    Geopolitical Rumblings Leave U.S. Behind

    March 20, 2023

"Over the last month we have seen astonishing geopolitical developments.

In February China publicly lambasted U.S. hegemony, launched a global security initiative and offered a peace plan for Ukraine.

On March 10 China mediated an agreement which restored relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

On March 15 Moscow rolled out the red carpet for the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Yesterday al-Assad and his wife Asma arrived in the UAE for talks with Sheikh Mohammed

Also yesterday Iran and Iraq signed a security cooperation agreement that will stop the CIA sponsored Kurdish activities against Iran.

Also yesterday King Salman of Saudi Arabia invited the President of Iran to a visit in Riyadh.

For the last 30 years the U.S. considered the Middle East as its backyard. Twenty years ago it illegally invaded Iraq and caused 100,000nds of death and decades of chaos. Now China, by peaceful means, changed the balance in the Middle East within just one month.

Today China's President Xi arrived in Moscow for three days of talks with Russia's President Putin. An article by President Putin was published in the People's Daily while Russian media published a signed article by President Xi.

The U.S. is afraid that China's peace initiative for Ukraine will gain ground. It has openly come out against a cease-fire and peace talks. I had thought that was for Ukraine to decide?

It is likely that Putin will publicly endorse the Chinese peace plan while the U.S. is paranoid that peace might indeed happen. It may even want to sabotage the Saudi Iranian deal.

China's people are by the way the most happy in the world.

Xi and Putin are now running the multilateral global show. Biden and the hapless 'unilateral' people around him are left aside."

China's diplomacy to make 'more global contributions'; Vision on community with shared future implemented with real actions and notable results

By Yang Sheng and Wan Hengyi

    Published: Mar 23, 2023 11:54 PM

"China's diplomacy has pressed the "accelerate button" and sounded the clarion call in the spring of 2023 with a series of major diplomatic activities that bring positive changes to a world in turbulence. Experts said that China has formally started its new journey after the two sessions and will take on the responsibility of a major country by making more contributions to addressing concerns of the international community.

Chinese President Xi Jinping just concluded his successful and significant state visit to Russia on Wednesday, bringing new hopes for a ceasefire in the Ukraine crisis. Earlier this month, senior officials from Saudi Arabia and Iran shook hands in Beijing as the two countries agreed to resume diplomatic ties following China's mediation.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, China's special envoys for Middle East and Afghanistan issues have also started their new missions by travelling around the globe to mediate and solve international problems such as the Palestine-Israel conflict and issues between Afghanistan and its neighboring countries in Central Asia.

A decade ago, in March 2013, Xi first put forward the concept of "a community with a shared future for mankind" when speaking at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. A decade later, the Chinese flagship vision is becoming a great banner for building a better, more prosperous world, said a commentary article published by the Xinhua News Agency.

In the past decade, China has made efforts to promote this concept and work together with other countries around the globe to seek solutions for problems and share the benefits of development. From the Belt and Road Initiative that has brought huge development opportunities to countries all around the world, to the joint fight against the COVID-19 pandemic that saved numerous lives from the deadly virus; from conducting disaster relief and rescue operations in earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria earlier this year, to making significant contributions to UN peace keeping missions worldwide, China has always implemented its concept with concrete actions and notable achievements, said experts.

    Global influence

These achievements and proactive activities have prompted some Western media to take note of the change in China's diplomacy. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published an article on Wednesday that said "China now sees itself as a global power—and it is starting to act like one."

Domestically, China has already set its vision clearly after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, formally establishing a new team of leaders and new structure for Party and state institutions after the two sessions, which means China is fully prepared to march full speed ahead in its new journey of the new era, said experts.

Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations at the China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Thursday that "the current international situation has also made China more proactive."

The world is now in a state of great turbulence, and this affects the entire international community, and unfortunately, the US, the world's only super power, chooses not to take the responsibility to fix the world, but instead uses the cracks and scars around the globe to instigate more conflicts, Li said. It's even trying to reap benefits from the chaos, which means China, a major power with strength and wisdom, has to stand up and take the responsibility of promoting peace through its actions, he added.

