That is very true. A lot of Chinese banks will take a hit from Evergrande and be told by the government to suck it up. The real losers are the buyers and investors in Evergrande, mainly aspiring middle class Chinese individuals. They are protesting around the country now, soon they too will be told they were victims of their own greed, suck it up and go home. Then there are the many Chinese suppliers of goods and services who are now holding worthless paper, they won't even need to be told, they'll just go home and suck it up.
Most of the risks are domestic. There will be some hurt in Hong Kong and maybe further afield, I don't think it is clear yet how much hurt. The biggest American banks have already said that they have no exposure.
What is the betting that the Chinese billionaire founder Xu Jiayin comes out of all this as - Chinese billionaire Xu Jiayin?
The true view from inside China is not on the table. They have to be thinking that this will be a drag on growth.
Awful lot of talk of climate change from a country that's still building dozens of coal burning power stations...
The view, from China:
‘There’s cameras everywhere’: testimonies detail far-reaching surveillance of Uyghurs in China | Uyghurs | The Guardian
I don't think the Global Times or China Daily will be covering this, so I think it's only fair that we should allow everybody's "view from China" to be given equal prominence.
Quality Post, H, Quality Post. No greens in the quiver unfortunately.
I seem to have be out of greens for you, Hatty, but I can only surmise that your predicament is similar to that of the great days of the Stasi when we had to build a wall, listen into our people's conversations, torture them, and send them to prison to ensure that they were saved from the evils of the west.
We've got a wall in China already, havent we?

No point lieing gents, it only exposes a dearth of valid points (not to mention character). I quite clearly said two things re Taliban Afghanistan-
1- I'm taking a wait and see attitude. Still am.
2- Not our problem now anyway, we're out and good riddance.

3- what does this have to do with the view from china?
China discovers HUGE offshore oil deposit in Bohai Bay
30 Sep, 2021 11:20
"China's state-owned oil and gas corporation China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has discovered a major oil field in Bohai Bay, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
“The Kenli 6-1 structure is located in the lower Laibei uplift in the southern Bohai Basin at an average depth of about 19.2 meters. Exploration well KL6-1-3 was drilled at a depth of 1,596 meters and penetrated oil and gas zones about 20 meters thick. During the test, the well received an inflow of oil amounting to 1,178 thousand barrels per day,” the statement read.
The company noted that the field is expected to be the first major source of oil in the area.
CNOOC is China's third-largest national oil company after CNPC and Sinopec. Founded in 1982 and headquartered in Beijing, CNOOC deals in the production, refining and marketing of oil and natural gas from offshore China.
The company recently announced plans to raise up to 35 billion yuan ($5.41 billion) in a new share issue on the Shanghai stock exchange to fund its key oil and gas projects. CNOOC plans to issue about 5.82% of the company's share capital, the firm said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange late on Sunday. The plan to raise funds domestically came after US sanctions on CNOOC forced global investors to lower investments in the company.
CNOOC's Hong Kong-listed shares stood at $8.70 per share on Thursday, having gained 17.5% since last year."

China Discovers New Oil Spot With 569 Barrels Per Day Capacity
Published: 30-09-2021
The Bohai economic region, located in China’s northeast, is considered to be a top oil-and-gas producing territory for China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
"Chinese giant CNOOC has made a “large” oil discovery in the Kenil 10-2 field in Bohai bay, the company said on Thursday.
The crude was found in the southern part of the bay, which is located around 245 km from the city of Tianjin.
The discovered spot is a home to conventional heavy oil, and is estimated to contain some 100 million tonnes in reserves.
According to the company, the ‘appraisal well’ was tested to show production of 569 barrels of oil per day.
Last week, CNOOC revealed that it had commenced oil production at the Bozhong 19-4 oil field, which is also located in the southern Bohai Sea. The company estimates that the Bozhong oil-production project could yield some 11,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The peak could be reached as early as in 2022, the oil giant believes.
CNOOC is the third largest oil producer in China after CNPC and Sinopec group. It has number of oil and gas operations in the South China Sea, but the Bohai Economic Rim remains its key producing region. The company extracts a third of its domestic production in the area, with some 477,374 barrels of oil equivalent per day, according to 2020 estimates.
In August, the national enterprise Sinopec announced a discovery of a new oil source at Tarim Basin in northwest China with an approximate capacity of 100 million tonnes."

