    China should not have made the threats unless it really meant it. But what's done is done. They can't turn back the clock. They were humiliated yet again.

    Anyone who supports any nuclear power , waltzing over another nuclear powers stated red lines is a war monger. If China or Russia started talking about building submarine pens in Cuba or something like that (hey Cuba has the sovereign right) , I would not support that either. Not a good idea.

    I recall America saying Crimea was a red line. You were probably filled with glee when Putin took it.

    Nothing has changed.

    The one China policy agreement between the US and China still stands.

    China's policy re Taiwan remains unchanged. They consider Taiwan a break away province of China.

    Cross strait military conflicts continue as they have since the ROC gov relocated to Taiwan.

    The US and other nations continue to supply military equipment to Taiwan as they have since 1979.

    Personally, I would rather Pelosi have avoided the visit but aside from all the media hype, nothing has or will change. Another media tempest in a teapot episode which in a couple months will be forgotten.
    Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

    China has been patting itself on the back lately about how it managed to grow it's economy and military power to one of the biggest in the world. And they've been lamenting the humiliation of 1997 when Gingrich went to Taiwan and Clinton parked a couple carriers in the strait because he could.

    Those days were supposed to be over. And yet , just like 1997, the US comes along and does it again.

    They are gonna snap eventually

    Lindsey Graham was there with a group of other Senators earlier this year. Nary a peep from you.
    Is it because a woman ignored China's whining, and went anyway? Has that got you riled up? Incel drama queen.

    Fag boy Lindsay Graham is not the #3 politician in the US. All I did was listen to what China said. They said it was a red line and they threatened war.

    Turns out so far , Xi is a massive pussy and coward , that allowed his nation to be humiliated in front of the world. Normally that doesn't happen.

    Xi is not Putin. Much to smart to do more than have state media make a big deal out of it and at most authorize the war games.

    As if............

    China has announced unspecified sanctions on US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her visit earlier this week to Taiwan. A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said Friday that Pelosi had disregarded China’s concerns and resolute opposition to her visit to the self-ruled island, which Beijing claims.

    China says it summoned European diplomats in the country to protest statements issued by the Group of Seven nations and the European Union criticizing threatening Chinese military exercises surrounding Taiwan.

    The Foreign Ministry on Friday said Vice Minister Deng Li made “solemn representations” over what he called “wanton interference in China’s internal affairs.”

    China has dispatched navy ships and warplanes and launched missiles into the Taiwan Strait in response to a visit this week by US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which China regards as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.

    For all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

    On the Chinese coast across from Taiwan, tourists gathered Friday to try to catch a glimpse of any military aircraft heading toward the exercise area. Fighter jets could be heard flying overhead and tourists taking photos chanted, “Let’s take Taiwan back,” looking out into the blue waters of the Taiwan Strait from Pingtan island, a popular scenic spot.

    On Friday morning, China sent military ships and war planes across the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait, the Taiwanese Defense Ministry said, crossing what had been an unofficial buffer zone between China and Taiwan for decades.

    Five of the missiles fired by China since the military exercises began Thursday landed in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone off Hateruma, an island far south of Japan’s main islands, Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said. He said Japan protested the missile landings to China as “serious threats to Japan’s national security and the safety of the Japanese people.”

    Japan’s Defense Ministry later said they believe the other four missiles, fired from China’s southeastern coast of Fujian, flew over Taiwan.

    Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Friday that China’s military exercises aimed at Taiwan represent a “grave problem” that threatens regional peace and security.

    In Tokyo, where Pelosi is winding up her Asia trip, she said China cannot stop US officials from visiting Taiwan. Speaking after breakfast with Pelosi and her congressional delegation, Kishida said the missile launches need to be “stopped immediately.”

    Deng said China would “prevent the country from splitting with the strongest determination, using all means and at any cost.”

    “Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is a blatant political manipulation and a blatant and serious violation of China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Deng said. “In response to the US-Taiwan collusion and provocation, China’s counterattack is only natural.”

    China's Foreign Ministry said the meeting was held Thursday night but gave no information on which countries participated. Earlier Thursday, China canceled a foreign ministers’ meeting with Japan to protest the G-7 statement that there was no justification for the exercises.

    Both ministers were attending a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Cambodia.

    China had earlier summoned US Ambassador Nicholas Burns to protest Pelosi's visit. The speaker left Taiwan on Wednesday after meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen and holding other public events. She traveled on to South Korea and then Japan. Both countries host US military bases and could be drawn into a conflict involving Taiwan.

    The Chinese exercises involve troops from the navy, air force, rocket force, strategic support force and logistic support force, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

    They are believed to be the largest held near Taiwan in geographical terms, with Beijing announcing six exercise zones surrounding the island.

    US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the drills Thursday saying, “I hope very much that Beijing will not manufacture a crisis or seek a pretext to increase its aggressive military activity. We countries around the world believe that escalation serves no one and could have unintended consequences that serve no one’s interests.”

    US law requires the government to treat threats to Taiwan, including blockades, as matters of “grave concern.”

    The drills are due to run from Thursday to Sunday and include missile strikes on targets in the seas north and south of the island in an echo of the last major Chinese military drills aimed at intimidating Taiwan’s leaders and voters held in 1995 and 1996.

    Taiwan has put its military on alert and staged civil defense drills, but the overall mood remained calm on Friday. Flights have been canceled or diverted and fishermen have remained in port to avoid the Chinese drills.

    In the northern port of Keelung, Lu Chuan-hsiong, 63, was enjoying his morning swim Thursday, saying he wasn’t worried.

    “Everyone should want money, not bullets,” Lu said.

    The main statements of the Chinese Foreign Ministry:

    - China suspends dialogue with the United States at the level of regional military commands;

    - China cancels working meetings with representatives of the US Department of Defense;

    — China suspends cooperation with the United States in the fight against drugs;

    — China suspends Sino-US talks on climate change;

    - China suspends cooperation with the United States in the field of justice;

    — China suspends cooperation with the United States in the fight against international crime.

    China will impose sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family due to a visit to Taiwan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

    On the one hand it was kind of unnecessarily provocative (not to mention pointless) to send Pelosi there, especially knowing how sensitive this issue is to the Chinese.
    On the other hand it was a real case of the Chinese feelings getting hurted the way they over reacted. Like a baby spitting the dummy.
    If they'd just ignored it it's unlikely anyone would have paid much attention to the visit.

    Xi either has to fight a war or maybe see if the US will settle for a 25 year lease. If he settles for a lease , his govt will fall.

    If sailing a couple carrier groups into the Taiwan strait isn't gunboat diplomacy I don't know what is.

    From Taiwan mod

    PLA dispatched 68 aircraft and 13 vessels until 17:00 (UTC+8) for the activities around Taiwan Strait, part of which had crossed the median line and jeopardized the status quo of the strait.

    They didn't send her there, she chose to go. Biden didn't want her to go.
