Pelosi says China "will not isolate Taiwan" as drills ramp up near island

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday responded to China's live military drills around Taiwan by saying that Beijing won't succeed in isolating the self-governing island nor stop U.S. officials from visiting Taipei.

Driving the news: Pelosi made the comments after meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo as she wrapped up this week's congressional delegation trip to Asia that included a visit to Taiwan, which triggered the drills that Beijing plans to last for several days.

    • Pelosi denounced China's military for firing missiles into the sea near Taiwan on Thursday, demanding it "immediately" stop the launches as Japanese officials estimated that five ballistic missiles landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone.
    • There were no immediate reports of China's military firing missiles on Friday, but Taiwan's Defense Ministry said multiple Chinese warships and fighter aircraft were "participating in drills around Taiwan Strait and have crossed the median line."

What they're saying: Pelosi said Beijing had tried to isolate Taipei with action such as opposing the World Health Organization from granting recognition to Taiwan.

    • "The Chinese made their strikes, probably using our visit as an excuse," she said.
    • "They may try to keep Taiwan from visiting or participating in other places but they will not isolate Taiwan," Pelosi said. "They are not doing our traveling schedule, the Chinese government is not doing that."

Of note: Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised concern on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Cambodia that Beijing might be trying to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

    • ""We and countries around the world believe that escalation serves no one and could have unintended consequences that serve no one's interests, including ASEAN members, and including China," Blinken said.

Flashback: China's foreign minister said the day before Thursday's live ammunition drills near Taiwan that Pelosi's Taipei visit was a "farce" and those "who offend China will surely be punished."

Context: The ruling Chinese Communist Party considers the democratically run island as a breakaway province.

China has prohibited use of the phrase "Made in Taiwan" on any product the island now exports to the mainland, and now must use the name "Chinese Taipei" or "Taiwan, China".

Apple is asking all its suppliers to follow the regulation.

Pentagon chiefs’ calls to China go unanswered amid Taiwan crisis

Top Chinese military officials have not returned multiple calls from their American counterparts this week as a crisis erupted in the Pacific over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, according to three people with knowledge of the attempts.

Beijing’s ghosting of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Mark Milley comes as China continues launching missiles and positioning warships and aircraft in unprecedented military drills around Taiwan. Officials and experts say China’s silence is a shortsighted and reckless move that increases the risk of escalation in an already tense situation.

“If the [Chinese military] is operating more aggressively, and in closer proximity to U.S. forces with greater frequency, we’d need these mechanisms even more to promote a safe operating environment,” said Randy Schriver, who served as the top Pentagon official for Asia policy in the Trump administration.

U.S. military leaders strive to maintain open lines of communication even with potential adversaries such as China to prevent accidents and other miscalculations that could turn into a full-blown conflict.

^ To be expected. As Backspin posted yesterday, China has cut ties with the US in a number of areas, including military.

Taiwan’s senior missile development technician found dead in a hotel room in south Taiwan. No further details

The Taiwan missile official died of a heart attack, had a history of heart problems and there were no signs of any intrusion into his hotel room. False alarm (Reuters).

Don't "sources bro" this . Everyone knows that Paul Pelosi has money in China

HK supports central govt's countermeasures against Pelosi's visit; sanctions may cause 'substantial financial loss if economic connection is cut off' - Global Times

According to Pelosi's financial disclosure filing last year, her husband Paul Pelosi Sr had assets of between $50,000 and $100,000 in a San Francisco-based financial firm called Matthews International Mutual Fund which is active in Asia, including Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, reported the South China Morning Post.

Pelosi's family has had millions of dollars on the line when it comes to China, US writer Peter Schweizer revealed in his book, Breitbart reported, and Pelosi's husband was also involved with multiple limousine services, including one that catered to the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing, the report noted.

Pelosi's son, Paul Pelosi Jr, also sought business opportunities in China via two companies, International Media Acquisition Corp and Global Tech Industries Group, according to the report.

If anything those 50-100k disclosures just show how laughably corrupt these disclosures are. Either that or it is a typo.

Someone with 130 million would not pick 50k off the ground of he accidentally dropped it.

Sanction Pelosi and her like, make them feel real and lasting pain: Global Times editorial - Global Times

According to some Hong Kong media outlets, Pelosi's husband and son made a great sum of money from investments in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and other parts of Asia through funds. About half of the Asia Dividend Fund under Matthews Global Investors (Hong Kong) Ltd, founded by her husband, involves Chinese enterprises.

^ What is the big deal with Pelosi having money invested in China? I would guess that MOST investors have money in China. And, a millionaire would stop and pick up 50K if they dropped it. It is a lot of money. They didn’t become millionaires by being careless with money.

Just posting lies seems your m.o. now. 160 countries? Yea, and excerpt from your link:

For example, the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist), the Peasants and Workers Party, the National Democratic Party and others have spoken out in various ways, pointing out that Pelosi's move to power is an extremely wrong, stupid and irresponsible act of hegemony.

The Nepali side firmly supports China's defense of national sovereignty and dignity. Take all action.

The Green Party, the third largest political party in Mongolia, stressed that all countries in the world need to abide by the one-China principle stipulated in UNGA Resolution 2758 and support China's position on Taiwan and other issues.

The Secretary of the Central Committee of the All India Advancement Alliance of India issued a statement strongly condemning Pelosi's visit to the Taiwan region. Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and relevant remarks violated UN Resolution 2758.

You didn't debunk God damn thing.

Almost no countries recognize Taiwan. 160 is under shooting. The Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as Taiwan, has full diplomatic relations with 13 of the 193 United Nations member states

And Taiwan held no elections till 1996.
