Well they certainly all did last night.

It's a massive indictment of Corbyn that people voted for the utter shit show called the conservative party.

So its between Mordaunt and Truss to join Sunak in the play-off. BBC are going to host debate betweent he final two candidate.

Tory leadership race: BBC to host TV debate for final two

The BBC is to host a live TV debate with the final two candidates of the Conservative Party leadership race.

Our Next Prime Minister will be broadcast on BBC One at 21:00 BST on Monday, presented by Sophie Raworth.

Tory MPs are continuing to vote this week to decide which of Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss will go forward to a nationwide vote by party members.

TV debates have already taken place on Channel 4 and ITV.

The BBC has confirmed that all three remaining candidates have agreed to participate in the debate if they make it to the final two, after Sky News was forced to cancel its own planned debate when Mr Sunak and Ms Truss declined to take part.

Please, please, not Truss, please don't let her be a contender. The very thought is too much to bear.

^ The ERG are behind her and her team a wooing Badenoch, I think she is now the likely candidate to face Sunak in the final vote.

^ The ERG have damaged the Tory Party and the UK, possibly beyond repair. Voting Truss as PM would be the nuke that caused total destruction.

And yet Truss must be the preferred PM for Starmer to get his teeth into? She represents the right wing of the Tory party, and Sunak has even been described as too far left wing for most conservatives.

If Truss makes the final two, which seems likely, the party members will have a candidate they can support.

I prefer Sunak’s pragmatism, but there’s not much for Starmer to get his teeth into.

Economically there is an awful lot for Labour to get their teeth into with Sunak. Especially regarding COVID corruption, which will be a massive story.

Your political instincts remain as sharp as a budgerigar's.

    I said Starmer, not Labour.

Didn't you vote for Truss as next Tory PM, quite early on? How prescient of you.

Im apolitical when it comes to instincts. I just follow the news and have a best guess. You must recall my post on Corbyn’s election as leader?

Quite predictable in the end. So its quite a clear cut decision for the Tory Members, unless Sunak and Truss change their pitches during the intervening 6 weeks

Results in full as Mordaunt eliminated

    What are the next steps?

Now the final two have been decided, what happens next?

Hustings for members of the Conservative Party will be held around the country – starting from Friday 22 July.

The winner will be announced on Monday 5 September after a postal ballot, completed by 160,000 Tory party members.

The final two candidates have agreed to take part in a head-to-head debate on the BBC on Monday 25 July.

It was reported, without substantive proof, that Sunak had some of his supporters vote for Truss in the last round. The alleged logic was that he was confident of beating Truss head to head but worried that Mordaunt might be a more difficult opponent, so he needed to see Mordaunt eliminated.

I don't know what I believe any more, except that I believe these people capable of almost any deviousness.

Mordaunt was apparently the most popular with the Tory members from the final 5 at one point but it also seems that in her absence they prefer Truss if the radio story this morning on the Beeb is to be believed. They think Sunak is going to have a job on his hands to win over the members. Still as they say 6 weeks is a long time in politics.

This is why Sunak has to be such a devoted, traditional Conservative, of course.

Russia isn't denying one fucking iota of gas to Germany. It is European and US politicians turning the taps off with their own hands. Fact.

It was the US and Europe that sanctioned Russian gas to the point that it could not be sold. Russia let the gas flow anyway and got a new bank set up so the flow could continue.

Now the US and EU sanctioned Siemens. And now the NS1 pipe turbine got stuck in Canada because it was not authorized to ship it.

Whilst he won the MPs vote he's trailing with the members....she's a favourite with the EU too

Liz Truss's economic vision remains popular with Tory members

What we have learnt explicitly this week is Liz Truss's diagnosis of the country's economic problems extends well beyond her opponent Rishi Sunak's attitude to taxes.

The foreign secretary is arguing the country has been hobbled by a 20-year economic malaise caused by successive governments of various colours.

From New Labour to the coalition government of the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats and beyond - she suggests there has been a claggy consensus.

Now, she argues, it's time to unleash the Tory tigers of tax cuts and deregulation to jump start the economy.

There is yet more evidence her vision is proving popular with the 160,000 or so people who hold the keys to No 10 Downing Street - members of the Conservative Party.

A poll from YouGov suggests she has a whopping lead over Rishi Sunak.

He insists tax increases that are coming - such as rising corporation tax - are justified given the colossal costs of Covid, and cutting tax too soon could make dealing with soaring prices harder.

Expect him to argue too that Liz Truss should spell out how she would pay for promises like sorting out social care or dealing with the NHS backlog while also cutting taxes.

What has struck me is Liz Truss's diagnosis of what is at the root of many of the UK's problems - sclerotic economic growth - is very similar to what the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer thinks.

Their solutions to address the issue would be very different, but the problem they're trying to solve is the same.

As for Rishi Sunak, we can expect him to broaden his attempts to appeal to Conservative members.

It looks like there'll be a blitz of policy ideas, taking in topics such as crime, immigration and Brexit.

Where possible, and there won't be much chance, both candidates will try to get some rest.

It's been a whirlwind few weeks and one of them is moving house in just over six weeks; their life and that of their families never the same again.

Before then, the longest job interview of their lives. Plenty more scrutiny and jeopardy awaits.