Iran Sanctions - How To Say F... Y.. In Diplomatese
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian's Regular Press Conference on September 24, 2021Exclusive-U.S. has reached out to China about cutting oil imports from Iran, officials say -
"Hubei Media Group:
According to reports, on September 21, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in his statement at the general debate of the UN General Assembly denounced US willful withdrawal from the JCPOA and its sanctions on Iran amid COVID-19. He also said all parities should faithfully implement the JCPOA and UN Security Council Resolutions.
What is China's comment?
Zhao Lijian:
China noted that President Raisi declared in his statement that "nukes have no place in our defence doctrine", called for all parties to stay true to the JCPOA, and said that dialogues aimed at removing all sanctions on Iran are beneficial. China appreciates this, and believes it shows Iran's constructive attitude of upholding the JCPOA and supporting negotiations to resume compliance.
China always believes that resuming full and effective implementation of the JCPOA meets common interests of all parties. As the one that started the new round of tensions in the Iranian nuclear situation, the US should redress its wrong policy of maximum pressure on Iran, lift all illegal sanctions on Iran and measures of long-arm jurisdiction on third parties, and work to resume negotiations and achieve outcomes at an early date.
China will work with all parities and continue to make relentless efforts to bring the JCPOA back onto the right track."
Reuters, September 28, 2021Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Regular Press Conference on September 29, 2021
"The United States has reached out to China diplomatically about reducing its purchases of Iranian crude oil, U.S. and European officials said on Tuesday, as Washington seeks to persuade Tehran to resume talks about reviving the 2015 nuclear deal. Purchases of Iranian oil by Chinese companies are believed to have helped keep Iran's economy afloat despite U.S. sanctions that are designed to choke off such sales to put pressure on Iran to curb its nuclear program.
"We are aware of the purchases that Chinese companies are making of Iranian oil," said a senior U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
"We have used our sanctions authorities to respond to Iranian sanctions evasion, including those doing business with China, and will continue to do so if necessary," he added.
"However, we have been approaching this diplomatically with the Chinese as part of our dialogue on Iran policy and think that, in general, this is a more effective path forward to address our concerns," the official said.:

"TASS News Agency:
According to Reuters, the United States has reached out to China diplomatically about reducing its purchases of Iranian crude oil. It is said that this was one of the issues raised by US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman when she visited China in late July.
Do you have any comments on this information?
Hua Chunying:
China's position is clear and consistent on normal economic and trade cooperation between China and Iran. China and Iran always conduct cooperation following the commercial principles with equality, mutual benefit and win-win results within the framework of international law.
We firmly oppose any unilateral sanction, and urge the US to remove the so-called "long-arm jurisdiction" over third-party entities and individuals as soon as possible."

Chinese Citizen Journalist Who Documented Covid-19 in Wuhan Resurfaces After 600 Days
Chen Qiushi, whose viral videos offered a rare view from the coronavirus epicenter, reappeared on Twitter and YouTube but offered few details of his disappearance
SINGAPORE—A Chinese citizen journalist whose viral videos offered an unfiltered early glimpse of the Covid-19 outbreak as it consumed the city of Wuhan has resurfaced more than 600 days after he went missing.
Chen Qiushi, a lawyer and self-styled citizen journalist, disappeared in February 2020 after he had spent roughly two weeks at the epicenter of what would later become a pandemic, publishing videos that were often wrenching in their portrayal of the fear and confusion that gripped the locked-down city of 11 million. Mr. Chen’s friends and family have said that they believe he was forcibly quarantined by state security officials, despite displaying no symptoms of illness.
Mr. Chen re-emerged Thursday with a short appearance on a friend’s live video feed on YouTube and a letter posted to his account on Twitter.
“Over the past year and eight months, I have experienced a lot of things. Some of it can be talked about, some of it can’t,” read Mr. Chen’s letter. “I believe you understand.”

