Pussy Riot activist Rita Flores has stopped answering phone calls after her apartment was searched and she herself was detained by the Moscow police.


Her follow Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina told Meduza that, earlier on February 17, Flores told her lawyer Daniil Berman about the apartment search, and that she herself was in custody at the local detectives’ office. Flores did not explain the reasons for the search and detention, but told Berman that her phone was being taken away.


Berman went to the address Flores gave him, but the detectives turned him away, saying they didn’t have any detainees. The phone number from which Flores called Berman has now blocked incoming calls from the attorney. His client’s current location is unknown.


Rita Flores has been arrested in the past. In the summer 2021 she spent 30 days in custody, after being charged with posting Nazi symbols on Instagram. In March 2022, she said she had been detained in Minsk, and forced to record a video in praise of the Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko.

Missing Kremlin Critic Located in Prison Known for Torture

Jailed Kremlin critic Andrei Pivovarov has been transferred to a notorious penal colony where inmates have accused prison officials of torture, independent media reported Monday after his associates raised concerns over his unknown whereabouts.


Pivovarov’s associate Tatiana Usmanova told the Novaya Gazeta Europe news site that he has been inside Penal Colony No. 7 in the republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia for nearly a month.


Prison wardens there placed Pivovarov inside a cell-type facility until April 30 immediately after he arrived there on Jan. 24, the outlet said.


“First they hid Andrei from everyone for 30 days and without telling his relatives where he is,” Usmanova told Novaya Gazeta. “Then they sent him to this facility where calls and visitations are banned.”

Pivovarov, 41, was sentenced to four years in prison in July 2022 on charges of “undesirable” activities.


He denies the charges against him.


A court in southern Russia upheld the verdict in November 2022.


Russian security services detained Pivovarov in May 2021 after removing him from a flight bound for Warsaw amid a nationwide crackdown on opposition activists.


Pivovarov headed exiled Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkosky’s Open Russia organization.


Authorities labeled Open Russia “undesirable” in 2017, a designation that subjects anyone working with it to criminal prosecution.


The pro-democracy movement’s members continued to operate as a separate legal entity until May 2021, when it disbanded to protect its staff from prosecution.


Penal Colony No. 7 gained notoriety after a number of its high-profile inmates accused its chief warden of abuse, slave labor, extortion and creating a system of violence.


The chief warden was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in 2019 on abuse-of-power charges.

A regional court in the Tula region is seeking to restrict the parental rights of Alexey Moskalev, whose daughter, Masha, drew an anti-war picture during school art class. Telegram channels supporting the Moskalevs report that a hearing related to the case has been scheduled for March 15.


In January, the city of Efremov’s Commission on Juvenile Affairs filed a suit against the Moskalev family for being “in a socially dangerous situation” since May 2022. The head of the commission, Svetlana Davydova, says the family was flagged because the father did not attempt to return his daughter to school after the anti-war picture incident, and the mother lives on her own and shows no interest in her daughter’s life.


A Telegram channel supporting the Moskalevs notes that Masha has been in a social rehabilitation shelter since March 1. Employees there refuse to let her return home.


“We can’t find out anything about Masha since March 1. The management of the shelter and its director won’t give us any information about her. They ignore all requests and tell us to stop writing about Masha Moskaleva. They never gave her the phone we brought for her to communicate with her dad,” reads a post on the channel.


Human rights activists have asked everyone interested in the case to come to the March 15 hearing, and to “flood [the shelter] with complaints,” since Masha Moskaleva is being held there “against her will and without a court decision.”

A Russian man I know recently left his second home in Chiang Mai for America. It was surprising to me because he was always a big Putin fan. He doesn’t want to go back to Russia and be sent off to war. He found it too difficult to make a living in Thailand, so off to the USA.

Russian politician Vladimir Kara-Murza sentenced to 25 years behind bars

The Moscow City Court has sentenced Russian politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in prison.


The state prosecution asked the court at the hearing on 6 April to give him 25 years in total. In his closing speech, Kara-Murza stressed that he was placed in custody for his “political views”.


“For speaking out against the war in Ukraine. For a years-long fight against Putin’s dictatorship. For contributing to personal international sanctions against violators of human rights through the Magnitsky Act. Not only do I not repent any of these deeds, but I am also proud of them,” he said.


The trial was held behind closed doors.

Kara-Murza has been in custody since April 2022. He was facing three criminal charges: high treason, “fakes” about the Russian army, and running an “undesirable organisation” for working with Open Russia.

On 16 March, the politician’s lawyer said that Kara-Murza could not have been transferred from the detention facility to the court hearing over significant health complications. The motion to submit medical documents that specified that Kara-Murza had polyneuropathy (one of the conditions that rule out being placed in a detention centre) was denied.


On 22 February, the lawyer noted that the politician had been placed in a disciplinary cell for four days. According to him, the detention facility administration cited a violation of internal regulations as the reason.

Alexey Moskalev, who is accused of “discrediting” the Russian army and who was arrested in Belarus after fleeing house arrest, has been extradited to Russia and remanded to pre-trial detention in Smolensk. Vladimir Bilienko, a lawyer with the human rights organization OVD Info, reported Moskalev’s whereabouts after meeting with him.


Moskalev’s lawyer was unable to find out anything about his client’s whereabouts for several weeks. Bilienko said that the Federal Penitentiary Services of Russia and Belarus did not respond to requests for information about Moskalev’s location and didn’t allow Belarusian human rights activists to see Moskalev.


Moskalev reported to Bilienko that he was severely beaten and kicked on his chest and back during his detention in Belarus. He adds that the beatings tore a muscle in his right leg, and that he was struck several times in the head and had his head beaten against a wall.


Through his lawyer, Moskalev addressed activists, groups who support him, and “everyone who cares” about what has happened to him and his daughter. “Russia stands only on people like you,” he wrote.


Alexey Moskalev is the father of Masha Moskaleva, who ran into trouble with the Russian authorities after drawing an anti-war picture in sixth-grade art class. Moskalev was later charged with “discrediting” the army based on posts he had made on Russian social media networks. Private conversations in restaurants and rail cars are fair game for eavesdroppers, who call police to arrest “traitors” and “enemies.” Social media posts, and messages — even in private chat groups — become incriminating evidence that can lead to a knock on the door by FSB agents.


The effect is chilling, with denunciations strongly encouraged by the state and news of arrests and prosecutions amplified by propagandist commentators on federal television stations and Telegram channels.