In the coming weeks, leaders and top diplomats from many countries and international organizations are scheduled or have announced plans to visit China, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Honduras, a country that used to be an ally of the island of Taiwan, reportedly plans to send its foreign minister to visit the Chinese mainland to promote the establishment of diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday said that China welcomes the positive attitude of Honduras and is willing to develop ties with the country.

Equatorial Guinea's foreign minister Simeón Oyono Esono Angue and New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta are also visiting China this week. ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn will pay an official visit to China from March 24 to 29, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

This shows that the US approaches of containment, isolation and stigmatization against China have completely failed. All countries, whether they are large nations like France and Brazil or small nations like Honduras and Equatorial Guinea, all need to develop ties with China, and China also wants to build stable and equal relations with them, experts said.

In particular, on matters that the world shares concerns over, like the ongoing Ukraine crisis, more and more countries find that the US and its followers have failed to bring peace and also failed to lead global recovery, Li said. They are even opposing de-escalation of the crisis and are eager to see the bloodshed being prolonged, which is why countries are now placing their expectations on China, he added.

    'US-centric' no more

The WSJ article said "China's willingness to wade into these conflicts in such a strident way marks a new phase in the country's vision for itself and its role in the world. It sends a message that China and its friends are no longer obliged to conform to a US-led global order."

Chinese analysts said that in fact, it was the US-led order that brought more troubles, unfairness, uncertainty and even danger to world peace and global recovery, so more and more members of the international community, including China, believe that it's time to make some changes to jointly and more actively build a "community with a shared future for mankind."

It's not just Russia, Ukraine and European countries suffering as a result of the problematic security mechanism the US has shaped for the continent. In the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Asian-Pacific region, many countries are also suffering from tensions, conflicts and unrest directly or indirectly caused by the US, said experts.

After the outbreak of the Ukraine crisis, the US-led Western countries launched a series of unilateral sanctions, and in recent years, Washington has launched all-out containment to target China's development. These have seriously disrupted the supply and industrial chains, and the chain of capital is also being impacted, with many Western banks now paying the price, analysts said.

Zhang Weiwei, dean of the China Institute at Fudan University, told the Global Times that although Russia has been isolated by the West, "the West is isolated" by the rest of the world. Irresponsible acts carried out by the US have backfired on its own hegemony.

Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at the Renmin University of China, echoed this view, saying that "after seeing the reckless behaviors of the US and its Western followers, many countries are being very disappointed by the West that they used to admire."

In 2008, China helped the US after its financial tsunami, but Washington didn't return the favor to China and only offered more hostilities, so this time, if another financial crisis comes, the US should not ask for help from China, Zhang noted.

Washington unilaterally released information about US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo planning to visit China, but without confirmation from the Chinese side.

While answering a question about the US seeking to have a call between the presidents of the two countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, "Communication should not be carried out for the sake of communication. The US side should show sincerity."

Li said that in the past, China found that as long as it stabilizes ties with the US, ties with other nations will not see big problems, but since the Trump administration, China has found that the US is the biggest troublemaker and shows no sincerity in fixing ties, no matter how China expresses its kindness, so now, it's time for China to be more proactive and invest more resources in developing ties with other countries rather than prioritize ties with Washington."

China's first population drop in six decades sounds alarm on demographic crisis

    By Albee Zhang

    and Farah Master

BEIJING/HONG KONG, Jan 17 (Reuters) - China's population fell last year for the first time in six decades, a historic turn that is expected to mark the start of a long period of decline in its citizen numbers with profound implications for its economy and the world.
The country's National Bureau of Statistics reported a drop of roughly 850,000 people for a population of 1.41175 billion in 2022, marking the first decline since 1961, the last year of China's Great Famine.

That possibly makes India the world's most populous nation. U.N. experts predicted last year India would have a population of 1.412 billion in 2022 though they did not expect the South Asian nation to overtake China until this year.

India, however, only collects population figures every 10 years and its latest census, originally scheduled for 2021, has been delayed due to the pandemic.

Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsLong-term, U.N. experts see China's population shrinking by 109 million by 2050, more than triple the decline of their previous forecast in 2019.

