory members for his handling of the war in Ukraine, was himself seen as a contender in the race, but ruled himself out early on.

His endorsement comes after Ms Truss and Rishi Sunak took part in the first official Conservative husting in Leeds.

Mr Wallace's article marks his first major intervention in favour of any candidate since the race got under way earlier this month.

He said he had sat with Ms Truss, the current foreign secretary, in "cabinet, bilateral meetings and international summits".

He said that she may not be a "slick salesperson", but that she "stands her ground" and "is straight and means what she says".

He listed some of the issues facing the country, including the economic aftermath of the Covid pandemic, global inflation, and the threat posed by President Putin, adding: "These are not normal times."

"[Ms Truss] is the only candidate who has both the breadth and depth of experience needed to confront these challenges," he said.

He added that he thought Mr Sunak was a "capable cabinet minister" and that he was sure "he could do the job of prime minister".

But he continued: "From day one the new prime minister needs to know their way around the international community as well as the Treasury. Only Liz can do that."

Ballot papers going out. Looking at the news over the past week all i am seeing is a procession of MP's and party seniors lining up behind Truss, no one seems to be backing Sunak, of course they aren't voting but its a good indication on the direction of travel.

Rishi the taxation Chancellor is promising tax cuts by the end of this decade, that tells you how much he understands the public and its short memory.

Rishi Sunak attempts to revitalise campaign with vow to slash income tax by the end of the decade

Tory leadership contender Rishi Sunak has vowed to slash the basic rate of income tax from 20p to 16p in the pound by the end of the decade, in the latest attempt to revitalise his campaign for No 10.

Boasting of the “biggest income tax cut since Margaret Thatcher’s government”, the former chancellor said the £18bn commitment will be delivered by the end of the next parliament if he wins the contest.

But it was immediately seized on as “another U-turn” by a source in his rival Liz Truss’s campaign team, who criticised the policy, saying it was “jam tomorrow”. They added: “People need tax cuts in seven weeks, not in seven years.”

It comes as 160,000-plus Tory members are set to begin receiving their ballot papers to vote for Boris Johnson’s successor, with the foreign secretary widely seen as the favourite after attracting major endorsements.

Over the weekend, however, Mr Sunak’s allies insisted that the contest was still “all to play for”, while Ms Truss, who is ahead in polls of party members, played down claims that she has a clear lead in what she called a “very, very close race”.