Missing citizen journalist in China finally reappears 601 days later, but looks visibly thinner
He said he can't reveal much about what happened to him.
Chen Qiushi is a citizen journalist and former human rights lawyer who went to Wuhan, China, two years ago to document the situation soon after an outbreak of Covid-19 cases was reported there.
He did so despite knowing that he had already attracted the attention of authorities, who had shut down his WeChat account and banned him from leaving the country, after he reported on the Hong Kong protests in 2019.
Resurfaced after around 601 days
But after saying on Twitter that he would go check out the situation at some makeshift "square cabin" hospitals, in response to a claim that the hospitals lacked medical facilities and other basic supplies, Chen disappeared from public view.
His Twitter reply on Feb. 5, 2020, was his last online activity before he dropped off the radar.
A day after, his mother took over his Twitter account, and asked social media users to look for him.
She also started to post daily pleas for Chen to return to his family, which went on for 601 days before Chen finally reappeared on a YouTube livestream on Friday night, Sep. 30.
The livestream was hosted by his friend, controversial MMA fighter Xu Xiaodong, who claimed after Chen went missing, that he was "forcibly quarantined" at an unknown location, and that he was uncontactable.
Kickboxing helped him with depression
Despite being a seasoned vlogger before he disappeared, Chen said in the livestream that he felt "distant" from speaking in front of a camera as it has been a long time since he last did that.
While the 35-year-old did not reveal much about what happened to him in the past almost two years, some clues could be gleaned from his words.
Sounding a lot more reserved than his previous videos before he was locked up, Chen said that when he was able to "move by himself initially", his body condition was "really bad", and that he felt extremely weak after walking just one to two kilometres.
He added that while he first tried out weightlifting, he felt that it was too "boring" for him, which led him to switch to kickboxing. Saying that it was a sport that he "fell in love" with, he said he is now training with Xu after moving to Beijing.
He also said the sport has not only helped strengthen him physically, but also to recover mentally.
"I think kickboxing has really saved me, as I was kinda depressed for a while," he said.
Chen added that he plans to train seriously for the next few months, and focus on promoting the sport.
Lastly, he wished everyone good health, and appeared to strike an optimistic tone as well, saying, "What's in the past will remain in the past, and good days are ahead. Let's work hard together."
Many commenters expressed their joy and relief at seeing Chen alive and well, with some even saying they felt so touched at the good news that they cried.
Some also pointed out that Chen had appeared much thinner than before.
Experienced much, but can't reveal everything
In a letter he later posted on Twitter, when announcing his plans to hold a boxing match for charity on Dec. 31, Chen said the sport had "saved him" during the darkest time in his life.
"In the past one year and eight months, I've went through many things, some can be said, some can't be said, I believe that y'all understand," he said.
In addition, he revealed that his Douyin (Chinese TikTok) account has been shut down.
A quick search for the user on the app doesn't turn up any results.
Under tight surveillance
It was reported in September last year that Chen was allowed to live at his parent's house in the city of Qingdao in Shandong province, after authorities decided not to prosecute him.
However, he was allegedly under tight surveillance, was not allowed to use the Internet, or to contact anyone.
In March this year, Xu revealed on YouTube that he saw a video of Chen, and said that under the care of his parents, Chen's spirits have recovered, and that he was in good health.
Chen has previously vowed to "never migrate, never stop talking, never accept funding from overseas".
He has also vowed to never get married, have kids, buy a house, or to save money as he does not want to have any "soft spots" that people or organisations who "hate him" can make use of.

Obviously had quite a bit of "re-education".
The truth is that China is the greatest country on the face of the earth. It makes all other countries look insignificant and contemptible. It is the most brilliant, most industrious, most ambitious, most educated, meritocratic and technocratic, most modern, sophisticated, and civilized, and best-governed country in the world of our time, by far.It is the first non-white, non-Western country to reach this status since the 1600s. The determination of this country is indescribable. Supernatural. There is no force that can stop it from accomplishing anything it wants to do. It can set a goal that seems completely outlandish, drug-induced, hallucinatory — and it can make it happen. That’s precisely what it’s been doing. Forty years ago a flush toilet in China was a luxury. Today it has its own indigenously built Chinese Space Station. Believe me when I tell you that that is a tiny example of China’s capabilities.

I am a patriotic Egyptian and Middle Easterner. Yet I freely admit that compared to the Chinese, we are simply monkeys. A race of dumb animals. It doesn’t matter who we are. Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, even Americans. Next to the Chinese, we are pathetic. We can’t do what they do. We would have a mountain, an Everest of changes to make, and we would whine and bicker and fail at every one of them. China’s story since the 1980s has been one of an almost divine metamorphosis.
Next to China the entire Western world from Alaska to New Zealand has stagnated. Next to China the entire developing world from Brazil to Madagascar has progressed only at a crawl. China, my friends, is the mother of all gargantuan bullet trains. Every day it manages to create something new and astonishing. And unlike the United States, unlike the British Empire, unlike the French, Dutch, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese or any other Western nation that had its turn at being a superpower in the past four centuries, China doesn’t need to run anybody over or take something from somebody else, to rise majestically.