That's caused domestic demographers to lament that China will get old before it gets rich, slowing the economy as revenues drop and government debt increases due to soaring health and welfare costs.
"China's demographic and economic outlook is much bleaker than expected. China will have to adjust its social, economic, defense and foreign policies," said demographer Yi Fuxian.
He added that the country's shrinking labour force and downturn in manufacturing heft would further exacerbate high prices and high inflation in the United States and Europe.
"Economic growth will have to depend more on productivity growth," added Zhiwei Zhang, chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management.
Kang Yi, head of the national statistics bureau, dismissed concerns about the population decline, telling reporters that "overall labour supply still exceeds demand".

China's birth rate last year was just 6.77 births per 1,000 people, down from a rate of 7.52 births in 2021 and marking the lowest birth rate on record.

    Reuters Graphics Reuters Graphics

The number of Chinese women of childbearing age, which the government defines as aged 25 to 35, fell by about 4 million, Kang said.
The death rate, the highest since 1974 during the Cultural Revolution, was 7.37 deaths per 1,000 people, which compares with a rate of 7.18 deaths in 2021.
    ONE-CHILD POLICY IMPACT

Much of the demographic downturn is the result of China's one-child policy imposed between 1980 and 2015 as well as sky-high education costs that have put many Chinese off having more than one child or even having any at all.
The one-child policy and a traditional preference for boys have also created a deep gender imbalance. The latest data shows China with around 722 million males compared to 690 million females. The imbalance, which is more pronounced in rural areas, has led to fewer families being formed in recent years.
The data was the top trending topic on Chinese social media after the figures were released on Tuesday. One hashtag,"#Is it really important to have offspring?" had hundreds of millions of hits.
"The fundamental reason why women do not want to have children lies not in themselves, but in the failure of society and men to take up the responsibility of raising children. For women who give birth this leads to a serious decline in their quality of life and spiritual life," posted one netizen with the username Joyful Ned.
Chinese netizens have also previously complained about pressure on newlyweds to have offspring as soon as possible, reporting regular calls from their local government asking when they can expect a pregnancy.
China's stringent zero-COVID policies that were in place for three years have caused further damage to the country's demographic outlook, population experts have said.
Local governments have since 2021 rolled out measures to encourage people to have more babies, including tax deductions, longer maternity leave and housing subsidies. President Xi Jinping also said in October the government would enact further supportive policies.
The measures so far, however, have done little to arrest the long-term trend.
Online searches for baby strollers on China's Baidu search engine dropped 17% in 2022 and are down 41% since 2018, while searches for baby bottles are down more than a third since 2018. In contrast, searches for elderly care homes surged eight-fold last year.
The reverse is playing out in India, where Google Trends shows a 15% year-on-year increase in searches for baby bottles in 2022, while searches for cribs rose almost five-fold.

Honduras not to be the last to 'sever diplomatic ties' with Taiwan island: Global Times editorial

    By Global Times

    Published: Mar 27, 2023 12:42 AM

"Honduras on Sunday signed a joint communiqué with Beijing on the establishment of diplomatic relations shortly after it announced to sever so-called "diplomatic" relations with the Taiwan island. This is the ninth so-called ally that Taiwan authorities have lost at a rapid pace since the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Tsing Ing-wen authorities came to power in 2016. This once again demonstrates that the international community's recognition and consensus on the one-China principle have been increasingly deepened and consolidated, which is the common aspiration of the people and the trend of the times.

Latin America used to be one of the regions where the Taiwan authorities' "diplomatic allies" were concentrated. In recent years, Taiwan's "diplomatic allies" in this region have one after another chosen to establish diplomatic relations with the mainland, forming a strong transmission effect. As an important regional country, Honduras' choice to "sever diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan authorities and establish diplomatic relations with the Chinese mainland is significant both regionally and internationally. This means that after Nicaragua broke off diplomatic ties with the island of Taiwan in December 2021, Taiwan has lost another ally, and it has been left with only 13 "diplomatic allies" across the world.

