This assessment responds to the President’s request that the Intelligence Community (IC) update its previous judgments on the origins of COVID-19.

In addition, the IC was able to reach broad
agreement on several other key issues.

We judge the virus was not developed as a biological weapon.

Most agencies also assess with low confidence that SARS-CoV-2 probably was not genetically engineered; however, two agencies believe there was no sufficient evidence to make an assessment either way.

    Finally, the IC assesses
China’s officials did not have foreknowledge of the virus before the initial outbreak of COVID-19 emerged. "

    1. "occurred no later than November 2019".

But possibly before, has not been eliminated.

    2. "the first known cluster of COVID-19 cases arising in Wuhan".

Further investigations may provide another "first known cluster", if they are ever undertaken elsewhere.

"There's nothing to worry about but there's going to be an emergency"

China's government has urged citizens to stock up on daily necessities and for authorities to take steps to ensure adequate food supplies as the country adopts increasingly tight measures to contain its latest Covid outbreak.

A notice posted on the website of the Ministry of Commerce late on Monday urged "families to store a certain amount of daily necessities as needed to meet daily life and emergencies".
The directive made no mention of a food shortage or of whether the instructions were motivated by fears that Covid measures could disrupt supply chains or leave locked-down citizens in need of food.

'Stock up', China says, amid new Covid outbreak

Overkill? Perhaps, but they don't want to end up like this-
In the United States, there were12,570 newly reported COVID-19 cases and 46 newly reported COVID-19 deaths on Nov 01, 2021
US COVID-19 cases and deaths by state | USAFacts

In comparison, China with three times the population-
Ninety-two new cases were reported Monday, the highest since mid-September.
And of course, the Beijing Olympics coming up.

"The MOFCOM reminded local authorities to stabilize prices and encouraged families to store a certain amount of daily necessities as needed, but this does not mean those necessities are in short supply.

As I understand, there are plenty of supplies across the country. Vegetable prices also show signs of decline. In Northern China, there is a tradition of storing up cabbage and radishes before the winter. Families who have the condition can buy more and store some, and the government is encouraging such a household stock habit."

Like when they went after that bloke for saying there was a human-transmissible coronavirus on the loose in Wuhan...

The police believed this virus was not confirmed to be SARS. They believed I was spreading rumors. They asked me to acknowledge that I was at fault.
I felt I was being wronged, but I had to accept it. Obviously I had been acting out of good will. I felt very sad seeing so many people losing their loved ones.

American elites biggest threat to democracy, at home and the world

In US foreign strategy, the export of democracy has always been important. But this didn't work well in the past years. Why? Perhaps it is because the so-called like-minded countries of the US, and even Americans themselves, no longer believe US democracy sets a good example.

According to a Pew Research Center poll on Monday, "very few think American democracy is a good example for other countries to follow."

It shows that outside the US, a median of 80 percent of respondents say US democracy "used to be a good example, but has not been in recent years," or the US has never been a good example for democracy. Americans are just about as negative - with only 19 percent saying US democracy provides a good example.

If people around the world are asked to list recent achievements of the US, they may need some time before naming one or two. However, if the question is about problems with US democracy, cases are ready to roll off the tongue. For example, the US' inept COVID-19 fight that has killed more than 748,000, the racial discrimination that hasn't improved but worsened since George Floyd's murder, the empty shelves in grocery stores, and supply chain problems.

Some of these are "milestones" for the US - but not the milestones ordinary Americans hope to see. The US is no longer the "beacon of democracy," but becoming more like a laughingstock of democracy.

"The Pew survey results show ordinary people have a clearer head than elites. The results are meaningful," Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations of the China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times.

"If the US, where white supremacy prevails and somehow dominates; where elites and ordinary people are divided, while elites also seriously contradict each other; where governance has failed, sets a good example for democracy, then what kind of democracy is a bad example?" Li noted. "US democracy is an insult to 'democracy.'"

However, Washington is still attacking and smearing other countries under the guise of democracy and pointing a finger at other countries' so-called democratic problems. The US is in no position to preach democracy to others, but its elites are not as aware.

Those elites seem to be living in a parallel universe and cannot see the sufferings of ordinary Americans. In their eyes, good stock market numbers mean a good economy, which in turn means a sound livelihood for people. To them, despite the port logjam and empty shelves in stores, high prices is "a good thing" because it reflects a healthy, growing economy.

"Living high on the hog, US elites don't understand the ordinary people's hardships. They lack empathy and respect. The result is their blind belief that the US is always a model for the world. But this is clearly not the case for most people of the world," Li said.

Another poll on Monday, the NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, found that 81 percent of Americans believe there is a serious threat to the future of US democracy - and are evenly split on whether Democrats or Republicans pose a bigger threat.

