France has never been a full NATO member, other than being attached to the EU mainland. They have frequently flouted arms sales to less than honorable countries, whenever it served their purpose, and it supported their defence industry.
France has 4 Nuclear powered submarines equipped with nuclear weapons, as part of the overall nuclear capability, with only one sub permanently deployed. The remaining nuclear weapons are with the French Air Force.

The US/UK deal will help supply and build nuclear powered, but not nuclear armed for Australia. It is a measure of how far behind their procurement system was, when you consider that the last UK diesel electric subs were retired in the 1980s.
Nuclear powered vessels have greater longevity of operations and better, quieter stealth operations, so it’s no surprise that the Australians were smart enough to cancel the diesel electric order they originally placed with France. (Not with the EU.)
Given the greater threat currently faced by Australia in the Pacific, it makes sense to have a more modern underwater capability.
The combined experience of the US/UK nuclear powered fleets has maintained a NATO capability for decades, with both the US and the UK having autonomy for these assets to be deployed, individually, or collectively, under the NATO. umbrella.
France has dithered and costs have risen for the proposed diesel electric deal. Some of this could be down to French issues or possibly Australian demands for change.
The Australians want modern capable submarines. France can no longer provide this service because the technology has moved on.
The French expertise in nuclear powered vessels is limited to 10 submarines, of which only 4 are equipped with nuclear weapons, and usually only one of those at sea on a rotation basis. They also have their navy flagship, the CdG nuclear powered aircraft carrier, which has the advantage of cat and trap launch systems for use by US Navy aircraft.
However, the CdG build was compromised from the start by the non availability of a shipyard
to build such a concept. It is now overdue replacement, but the French can’t afford it.

Australia made the correct choice for the Australian Navy. Their submarines will be modern and capable, and mostly assembled by home based ship yards. They will enjoy the superior and long held expertise of the US/UK NATO collaboration. The French don’t like that word. Hahaha

Its funny. VDL is spouting off about one of the EU member states being treated unfairly. I was not aware that the EU was party to the French/Oz deal, i thought they contracted as a sovereign nation. Just goes to show how out of touch the EU is.

    Indirectly

Guess you haven't heard about some initiative regarding the Pacific, that the EU incl France was working on

Would it have been so difficult to include France in that Pacific Club ?

    They do have interests there

    Yes it would.

Yanks want that deal for themselves.

    They need it

I get the impression that the EU wants to be a major power and be taken serioulsy on the world stage as one. Economically, fair enough; politically, ok; but militarily they are a long way off that despite all their combined military resources.

    Ofcourse "they" do.

It's just that the EU consists of of memberstates with their own opinions. The Good Lord be praises for that (hi Cyrille )

The world doesn't need one more super power measuring dicks with China

One thing the EU doesn't want is to be a 'major military power' - not the aim and not necessary

This is what the aBrits have always bemoaned that they somehow didn't have . . . which of course they did, but were too dense to question their politicians whine about it

Scotland supplies the vast majority of your oil - you're fucked when they decide to go it alone.

Why you constantly make these threads into some national chest-thumping competition is quite childish

Russia and U.K. have a lot in common....economically of course.

U.K. needs to sell more subs and stay fresh.

Now just imagine Germany had all that gas and oil. You guys would be starting another war

Because it only produces a million barrels a day, it's not brilliant quality and the costs of producing it are high.

P.S. Dubai is IN the Emirates. And Abu Dhabi has most of the Emirates' Oil.