No matter how anxious the DPP authorities are, and no matter how many times Washington sends officials to coerce and lure, it always ends up with Taiwan's "diplomats" packing up and leaving, often in a very embarrassing manner. This is not only a shame for the DPP authorities, but also a manifestation of the increasing loss of support and popularity of Taiwan secessionist forces in the international community. It's also an ironclad proof that "Taiwan independence" is a dead end and cannot have a way out. It can be expected that in the face of the trend of history, if the Taiwan secessionist forces do not stop, the island will face a bigger wave of severing "diplomatic ties."

Most countries generally hope to have good relations with China, which is a natural result of China's development benefiting the world. In recent years, China has successively established or resumed diplomatic relations with countries such as Panama, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Nicaragua in Latin America, actively promoting bilateral practical cooperation, and bringing tangible benefits to the peoples of relevant countries. As the Honduran foreign minister said, "The world has been moving in this direction... Honduras' foreign policy should seek to benefit the people. We believe that this step will benefit the country." Honduras' neighboring country El Salvador established diplomatic relations with China five years ago. Since then, El Salvador has seen significant improvements in terms of combating the COVID-19 pandemic and social and economic development. The Salvadoran ambassador to China spoke highly of China's cultural characteristics, political philosophy and values.

The DPP authorities are furious about Honduras' decision. This is not surprising. On Sunday, they accused Honduras of asking for money from the Taiwan island and falsely claimed that the mainland had been "luring" Honduras. This can only be understood as a move of venting their anger through "throwing mud at others." Because Taiwan has always been engaging in "dollar diplomacy," it thinks the mainland is doing the same. The DPP authorities have tried to distract the world's attention while deflecting some internal pressure with such a narrative, but this only exposes its own sordidness. Unlike the Taiwan authorities, we place Latin America in an important position in the construction of the "Belt and Road Initiative," and promote the various countries' own development through equal and mutual beneficial cooperation. Latin American countries are well aware of this. The mainland's comprehensive influence cannot be changed by any means or slanders of the Taiwan authorities.

According to reports, the US exerted diplomatic pressure on Honduras when the latter signaled its intention to establish diplomatic relations with China, with an attempt to "reverse" and "prevent" Honduras' decision. It needs to be noted that it's an independent act of a sovereign country to choose with whom it would establish diplomatic relations, and Washington and the Taiwan authorities have no right to intervene. Some countries choose to establish diplomatic relations with the Chinese mainland independently because they see the positive effects on their economic and social development that the decision will bring and believe it is also beneficial for enhancing their political status and image in the region and international politics. Whether Washington and the DPP authorities "throw mud at" or try to "morally abduct" others, they are merely attempting to "salvage their dignity" and cannot cover up their political decline.

Now, the DPP authorities are tightly latching onto the US, touted seeking courtship with several foreign legislators as "achievements" and showed off the petty trick of "transiting" through US as "diplomatic accomplishments." These soap bubbles that could easily burst cannot cover up the botched situation of the island's governance, nor will they boost the momentum of "Taiwan independence." Instead, they will only accelerate the historical wheel of reunification of the motherland. The sleepwalking of "Taiwan independence" is coming to an end."

Upbeat economic outlook issued for China
S&P Global Ratings forecasts 5.5% GDP growth this year

    "
China’s economy will grow this year, exceeding Beijing’s official projections and supporting wider Asia-Pacific expansion, S&P Global Ratings said in its outlook, which was issued on Sunday.

The agency forecasts a “largely organic recovery” in the world’s second-largest economy in 2023, led by consumption and services.

“Our growth forecast of 5.5% exceeds the country’s modest target of ‘around 5%.’ In our view, Beijing set that target at a relatively unambitious level to provide room for policy to respond to inflation or financial risks, if needed,” S&P stated.

The report indicated that after the sudden removal of Covid-19 restrictions, China quickly moved on from the pandemic, with mobility rising fast and confidence up. Better momentum in industrial production, investment, and especially in retail sales in the first two months confirmed the recovery, the ratings agency said.

Conditions in the housing sector have reportedly brightened, with sales improving and prices stabilizing in early 2023. The agency wrote that it does not expect a V-shaped recovery, but that a turnaround in such an important sector would help sustain growth and reduce downside risks.

