Details of Party Congress delegates expounded, 33.6% from frontlines of work and production

Broad representation shows democracy, solid foundation of CPC: experts.

By GT staff reporters Published: Sep 26, 2022 11:20 PM

"After all delegates to attend the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) were selected, officials introduced in detail the characteristics of the delegation, with 33.6 percent of Party members working at the frontlines of work and production, more female representatives and more delegates from ethnic minority groups. Half of them hold postgraduate degrees, and they are from a wide range of walks of life.

Experts believed that such broad representation of delegates and a guarantee of delegates from the frontlines not only shows the solid and wide foundation of the CPC, which maintains continuous succession and exuberant vitality, but also embodies the characteristics of intra-Party democracy. Moreover, the strict process of selection also guaranteed a fully open and transparent procedure to select the best Party representatives from all industries, and guarantee a fruitful convening of the congress.

A total of 2,296 delegates were elected to attend the upcoming 20th National Congress of the CPC, an official statement said on Sunday.

Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the delegates were elected in accordance with the Party Constitution and the CPC Central Committee's requirements, adopting methods required by the CPC Central Committee, the statement said.

An official from the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee held an interview with the Xinhua News Agency, which was published on Monday, and introduced the selection of the delegates.

According to the official, the CPC Central Committee has clear requirements for choosing delegates to attend the upcoming 20th CPC National Congress, which is to prioritize Party members who are working at the frontlines, and make sure the structure of delegates is reasonable and widely representative.

According to the official, there are 771 delegates from the frontlines of work and production, accounting for 33.6 percent of the total. Among them, 192 delegates are workers, occupying 8.4 percent; 85 are farmers, making up 3.7 percent, and 266 professional and technical staffers, accounting for 11.6 percent of the total.

Another characteristic of the delegates features the increasing number of female and ethnic minority representatives. Female delegates total 619, which is 68 more than those who participated in the 19th National Congress of the CPC, and an increase of 2.8 percentage points. Representatives from ethnic minority groups account for 264, or 11.5 percent of the total number, covering 40 ethnic minority groups.

Those delegates are from all walks of life, including the economic, technological, scientific, national defense, health, cultural and sports fields, and ranging from provincial to village and community levels.

The average age of the 2,296 delegates is 52.2 years. Among them, 1,371 delegates, or 59.7 percent, are below 55 years old, and 18.9 percent are below 45 years old.

A total of 52.7 percent of the delegates hold postgraduate degrees and 36 percent hold undergraduate degrees. The official also pointed out that those representatives joined the Party at various periods, yet 2,224 joined after reform and opening-up, accounting for 96.9 percent, and forming the main body of the delegates.

When asked how those delegates were selected out of 96 million Party members in China, the official said that they were recommended by all departments and institutions; and they were put under strict examination via various channels. For example, departments and institutes that were qualified to recommend them should form special groups to take opinions from people about the potential delegates.

The delegates were selected from all levels, from grassroots Party organizations to institutes that were qualified to select and make sure the best candidates were chosen."

China appreciates Solomon Islands PM’s ‘clear, powerful’ speech against attempts to jeopardize bilateral ties: FM

By Global Times Published: Sep 26, 2022 07:20 PM

"Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson on Monday said that China appreciates Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare's speech during the 77th session of UN General Assembly which strongly fought back against the smears and accusations regarding the relations between the two countries, noting that China will support Solomon Islands to take its independent develop path as always.

Prime Minister Sogavare's statement is very clear and powerful, countering the unfounded criticism and false accusation against the China-Solomon Islands relations and making a just voice regarding the situation of the Taiwan Straits, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin at a routine news conference on Monday.

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister said at the opening debate of the 77th session of UN General Assembly on Friday that his country has been vilified in the media since formalizing its relationship with China, reiterating the call for all to respect the country's sovereignty and democracy. He also called on all countries to be sensitive and not inflame tensions that can threaten the unity and security of any country when speaking over the Taiwan Straits.

Sogavare said that Solomon Islands will not be coerced into choosing sides, and will not align with any external power(s) or security architecture that targets other country or threaten regional and international peace.

