An even larger majority of Taiwanese, 78.3%, said they were not afraid of the Chinese maneuvers, even though they included the firing of ballistic missiles over the country. Only 17.2% expressed fear about the drills.

They shouldn't be. As long as they don't fight when the inevitable landing comes, everything will be fine.

    There will be no landing.

If there ever is, it will be the greatest military defeat in Chinese and possibly world history. Not to mention, it would be the largest amphibious assault ever attempted, and the Chinese have next to zero chance of pulling that off.

Oh god, cue more dummy spitting from the whiny chinkies.

The US has announced that they will begin formal trade negotiations with Taiwan, weeks after a controversial visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The first round of talks are expected to begin in "early fall", said the Office of US Trade Representative.

Their discussion will include talks on trade facilitation, digital trade and anti-corruption standards.

Well, if Taiwan wishes for any chance of achieving true independence, the first thing they need to do is wean themselves off the Chinese economic tit. I don't see it happening.

As one would expect Taiwan exports to China are significant but if necessary I am sure Taiwan could find several other countries willing to increase imports from Taiwan.

To achieve "true independence" it must seek recognition from the UN. Mission impossible. Ain't gonna happen.

The procedure is briefly as follows:

The State submits an application to the Secretary-General and a letter formally stating that it accepts the obligations under the Charter.

The Security Council considers the application. Any recommendation for admission must receive the affirmative votes of 9 of the 15 members of the Council, provided that none of its five permanent members — China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America — have voted against the application.

If the Council recommends admission, the recommendation is presented to the General Assembly for consideration. A two-thirds majority vote is necessary in the Assembly for admission of a new State.
Membership becomes effective the date the resolution for admission is adopted.

Still, Taiwan's business and economic ties with mainland China and Hong Kong have grown so large that the region is by far the island's largest trading partner. • About 22% of Taiwan’s imports last year came from mainland China and Hong Kong, versus 10% from the U.S., official data showed.

Taiwan hits record high exports to ASEAN member states

    Publication Date: July 07, 2022

"Taiwan’s exports to Association of Southeast Asian Nations totaled US$70.24 billion in 2021, up 32 percent over the same period in 2020 and the highest on record, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said July 5.

Further analysis of the data shows that Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines accounted for 98.5 percent of Taiwan’s total outgoing shipments to the region, with the major export items being electronic components and parts and integrated and printed circuits."

"In addition, around 3.2 percent of Taiwan’s export orders were produced in ASEAN countries in 2021, up from 1.6 percent in 2018, demonstrating positive results from the government’s promotion of the New Southbound Policy. The ministry added that the region’s manufacturing locations, market demographics and tariff advantages are all attractive for Taiwan firms to invest in."

A win-win for both concerned, China and the ASEAN countries.

Long may they both prosper. IMHO.

China can not afford to cut off trade from Taiwan, as it would cripple the Chinese economy. Most of the imports from Taiwan are microprocessors that China desperately needs to keep its manufacturing sector afloat.

You Three Stooges lemmings are so consumed by propaganda that you really have no idea what is the actual reality. China needs Taiwan. Not the other way around.

China is spending on military around what the US spent on military in the early 2000's. In the uni polar era. Are you even aware of that ?

China already surrounded the whole island in its drills. There will be a landing just like there was a landing in Crimea. And the generals in the area will have to decide if they want to fight or not.

Just to remind you, senile Joe was already walked back from his ridiculous comment by his minders immediately after coming out with that laughable tripe.
This thread is already redundant. I suppose it has morphed to storm in a teacup Nancy and her meaningless unofficial visit. I mean really- is the USA honestly so pathetic these days?

    What is your point, dipshit?

China has no experience in combined arms operations, no experience waging war on a large scale, no experience coordinating logistics on a global scale, on and on and on. The last war the Chinese fought was in 1979, and they got their shit packed in by the Vietnamese and were forced to retreat back into their own country.

As usual, you have not a fucking clue what you are talking about.

More Australians fear China will attack Australia than Taiwanese believe China will attack Taiwan, the results of a think tank survey published today has revealed.

The results, described as "astounding", are partly due to the "drums of war" rhetoric repeated by some political figures, analysts say.

The Australia Institute polled two groups of 1000 people, one each in Australia and Taiwan, during this month's tensions in the Taiwan Strait after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the self-governing island.

Almost one in 10 Australians believed an invasion will come "soon", compared with one in 20 Taiwanese.

    5%

    Meanwhile,........

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) arrived in Taiwan on Sunday, leading the latest U.S. delegation to the self-governing island amid heightened tensions with China following Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) visit earlier this month.

Holcomb’s office said the delegation, which includes state and Purdue University officials, would meet with Taiwanese officials during a two-day trip to strengthen economic and academic ties. The group will then travel to Seoul, South Korea for two days.

“I couldn’t be more energized to spend this week building new relationships, reinforcing long time ones and strengthening key sector partnerships with Taiwan and South Korea,” Holcomb said in a statement.

    And it continues...........