Infrastructure investment growth should ease this year as policymakers aim to contain local public debt, the report said. “Weak export prospects and supply chain adjustments will weigh on corporate investment. Nonetheless, following the initial bounce-back, growth should become more broad-based. Investment and industrial activity will make a meaningful contribution,” S&P wrote.

At the same time, the report highlighted the “two-way risks” to China’s growth outlook for 2023 and 2024, warning that after the initial bounce-back, the recovery may lose steam due to potential setbacks such as housing or labor market weakness.

According to S&P, other Asia-Pacific economies should slow but not stumble on weaker global growth, the receding of the benefits from domestic re-opening, and the impact of higher interest rates.

“We maintain our cautiously optimistic outlook for Asia-Pacific. China’s economy is on track to recover this year. For other economies this will dampen but not offset the hit of slower growth in the US and Europe, the fading impact of domestic re-opening post the pandemic, and higher interest rates,” the agency wrote.

S&P expects the region, excluding China, to grow at 3.8% in 2023, after 4.7% growth in 2022. “In most economies, inflation should decline, although elevated core inflation will prod some central banks to raise rates further. External pressure from rising US interest rates will likely push some others to lift rates further too.”"

Brazil and China have signed a trade agreement to abandon the US dollar

    2:26 30.03.2023 06:47

    Economy

"China and Brazil have signed an agreement that they will abandon the use of the US dollar in trade transactions and will use their national currencies. This will allow them to conduct trade and financial transactions directly, exchanging yuan for reais and vice versa, without having to convert their currencies to US dollars. The deal was announced on Wednesday and, according to the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), it will reduce costs and promote the expansion of bilateral trade and facilitate investment.

China is Brazil's largest trading partner, accounting for more than a fifth of all imports to Brazil, followed by the United States.

In addition, China is Brazil's largest export market, accounting for more than a third of all exports. China overtook the United States as Brazil's top trading partner in 2009. Today, Brazil is the largest recipient of Chinese investment in Latin America, driven by spending on high-voltage power lines and oil production.

In January, officials from Brazil and China reached a preliminary agreement to switch to using their national currencies in trade instead of the US dollar. This was announced after a high-level business meeting between the two countries, which was held in Beijing. This agreement will allow both countries to conduct trade and financial transactions directly using their currencies, without having to convert them to US dollars.

After a period of strained relations between China and Brazil under previous President Jair Bolsonaro, who used anti-Chinese rhetoric in his election campaign and in the course of his duties, Brazil's new leftist president, Luiz da Silva, has taken steps to strengthen ties with Beijing. He was supposed to make his first state visit to China over the weekend, but was forced to cancel it due to contracting pneumonia. However, a delegation consisting of ministers, senators, legislators, business people and more than 100 representatives of the agricultural sector accompanied him during this visit."

So imagine how much damage the chinkies will do to the Amazon rainforest thanks to their predatory consumption and them breeding like rats.

China is literally inhaling soybeans from Brazilian soya farms in the country’s central and
western areas, especially in the state of Mato Grosso. These former rainforest regions are increasingly being converted into farmland, all to supply the growing Asian demand, particularly with China’s exploding urban population.

France started buying LNG for yuan
    Yesterday, 17: 00

"For the first time, a deal was made on the Shanghai Stock Exchange to sell liquefied natural gas for yuan. The Chinese state-owned national oil corporation CNOOC and the French company TotalEnergies, which acted as the buyer, took part in the sale of the LNG consignment. This was reported by the Business Times and Reuters agencies.

The exchange said in a statement that 65 tons of gas from the United Arab Emirates were sold.

CNOOC is the third largest gas corporation in China after CNPC and Sinopec, which once again illustrates the desire of Beijing and other countries to move away from the dominance of the dollar in the purchase and sale of energy resources. CNOOC was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Beijing. The corporation is engaged in oil and gas production in offshore China and in other countries, as well as the sale and processing of energy resources.

TotalEnergies operates in 130 countries of the world, producing oil and gas in Asia, Africa, Europe and overseas.

