Some China bashing from India? We don't yet have the data to fairly evaluate China's success or lack of success in dealing with Covid. The Indians didn't do too well. I also think there's still many years left in the world's struggle against Covid. Covid tragically diverts health system resources from other areas of health care.

I saw the sudden flip in China's Covid policies with what seemed to be little preparation for the flip as a sign of shxt awful governance.

No doubt. Simular to the flu. New variants, new vaccines for many many years.

Or.....in the truest perspective, The West was already something without China [and other Eastern entities] . . . and imagine how much better it would be had they not started manufacturing in China, thereby also increasing China's wealth.
A simple fact that a few seem to have trouble grasping.

Are you saying it is Factual that China's financial capital (Shanghai) has collapsed, as this "Wion" says?

We can only trust that the next round of experiments are real legitimate vaccines.

Except that's not what was said
Oh really? Just look at the Header- right before your eyes-

"Gravitas: Chinas financial capital collapses." Then the talking head opens with "Chinas financial capital is collapsing. 70% of.... drone, drone, zzzzz"

Why waste time on that nonsense. The Economist says that, according to it's modelling, some 1.5mm Chinese will die of Covid in coming months.

The land where peaceful protests are considered "picking quarrels and provoking trouble".

When one by one, the friends of a young woman living in Beijing began disappearing — detained by the police after attending a vigil together weeks earlier — she felt sure that her time was nearing.
“As I record this video, four of my friends have already been taken away,” the woman, age 26, said, speaking clearly into the camera in a video recording from late December obtained by CNN.
“I entrusted some friends of mine with making this video public after my disappearance. In other words, when you see this video, I have been taken away by the police for a while.”
The woman — a recent graduate who is an editor at a publishing house — is among eight people, mainly young, female professionals in the same extended social circle, that CNN has learned have been quietly detained by authorities in the weeks following a peaceful protest in the Chinese capital on November 27.
That protest was one of many that broke out in major cities across the country in an unprecedented showing of discontent with China’s now-dismantled zero-Covid controls.

CNN has confirmed that two of those eight were released on bail Thursday evening and Friday, respectively, just days ahead of the Lunar New Year. One release was confirmed to CNN on Friday by her lawyer, who declined to comment further on whether she had been charged with a crime. The second was confirmed by a source with direct knowledge.
CNN has not been able to confirm whether others were released and if so, how many.
Two of the young women detained, including the editor, have been formally charged with “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” people directly familiar with their cases said Friday — a step that could bring them closer to standing trial, with neither granted bail as of that day.
The overall number of people detained in connection with the protests within China’s notoriously opaque security and judicial systems also remains uncertain.

    Scholars laud Xinjiang moves

World-renowned Islamic religious figures and scholars have highly praised on the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region’s great achievements in development, saying they will share with the rest of the world what they saw with their own eyes in the region.

More than 30 Islamic scholars from 14 countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, headed by Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, chairman of the World Muslim Communities Council, visited Xinjiang from Sunday (8 Jan) to Wednesday.

During the four-day tour, they went to Urumqi, Altay, Kashgar and other cities in Xinjiang and visited a number of historical, cultural and religious sites where they had an opportunity to learn firsthand about the region.

China’s anti-terrorism policies have been very successful with all ethnic groups achieving peaceful coexistence, said Osama Sayyid Al-Azhari, the Egyptian president’s adviser on religious affairs, when attending an exhibition on Xinjiang anti-terrorism and deradicalisation efforts.

The experience in this regard is of vital importance for countries to effectively combat terrorism, he said.

There has been no terrorist attack for six consecutive years in Xinjiang, Xu Guixiang, spokesman for the regional government, said at a news briefing on Friday.

The delegation also showed great interest in and was impressed by Xinjiang’s poverty elimination work, calling the achievements “miracles” which proved the huge advantages of China’s systems.

When visiting a technical vocational college in Kashgar, Al Nuaimi spoke highly of China’s providing employment training services to its citizens, saying it is a pivotal part of Xinjiang’s overall poverty alleviation work.

Abdallah Muhammad Al-Mulla, a journalist from Kuwait, said Xinjiang’s experience in poverty alleviation can be viewed as a shining example for other countries to follow after he had face-to-face talks with local officials and residents at a symposium on rural revitalisation in Kashgar.

When appreciating the Twelve Muqam, a traditional art form known as the “Mother of Uygur Music” in the Xinjiang Museum, Abdallah Uld Mohamadi Bahm, a Mauritanian writer, got a chance to witness Xinjiang’s thriving culture. The Twelve Muqam was listed among the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

The Chinese government has made tremendous efforts to protect the intangible cultural heritage of Xinjiang and has promoted it globally, which is of great significance to the diversity of civilisation, he said.

During a tour of the ancient city of Kashgar, Yousef Al Obaidli, director-general of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center in Abu Dhabi, said Western allegations about the fate of the Uygur culture totally veer from the facts.

It is admirable that the authorities reconstruct the city in line with Uygur culture and tradition and deliver a better life to locals, he added.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular news briefing on Friday that the field trips and true feelings of the delegation once again prove that lies can’t cover up facts.

China sincerely welcomes friends from around the world to visit Xinjiang to feel a region that enjoys a tranquil society, prosperous economy, harmonious ethnic relations and freedom of belief, Wang said.

Yes, I bet he loved it when the Chinky VP visited his mosque, no doubt dishing out a bit of "largesse".

I'm also willing to bet the whole group was kept at a careful distance from the.....

A'www shucks, if I hadn't started this thread interested readers might not even know that China now has over 2/3rd's of the worlds high speed rail network, longevity has exceeded that of the USA, and Xinjiang is booming. Among many other things. The fact you perpetually sulk about it just shows what a good job I am doing.

I assume the chinkies will be whining again.

A Chinese engineer has been jailed for eight years for spying in the US, in a case linked to Chinese efforts to steal aviation trade secrets.

Ji Chaoqun, 31, had identified scientists and engineers for possible recruitment, according to the US Department of Justice.

He also enlisted in the US Army Reserves and lied to recruiters.

US authorities said Ji worked under the direction of a key Chinese state intelligence unit.

Last September he was convicted for acting as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the US attorney-general - a charge used in espionage cases - and of making false statements to the US Army.

I was going to post a story about a young chinese girl who disapeared after being arrested by Chinese police but that happens more often than a mass shooting in America. Hardly turns a head anymore. Either.

Kim Jong-un, through his sister Kim Yo-jung, does the propaganda much better than Winnie the Pooh. Kim Jong-un should lend his sister and barber to Xi for a couple of months.

The theory of how China was defeated financially, economically and militarily by the humble tea cup handle.

it is believed that the invention and widespread use of the handle on ceramic cups in Europe during the medieval period was a significant factor in the development of trade and commerce in Europe. This, in turn, played a role in the economic and technological advancements that led to Europe's eventual surpassing of China in terms of economic and military power. The handle on a cup allowed for the safe and easy transportation of liquids, which greatly facilitated trade and commerce. Prior to the invention of the handle, ceramic cups without handles were easily broken and difficult to carry, which limited their utility and trade potential. The handle made it possible to safely transport and sell ceramic cups, which greatly increased their value and demand. This led to the development of a ceramics industry in Europe and the growth of trade networks. The increased trade and commerce in turn led to economic growth, technological advancements, and the development of more complex societies, which contributed to Europe's eventual surpassing of China in terms of economic and military power.

Chinese teapots had handles for centuries before the European style teacup- but Chinese teacups didn't, and don't to this day unless you drink "Lai Cha"- ie, milk tea.
