Today's Sunday morning was far from easy for those vying for the top job in No 10, with many Tory leadership contenders up and about early outlining why they should be the next prime minister.


If you're just joining us, here's a summary of the main developments so far:


Nine candidates have now announced their bids to succeed Boris Johnson: Penny Mordaunt, Sajid Javid, Jeremy Hunt, Grant Shapps, Nadhim Zahawi, Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Tom Tugendhat, and Rishi Sunak.


Taxation is already a key dividing line in the race, with potential leaders setting out how they intend to tackle high inflation, cost of living surges and stagnant growth


Four of the five candidates to enter the race in the last 24 hours, Javid, Hunt, Zahawi and Shapps (Mordaunt being the most recent),have all indicated their intentions to cut taxes

Indeed, the UK system is not perfect but its seen justice of a sort served for someone who has no one to blame but himself, the only failing is it took so long and the damage he did to the party and UK along the way.

The prevailing economic climate is a challenge for all countries. The problem i see time and again is that too much is promised and too much is attempted by party after party and not delivered. Priorities are needed, short/medium and long term and addressed in that order. A return to sensible management of the country, one that focusses on security meaning energy, food and health as well as the continued support to global security is required.

Labour to table no confidence motion

Labour will table a no confidence motion in Boris Johnson's government later today, seeking to hold the vote on Wednesday, party sources say.

What is a no confidence vote?

It's a vote in which MPs from all parties decide whether they want the government to continue. It has the power to trigger a general election and could see a new prime minister appointed.

While any MP can propose a no confidence motion, there's no guarantee their request will be granted.

However, if the leader of the opposition - currently Labour leader Keir Starmer - introduces the motion, convention means the government will provide time for a debate.

The wording of a no-confidence motion is: "That this House has no confidence in Her Majesty's Government."

It needs a simple majority to pass - so it only requires one more MP to vote in favour of it, than the number voting against.

If the government wins the no confidence motion, it carries on as before.

At present, the government has a big majority in the House of Commons so it would require a lot of Conservative MPs to vote against their own government for the motion to be successful.

They are Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi.


Each has the backing of at least 20 fellow MPs.

* Eurozone applications would be tendered, I doubt many would object too strongly.
* Borders are all over Europe - easily manageable to keep the soap-dodgers out.

UK government to table no-confidence motion in itself

The government is to table a confidence motion in itself after rejecting a version by Labour that directly criticised Boris Johnson.

The unexpected move will force Conservative MPs to back the government but will make the vote more straightforward as it will not constitute an endorsement of the prime minister.

“Labour were given the option to table a straightforward vote of no confidence in the government in keeping with convention. However, they chose not to,” a government spokesperson said.

“To remedy this we are tabling a motion which gives the house the opportunity to decide if it has confidence in the government. The government will always allow time for appropriate house matters whilst ensuring that it delivers parliamentary business to help improve people’s everyday lives.”

The prime minister’s press secretary later added that Johnson planned to open the debate ahead of the vote on Monday. She insisted Labour’s own motion including the Commons not having confidence in the prime minister was “not good use of parliamentary time”.

A Labour source said the decision was “madness” and one they expected would backfire. “Not sure Tory leadership candidates or marginal MPs will welcome this,” they said.

Labour reacted with fury on Tuesday night when Downing Street refused to allow parliamentary time for the motion it had tabled. Longstanding convention is that if the leader of the official opposition tables a motion of no confidence, the government makes time for it to be debated and voted on.

Tory whips said Labour’s motion fell outside the scope of the convention by identifying Johnson. However, Labour said the motion had been ruled in order by the House of Commons clerks. It pointed to the 1965 confidence motion, which mentioned the prime minister.

Then there was six, no surprises so far, Tugendhat and Braverman will have to decide who to throw their weight behind.

Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi knocked out of Tory leadership race

The Conservative leadership hopefuls Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi have been forced out of the race to replace Boris Johnson, after the result of the first round of knockout votes was announced.

The remaining six candidates will face a further ballot on Thursday, with more expected to follow as early as next Monday.

Under the rules for the contest – set by the 1922 Committee of backbenchers – MPs needed 20 supporters to be officially included in the election, and more than 30 to progress to the second round.

Zahawi, who was made chancellor last week as Johnson tried to shore up his dying government, gained only 25 votes, while Hunt, the former foreign secretary who lost out in the final stage of the 2019 leadership election, got 18.

Rishi Sunak, the former chancellor, remained the frontrunner with 88 votes, while Penny Mordaunt, a trade minster, took second place with 67.

Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, got 50 votes, while Kemi Badenoch, who quit as a minister last week, got 40. Two candidates just made it over the line – Tom Tugendhat, chair of the foreign affairs committee, with 37 backers and Suella Braverman, the attorney general who was the first person to declare her intention to run last week, who scored 32.