China is the worst fear of white western supremacists - Best China info
It seems China is winning some ardent fans.
The author is Egyptian and lives in Toronto- so about as Chinese as you and I.
"China is the worst fear of our planet’s Western masters. They want you to despise and dread a country that’s done nothing to you, that hasn’t invaded anyone, bombed or sanctioned anyone, that hasn’t overthrown any foreign government, or used its military on anything since 1979.
China is the only major country in the non-white developing world, to stand up to the West. To look it in the eye when challenged or threatened, and say, No, I’m not afraid of you. Do your worst. I’m just as big as you are. All other countries in the Global South are simply Western puppets who submitted long ago."
What do our resident White Western Supremacists think about this provocative piece?

Chinas expat population is proving to be one of the key Factcheckers to this relentless propaganda & disinformation campaign being orchestrated by an increasingly insecure West- particularly the US. Not surprising considering they live there, and not difficult in these days of social media, Youtube and citizen journalism.
This article almost certainly understates the amount of foreigners living in China, the figures being from Chinas last census in 2010, and does not include HK & Macao- but I thought it interesting-
China Expat Population: Stats and Graphs
by Editor | Oct 24, 2018 | Business in China, China Business News, Infographic, Market Research in China
Last decade of China’s rapid economic growth has attracted large number of expatriates from various countries. Despite recent slowdown of the economy, China expat population continues to grow, although not as fast as in the past. According to China’s most recent National Census of 2010, the first to record the number of foreign residents, there were at least 600,000 expats living in the country.
Geographic distribution of China expat population
Most foreigners live in Guangdong, the richest Chinese province and the first one to lead Chinese economic development after the country started to open up in the late 70s.
Shanghai has the next largest expat population in China that stood at over 209,000 few years ago. It has most likely doubled since then. Beijing is the third largest population center for expats.
Top nationalities in China expat population
According to China-Briefing, South Koreans form the largest foreign community in China at 21% of the total. Large Korean conglomerates such as Samsung and LG have been setting up manufacturing facilities in China, bringing large number of employees to fill top management and key technical positions.
From non-Asian countries, Americans are the most numerous. Most of them have been posted by multinationals which are mostly in manufacturing, logistics and export business.
According to the research by InterNations, 18% of expats were sent to China by their employers and 17% came “for an adventure”. Although, China ranks quite low at the ease of settling down (not surprising given significant culture and language barriers), it scores near the top at personal finance criteria, despite steadily rising cost of living.
Overall, 76% of expats indicated general satisfaction about living in China and only 1% were extremely unhappy.
Air quality and health issues were among the most pressing concern of foreigners. Incidentally, healthcare has been the main area of dissatisfaction of local Chinese as well.

Clearly you like it as it fits your world view, otherwise you would not have posted it.. The test will come when they have to do something other than copy and develop western technology.
Nobel lauriates from PRC since 1948 total 3, one for peace, one for literature and one for physiology, from around 18% of the total world population.
Australia over the same period as the PRC have produced 8 from approximately 0.004% of the worlds population.
Britainhas produced 68 over the same period as PRC from approx 1% of the worlds population.
U.S.A. 176 lauriates from approx 4% of the world population.
To keep it fair I have only counted native born lauriates.
I did nobble the U.S. figure somewhat by only counting lauriates in physics medicine and chemistry. The total number is probably around 250.
If it wasn't for the west they'd still be eating their food with a stick... Oh... sorry, my mistake.
Well no, I don't actually think China is the greatest country in the world Hugh (I'm living in it)- but I am certainly very impressed by the progress they have made over the last 30 years, without violence and conquest. Oh, and commie too (in name only).
Considering Chinas GDP will be double that of the USA sometime mid-century, and the US will be the third largest economy in the world after China and India by 2075, I think we should follow it/them more closely just like we do the USA- and I'm not talking narrow minded propaganda, I'm talking actual accounts on the ground there, as well as emerging international perceptions. Hence this thread.