From this perspective, US bipartisan elites' practice of democracy is satire. They have failed to see the world from the other's perspective, and have not responded to the American people's real needs. To them, democracy is the best tool to reap political gains. So it is not hyperbole to say those elites are the biggest threat to US democracy.

In May this year, a global poll commissioned by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation among 50,000 respondents in 53 countries showed that the US is seen as a bigger threat to democracy than Russia or China. With so many tricks, the US has failed to fool the world. Maybe it is time for US elites to focus on solving problems at home instead of preaching "democracy" globally by so-called American standards.

Like, ouch. Those numbers are damning.

^ Cheers for that link Nort, interesting reading- I was gonna look it up myself. A bit of cherry picking by our friends in GT, but those 'state of democracy' figures I found pretty startling. GT does not point out that the poll was from advanced countries only though.

You have to admit the Republican PR machine is a powerful tool. They seem to be able to convince Americans of almost anything.

The Democrats are shit at it.

On GPS: How the Biden White House views China

    A reply from China:

The US must prove it no longer seeks to change China’s system: Global Times editorial

By Global Times Published: Nov 08, 2021 10:03 PM

"US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in an interview with CNN broadcast on Sunday that one of the US' errors of previous approaches to policy toward China was a belief that through US policy, the Chinese system will fundamentally transform. Yet this is not the object of the Biden administration. Sullivan mentioned that "The goal of America's China policy is to create a circumstance in which two major powers are going to have to operate in an international system for the foreseeable future." He added that the environment should be "more favorable to the interests and values of the US and its allies and partners."

As national security advisor, Sullivan said the US government is no longer trying to transform China's system. This can be regarded as a step in a positive direction for Washington. At the same time, we need to see the Democratic administration focuses on ideology a lot. Sullivan made such a statement not because the US has lost the will to "transform China," but because the US has reluctantly accepted a reality: To transform China is something that the US cannot achieve.

Transforming the world is the basic political thinking of the US, which corresponds to its deep-rooted security concept. In other words, the US is keen to change the systems and behaviors of other countries. In addition to its Christian missionary mentality, it is more important to eliminate external threats, and increase the US' security and interests by this means.

The Soviet Union collapsed this way during the Cold War with the US. As a result, the US has dominated the world as the sole superpower. This is a typical example of the US succeeding in reinventing an adversary. But more typically, instead of becoming a partner of the US and Europe by accepting the basic framework of Western institutions, Russia has been further attacked by the US because Russia is too powerful.

Politically, Japan has been completely Westernized and has maintained US military presence on its soil for a long time. Its rapid economic rise last century shocked Washington, and the "Japan threat" became another major concern of US elites. The US took action and cracked down on Japan's competitiveness. This period of history tells people how much the US refuses to accept strategic challenges from the outside world.

Behind the US' attempt to "transform China" is Washington's consistent prejudice against socialism. Apart from that, the US' fundamental goal is to dismantle the engine of China's emergence, and break up China's mobilization and unity. If the US could succeed, such an approach could best consolidate US hegemony at the lowest cost.

However, from the Trump administration, the US has become more and more frustrated with such propositions and tactics. It has especially lost confidence in achieving the goal through an engagement strategy. So the US started to shift its strategy toward containment against China, initiated by the Trump administration and continued and completed by Biden's team. Managing "intense competition" has become a new slogan of the Biden administration.

The political elite in the US will not accept the Chinese system. They actually just acknowledged the reality that China's system cannot be shaken externally, so instead, they tried to figure out what they can do to undermine the constant vitality that the Chinese system infuses into the country's development, to eventually crumble the system. This is what the Biden administration means by "intense competition."

While we are not hoping for Washington's strategic goodwill, we can still make use of Sullivan's statement in a positive way. After all, such a statement would help ease China-US relations, and we should ask the US to put that statement into action and reduce its political interference in China's internal affairs.

Not pursuing to transform China's system is a way for the US to shrink back from difficulties after acknowledging them. What has prompted the US to make such an adjustment is China's continued success and its increased political confidence that goes along with it. As China will continue to maintain its willpower and momentum of growth, the US' ambitions to encircle and suffocate China will be dismantled, and China's strong development will help continue the country's strategic initiative. "

He is right though, this is a massively nationalistic Indian news channel. The girls tone of voice is so telling and I have seen them highlighting some issues that turned out to be fake news or at the very least heavily massaged.

Inhumane? You mean like killing at least a million people this century for a spurious, losing "war on terror"?
Or lifting close to a billion people out of poverty into middle class affluence?
And achieving a 90%+ approval rating from your own citizens in the process?

I doubt they give a noodle what you might think, ignorant laowai. Haters gonna Hate.