Wang said that China highly appreciates Sogavare's statement which defended the legitimate right of China and Solomon Islands in carrying out normal exchanges and cooperation."

China urges developed countries not to stop energy restructuring

By Fan Anqi and Zhao Juecheng Published: Sep 22, 2022 11:12 PM

"As world leaders, especially the heads of state of "drowning" island nations, sit together to face one of the most persistent and pressing issues - climate change - at the UN General Assembly, the US once again played up its political game with its latest ratification of a climate treaty, pointing fingers at China while ignoring its own duties both as the largest cumulative emitter of greenhouse gases and a major world power that is obliged to help developing countries achieve their emission reduction goals.

In contrast to the US' irresponsible moves, China has been making steady progress toward its carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets, Chinese diplomats said, while urging developed countries, including the US, to fulfill their commitments and achieve carbon neutrality.

During a private meeting of Heads of State and Government held on Wednesday at the UN Headquarters in New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for more action and leadership to tackle the climate crisis, warning that efforts to keep the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels is "on life support."

In his address to the meeting, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a four-point proposal, stressing that countries should not abandon efforts in energy restructuring because of COVID-19 or the energy crisis, and should follow the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, taking action to meet the temperature control targets set by the Paris Agreement with greater speed.

Wang called on all sides to give up their unilateral stance and geopolitical wrestling in tackling global challenges, adding that developed countries should achieve carbon neutrality in advance, making room for developing countries and rebuilding trust.

Developed countries should fulfill their commitments and provide financial, technological and capacity-building support to developing countries, Wang added."

Solomon Islands Threatens to Ban Journalists After China Reports

The Solomon Islands government threatened to ban “disrespectful and demeaning” journalists from entering in response to an Australian documentary that alleged widespread Beijing influence in the Pacific country.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare accused the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) of promoting “racism and racial stereotyping” in a lengthy statement published Wednesday, and warned the government would “ensure that racial practices are eliminated from the Solomon Islands.”

“Such organizations or journalist who possess such qualities will not be allowed to enter Solomon Islands and other Pacific Islands nations,” Sogavare’s spokesperson said in the statement.

    Your misleading title:

China ... offered us huge bribes, say Solomon Islands MPs

    From your link:

    The alleged Beijing offer:

"Daniel Sudaini, the premier of Malaita, Solomon Islands’ largest province, alleges he was offered a bribe in exchange for softening his strong anti-Beijing position.

"a group of people or maybe someone who called me on the phone to give me an offer

Offering, via a phone call! From who, a Chinese official, a Taiwan official, a NaGastan official .....

Whereas the Taiwan by name stated offer:

"Titus Fika, a government MP who chaired one inquiry that ended up recommending the government change its allegiance from Taiwan to China, denied that money influenced the decision of his committee.

Instead, Fika accused Taiwan of trying to corrupt the process, saying he was offered a bribe from Taiwan to keep the status quo.

“Taiwan wanted to bribe [me]. They wanted to give us $1m to sign for Taiwan then after we sign for Taiwanwe will receive another [$1m] into our account,” he said.

An unnamed person from Taiwan face to face, a phone call, an email ...

Two conflicting reports from a "neutral" Guardian.

    Fun fact:

AidData's analysis shows that for every dollar of aid to low-income and middle-income countries, China has provided $9 of debt. The opposite is true of the U.S.: For every dollar of debt that it provides to low-income and middle-income countries, it provides at least $9 of aid.

More fun facts from Harry's ..AidData:

The book debunks popular myths about China’s overseas development program, including the idea that Beijing uses aid to prop up rogue regimes and debt to ensnare and subordinate unsuspecting governments. Its central conclusion is that Beijing is neither the global development “hero” promoted by its allies and clients nor the “villain” caricatured by its rivals and critics.

Global spread of fake China story creates credibility crisis

THERE ARE RED FACES all over the media this week after an insane story about a coup in China was shared around the world.

Huge numbers of journalists, east and west, took a clearly invented tale about the arrest of Chinese leader Xi Jinping seriously. “Where there’s smoke there’s fire, as they say, and there is a column of smoke the likes of which we haven’t seen since July 64 AD pouring out of Beijing,” said the Australian edition of The Spectator, a UK title.

