    Moldova Next?

Moldova Closes Airspace, Will Declare State Of Emergency As Influx Of Ukrainians Expected

You may ignore my take but do check the linky

I doubt a free Ukraine will exist soon. Many of the most able will get up and go , the bravest will perish the old infirm will be in a new Gulag.

But armed insurgents may be encouraged to bleed Russian casualties as happened in Afghan and Vietnam

Russia won't want or allow NATO to occupy neutral Moldova.
Unless they can join NATO in immediate future they will be toast too.

Putin can hardly lose any more credit in face of NATO inaction.
This will send a very dangerous message to Baltics , Finland Sweden may soon seek closer ties if not membership of NATO and the NATO Baltics encourage larger boots on the ground and SAMs stingers etc

By Easter there will be a sham election and the glorious rebranded Dr Villy aka St Putininsky a Ukrainian Quisling will offer free snags from his balcony to teh coprses below.

The southern half of W frontier between Slavic and Latins (Romanians and Moldovans) following basically the Danube Dniester distributaries into the beautiful bird sanctuaries of the Danube estauaries around Ren and Ismael.
An area I explored by punt/canoe when based on the Alfod and well worth a visit once peaceful, a rich marshland environment with fascinating history.

I was involved in a minor way in training teh Romanian border folks when entered EU , suffice to say they are similar in demeanor to average Thai cop or 7-11 ding dong operator in those days.

Independent in reality is the East bank of teh Dniester aka Transdniestria a rogue state online scams , smuggling has always and Russian occupation since 1945

Also an excellent SBS Oz documentary

Thanks d44. I just learned about Moldova & Transnistria ~2 years ago while binging on the travel vids of YouTubers Jason Billam (from UK) & Gabriel Traveler (from USA).

I think most of the small former Soviet countries bordering Russia are on tenterhooks now. Re: Ukraine, Kiev is most likely to fall in the next few hours or days. Sad times for everyone, and high inflation rates plus petrol prices!

Moldovan President Maia Sandu says that many Moldovans want to unite with Romania and by so doing integrate with the European Union and NATO. But she warns that many are against and says that such a union could occur only if there is “overwhelming” support among Moldovans for it.
Her remarks – available at vz.ru/news/2021/12/28/1136389.html – have already triggered concerns in Moscow and discussions there about the ways in which the Russian government can act in order to prevent support in Moldova for union with Romania from growing (vz.ru/politics/2021/12/28/1105215.html).

Moldova is a small inconsequential country bordered by Ukraine and Romania. It is a lawless province ruled by drugs and gangs with self interest at heart. Purportedly under Russian control, the place is ungovernable and lacks any kind of stability, because some parts seek Romanian approval and access to Europe, but there are many sympathetic to Russia and the so called peace keeping force. The place is a joke.

For the majority, rightly unfamiliar with this non holiday destiantion area

Moldova is a tiny democratic Romanian speaking remnant of WW2 the sole Latin people to ruled from Moscow

After 1991 an even smaller small strip, barely teh size of LA TransDniestra on east bank became a de facto rogue state supported by Lebedev and has had Russian forces, while landlocked liked by a river port to the to Black Sea and handy base for the inevitable siege capture of Odessa where pre Euro-Maidan many Russian sailors and citizens , while the Crimea was USSR's Isle of White with its Inkerman pubs and old Wrinklies , Odessa was the sparkling International City of the S coast for rich retirees if not rainbow Brighton, perhaps the Bournemouth of the USSR with no doubt it's own Duncan Donut "Ant" repellent.

The gem of these resorts was Adler near Sochi , but all screwed by Russia now.

As brother Switch aka Duke of Nob avers it has been a haven for smuggling , porn, net scams as it is effectively "untouchable" by International courts or pubic opinions

    It was an honest question.

I didn't know that many in Moldova proper was Russia leaning, that the "peacekeepers" were anywhere but Trannistria and that Moldova proper was "lawless" too.

    But do educate me,Herman

This time you can, cause I'm blank here

( i'll check your lesson for the usual agitprop coming from you, though)

It’s actually a good example of how bad Russia could become, if Putin’s War gets his way. Moldovan corruption levels are light years ahead of Russia in everything except geographical stature.

To be fair to teh people of Moldova their new woman leader wishes to join EU and certain NATO.

Like their brother in adjacent Romania desperately poor under communism, formerly Germans , Jews, Ukrainian: Червона Русь, romanized: Chervona Rus; Polish: Ruś Czerwona); Carpathian Ruthenia and many others, Wallachia,Hutterites, Slovaks, Moravska, Sorbs polesian Poles, Podolians, Czechs, Serbs, Austiran , Maygars, Russians Bessarbia had a great culture before the holocaust

Romania proper has had bucket loads of EU aid , infrastructure and its workers free to graft all over EU and UK until recently and remot sums to the poorest Carpathian villages that I saw 2 decades ago where old peasants lived pretty much like Lanna but with freezing winters.

Poverty is similar globally , living with chickens , dirty smokey overcrowded hovels often kids on floor , toilet a dunny in the yard full of pig shit and chickens but enough of all our ancestral homes centuries back.

Real problem has been Transniestra the small Eastern strip between the river and Ukraine border

    Moldova Corruption Index - 2021 Data - 2022 Forecast - 1999-2020 Historical - Chart

    Crime in Transnistria - Wikipedia.

Assuming Ukraine win , Moldova may reunite with their fellow Romanians, turf out the Russian and try to imprison /sanction the gangs.

For those wo love waterfowl and Marshlands it is a beautiful landscape away from the Soviet spoil and ugly concrete towns, They have wine , spirits song and love of getting pissed quite like the Celts

Could become? We have Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova that Putin is fucking with. It's already bad enough to end his dictatorship.

I work with a Moldovian. According to her, the Russians are c unts. They hold the country to ransom all the time...like now, where they have just increased the price of gas by 300% and they also make it very difficult to export their wine. She has been living in NZ for 20 years. There is no love lost with her or her family towards Putin.

I suppose with the Ukrainian situation chancers and opportunists will come out of the woodwork, but Moldova is the poorest country in Europe- (Ukraine being second pre-invasion). It is nowhere near ready to join the EU.

Moldova pledges support for refugees, as it pushes for EU membership

Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita said her country is “firmly committed” to European integration and stressed her desire for the nation to obtain European Union membership.

Gavrilita made the remarks in a news conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. Secretary Blinken is traveling in the country to meet with government officials during the refugee crisis stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to Gavrilita, more than 230,000 people have crossed over the Moldovan border from Ukraine, with 120,000 staying in the country.

“For a small country like Moldova proportionately this is a very large number. And managing such an influx because only been possible because of the extraordinary solidarity shown by every person, every company, every nongovernmental organization. Everybody has come together to host to provide shelter to provide food to provide assistance to those who are fleeing war,” she said.

Gavrilita also added that the country was continuing its pursuit of EU membership, saying: "we have submitted our application on the third of March"

"And as we embark on this journey, we know that we can count on the friendship on the strong support with the United States.”