Meanwhile, Russia and the Chinese company CNPC sell gas for rubles and yuan in equal proportions. This was stated by Vladimir Putin during the Eastern Economic Forum in September last year. According to the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, such a payment mechanism is beneficial for both parties and a practical solution that will simplify further payments."

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning’s Regular Press Conference on March 30, 2023

"Reuters: The Honduran foreign ministry tweeted at its official account yesterday that President Xiomara Castro will visit China soon. Can you share more information on this?
Mao Ning: We welcome President Xiomara Castro to visit China at an early date to blueprint the future of bilateral relations with President Xi Jinping. China stands ready to step up high-level exchange with the Honduran side, enhance political mutual trust and mutual understanding, and advance exchange and cooperation in various fields in the spirit of equality and win-win cooperation.

Xinhua News Agency: Today we released a report entitled “US Human Rights Abuse Against Refugees and Immigrants: Truth and Facts”. This came after yesterday’s “The United States’ Arbitrary Detention at Home and Abroad: Truth and Facts”. What’s your comment?

Mao Ning: I have also seen this latest Xinhua report. It reveals the US’ poor track record and its lies and double standards regarding its past and present treatment of refugees and immigrants at home and abroad.

The US is known to be a nation of immigrants. None of the country’s political, economic, social, cultural and technological advances would have been possible without the enormous contribution of immigrants. However, throughout the country’s history, many immigrant communities were treated cruelly by the US government. Recent years have even witnessed humanitarian disasters on refugees and immigrants in the US. The US is the primary cause of the global refugee crisis as it interferes in the domestic affairs of other countries and launches wars across the world.

The US needs to seriously reflect on its terrible record on the issue of refugees and immigrants and correct its course, and make real efforts to improve the situations of refugees and immigrants. It should stop all hegemonic and bullying practices and avoid creating new refugee crises in the world.

AFP: A report released by a Norwegian NGO yesterday showed that the number of operational nuclear warheads globally increased last year. It also mentioned that China is among the countries with a bigger nuclear arsenal, which is expected to see a sharp increase over the next decade. What’s your comment?

Mao Ning: I haven’t seen the report you mentioned. As a principle, China follows a policy of “no first use” of nuclear weapons. We advocate for the complete prohibition and thorough destruction of nuclear weapons and actively engage in talks and communications over arms control. The US, with the most powerful nuclear arsenal in the world, should take the lead in fulfilling its nuclear disarmament obligations.

Reuters: US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Wednesday that the US is working hard to counter China’s influence in international institutions and in lending to developing countries, and that by lending to developing countries, China leaves them trapped in debt. What is your response?

Mao Ning: We reject the unjustified accusation from the US. China has always carried out investment and financing cooperation with developing countries based on international rules and the principle of openness and transparency. We never attach any political strings, or seek any selfish political interests. We have been helping developing countries relieve debt burdens, and made the biggest contribution to implementing the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative.

World Bank statistics show that multilateral financial institutions and commercial creditors, accounting for more than 80% of the sovereign debt of developing countries, are the biggest source of stress on developing countries in terms of debt payment. Since last year, the US has resorted to unprecedented massive interest rate hikes, making the debt problems of certain countries even worse. The US needs to take concrete steps to help developing countries, rather than point fingers at others.

Reuters: Saudi Arabia officially joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization yesterday. Do you have more on that?

Mao Ning: We congratulate Saudi Arabia on becoming a dialogue partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). China stands ready to strengthen cooperation with Saudi Arabia within the SCO to contribute more to safeguarding regional peace and stability and promoting common development.

AFP: The Brazilian government said on Wednesday that Brazil and China have reached a deal to trade in their own currencies, ditching the US dollar as an intermediary. Do you have more details on this?

Mao Ning: Earlier this year, China and Brazil signed a memorandum of cooperation to establish renminbi (RMB) clearing arrangements in Brazil. These arrangements will help enterprises and financial institutions in both countries conduct cross-border transactions using the RMB. They will also further facilitate bilateral trade and investment. Regarding the specifics you asked about, I will need to refer you to the competent authorities.