The ludicrous tale spread through the Internet worldwide, reaching millions of readers as it rose sharply on Google trends worldwide. In India, it reached the list of top three biggest news stories, despite not containing a word of truth.

Many versions included the information that there was no evidence for the story – but omitted the fact that under the most basic rules of journalism, stories with zero evidence would normally not be considered printable. The fact that it was so widely reported is yet another nail in the coffin of mainstream media credibility, said numerous voices on social media.

    Here’s what happened:

In the past few days, Jennifer Zeng, a member of the Falun Gong (a cult whose leader Li Hongzhi teaches that space aliens introduced science into the world so they can take control of human bodies), put out an astonishing story that was picked up and spread by people like Gordon Chang, a United States. anti-China campaigner. Ms Zeng, who also conducts an anti-China campaign from the U.S., spread the “rumor” on Twitter and later on her blog and YouTube that there had been a coup in China. It was accompanied by a short video of army vehicles on the road.

She provided no sources or evidence of any kind.

This is the scary thing: THAT DIDN’T MATTER.

    MAJOR MEDIA SHARED IT

Major western publication Newsweek wrote up the story, saying that there was no evidence as yet, adding: “Newsweek has contacted the Chinese Foreign ministry for comment.”

The allegation also appeared on MSN.com, which said: “The rumour goes – Xi Jinping has been removed as the head of China’s People’s Liberation Army or PLA and has been placed under house arrest.” The version printed by MSN, lifted from an Indian source, seemed to add meat to the story: “There have been reports of some sort of revolt within the China’s People’s Liberation Army over the ‘Zero Covid Policy’ in China that mandates anyone who travels out of the country to undergo a rigorous quarantine process.”

The tale of the Chinese leader’s arrest was also taken seriously in the UK, with the Daily Telegraph printing that “The increasingly febrile atmosphere coincided with unusual rumours swirling online on Saturday about a potential military coup.”

    ALSO IN INDIA AND AMERICA

In India, the rumor was printed by large and small media, including big names such as The Hindustan Times, ZeeNews India, India Today, Daily News and Analysis, and many others, and was the talk of the country.

In America, most newspaper steered clear, but popular online news site newsmax.com went to town on it: “ ‘Something is up with China and its President Xi Jinping, but ‘we don’t know what it is,’ retired Air Force Brigadier Gen. Blaine Holt said Sunday on Newsmax in response to the rumors reports of an attempted coup against the two-term leader.”

Jennifer Zeng’s religious group, Falun Gong, which produces news media under titles such as Epoch Times and NDTV, has been a major source of anti-China news. It is widely supported by the anti-China lobby in Hong Kong, including UK-based Benedict Rogers, a right-wing political activist. Rogers has spoken at Falun Gong meetings and is a key figure guiding UK parliamentary policy on Hong Kong.

    DEATH OF CREDIBILITY

It’s not clear whether the tale was invented by the Falun Gong or anti-China sources in India. Ms Zeng pushed follow-up posts backtracking on her report later but it was too late.

Many voices around the world are today shaking their heads in amazement at the implosion of journalistic standards. “Honestly, I can’t believe anyone would be so stupid as to discuss a coup in China without first verifying that it actually happened,” said Jerry Grey, a popular British-Australian commentator based in China.

“The whole thing seems like a massive own goal for Zeng, NTD/Epoch and anyone else sharing it,” said Curt McArdle, a British teacher. “All it does is paint them as either gullible or untrustworthy…”

The affair leaves the world with an urgent question about journalism which needs answering, some commentators said. “Why are we—not just China or the US but practically the whole world—so soft with journalists spreading unverified stories?” asked Jerry Wang on Twitter.

Davide Melia, who works as a teacher in China, said: “I am quite jealous of people who get paid good money to just sit around and occasionally churn out completely made-up stuff that a not-insignificant number of people will take totally at face value.”

    Now that's hilarious.

First I’ve seen of that story and I read news for hours, but I don’t view whack-job sites where this “story” spread. A non-story.

    As for “rumors” who cares.
