Thread: Heroes fight like Greeks

The iconic British statesman Winston Churchill, who led the United Kingdom during World War II, famously praised the Greek people in a BBC speech during the first days of the Greco-Italian War, stating “Until now we used to say that the Greeks fight like heroes. Now we shall say: Heroes fight like Greeks.”

In Greece October 28 they commemorate October 28 as OHI (NO) day when the axis powers demanded their surrender.To which they replied with only one word ,OHI.

They say that a picture tells a thousand words. The graphic below does a bit of that.

They repelled the Italians and chased them into the mountains of Albania, fording the Germans to withdraw resources from other fronts to come to the rescue. Some say precipitating the fall of Mussolini, and changing the dynamics of the war.
To the defence of the Italians, their heart was really not into it,and were totally unprepared by the ferocity they encountered.
Greeks have never held bad feelings toward Italians for the unfortunate for both sides incident.
And to their credit, Italians did string Mussolini from a high tree afterwords.

Italy invaded Ethiopia again in 1935 and occupied the country for 5 years, creating a safety valve for landless Italians to start farming in the new colony. The roads the Italians built form the main highway network in Ethiopia today.

Had they not worn easily spotted white skirts and those lovely pompoms like Pierrots in some seaside Fol-de-Rol might have fought for 40 years like the Vietnamese or 800 years the Celts.

The Brits had a similar problem in the Americas during the revolutionary war where they were easily spotted hiding behind logs waiting to ambush George Washington.
Had they been smarter and pasted a couple of eyes and a snout on those spiffy hats, they would had easily been mistaken for mangy racoons and instead of English we would now speak , well whatever that Gobbledygook you guys speak over there is.
PS: is it me or does everyone think that covering the eyes of guards is not the best idea?

But my all time favorite winners are the vatican guards who should have known it was a mistake to accept the lowest bid for the design of their uniform from a guy named Bozo the clown.