Dragon TV: It was reported that BRICS’ New Development Bank (NDB) announced on March 24 that NDB’s Board of Governors unanimously elected Mrs. Dilma Vana Rousseff, former President of Brazil, as the President of the Bank to a term of two years, effective immediately. Mrs. Rousseff arrived in Shanghai where the Bank is headquartered on March 27. Do you have any comment?

Mao Ning: The New Development Bank (NDB) is one of the signature outcomes of BRICS cooperation. Over the past seven plus years since its establishment, the NDB has approved over $34 billion in loans to 99 projects, providing strong support for infrastructure construction and sustainable development in emerging markets and developing countries. Aside from the founding members, Bangladesh, the UAE, Egypt and Uruguay have joined or will join the NDB family, which fully speaks to the vitality and global influence of BRICS.

Mrs. Dilma Vana Rousseff, a renowned stateswoman and economist devoted to global development over the years, enjoys high prestige and significant influence in the world. Her nomination by the Brazilian government as the President of the NDB underscores the importance the Brazilian government sees in the NDB and BRICS, which China appreciates. China, as the host country, welcomes the assumption of office by Mrs. Rousseff. We will continue to deepen all-round cooperation with the NDB and fully support her work. We believe that under her wise and professional leadership, and with the concerted efforts of all member states, the NDB will realize greater achievements and development, and make greater contribution to the development and prosperity of emerging economies and developing countries, including BRICS countries.

Reuters: Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen has met with the Taiwanese diaspora and delivered remarks while transiting through the US. What’s your comment?

Mao Ning: China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the US and the Taiwan region. We firmly oppose any visit by leader of the Taiwan region to the US in any name or under whatever pretext, and we firmly oppose the US government having any form of official contact with the Taiwan region. In disregard of China’s strong démarches and repeated warnings, the US insisted on arranging the so-called “transit” for Tsai Ing-wen to go to the US. China strongly protests and condemns that.

The US and the Taiwan authorities made arrangements for Tsai to engage in political activities in the US and framed it as a “transit” to upgrade official exchanges and substantive relations with the Taiwan region. This seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, gravely undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and sends a seriously wrong message to “Taiwan independence” separatists. This once again shows that the fundamental cause of the new round of tensions in the Taiwan Strait is the Taiwan authorities’ repeated attempt to solicit US support for “Taiwan independence” and the fact that some in the US intend to use Taiwan to contain China.

The Taiwan question is the very core of China’s core interests, the bedrock of the political foundation of China-US relations, and the first red line that must not be crossed in the relationship. We urge the US to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, act on its commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence” or “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan”, stop all forms of official interaction with Taiwan, stop upgrading its substantive exchanges with the region, and stop fudging and hollowing out the one-China principle. China will continue to closely follow the situation and resolutely safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity.

AFP: According to Japanese media, Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi will visit China this weekend. Can China confirm this?

Mao Ning: The two sides are in communication over the visit by Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi to China. We will keep you updated if there is more to share."

More ignorant posts from the mouth of 'arry.

One example from my first hand knowledge in Thailand.

Crop production, retention of environment, retention of Thailands wildlife and improvement of its citizens livelihood.

Thailand is known worldwide for its durian production.

Recently China has been increasing its purchases of durian from Thailand. This has had a few positive affects for Thai durian producers.

    1. Crop selling prices have increased, benefiting Thai producers and their local services economy.

    2. The quality of the durian harvested have improved, due to Chinese purchasers demand of the higher grade 1 durian.

    3. Transport times from harvest to consumer have reduced due to larger road transport trucks, improved roads/rail links. and streamlined border processes. (less overloaded pickups accidents on Thai roads).

    4. Many Thai farmers have upped their production knowledge/abilities regarding latest orchard development, irrigation and fertilizer usage and pest husbandry.

All resulting in improved lives of small and large farmers incomes, long term usage of valuable land (durian trees are long lasting with multiple/decades of years of harvesting ), and the reduction in cut and burn for a one off payday.

Well done the Thai and Chinese governments for improving one group of producers and consumers.
