Are you including the hundreds of thousands of ugly grey tower blocks they had erected in the countries they rolled into in your assessment?

    Aahhhhh Bohemian baroque
Many of the Baroque architects who worked, lived and often also died in the Czech lands came from different countries or were of foreign origin, mainly Italian, some came also from Bavaria, Austria or France.

    ^ No worries, Herman . . . sent you a green instead.

People tend to focus on the 'popular' issues like China, forgetting the pains and struggles in Europe and other places . . . it takes a pile of human faeces like Klongdick to remind us that remnants and beneficiaries of atrocities still live among us . . . as Hal puts it so well:

For the ones who wants to know something more than some brainwashed blabbers:

When the leaders of Czechoslovak govt returned from Moscow they were embraced and accoladed by population. Two young stars, singer and actress had prepared a "hijack" of Dubček - who despite his heavy communist past - had become that time very popular, showing a "human face of communism". (a small embarrassment occurred, the prepared necklet was lost in the car):

The young actress Iva Janžurová is nowadays one of most honoured actress. Me living in the same apartment house with her and her husband, also actor and theater director (now deceased), seeing them often in Prague during my visits.

Herewith a photo with her at backstage of National Theater in Prague during intermission, with my late wife, also with us a wife of my colleague taking the snapshot:

How surprising that after the famous signing the help did not come from them. After all, the Czechoslovakia had a Friendship Treaty with France and England. Nor from the country the Czechs and Slovak - as many in Europe - always dreamt of (they never thought about that, they still had had a good business relation with Hitler).

But waiting on Uncle Joe? Actually, it will come as a surprise to many that the Bolsheviks did have offered the help.

Here is the record of the Czech Radio when the Minister of Propaganda (Official name) announced why the govt refused the help from USSR:

Mnichov a druha republika – My jsme to nevzdali

(to scroll down to the 5th record from below:

(Perhaps our expert on Czechs - and on everything - can translate that...)

BTW, who was the propaganda minister Hugo Vavrečka? Incidentally (?) he was a grandfather of the First Postcommunist President of Czechoslovakia, later also of Czech Republic, Václav Havel.

How wonderful your knowledge... Perhaps 1st-hand from StaSi?

The reality is that many of the former high position people - and many of their kins - had made a good use of the wildwest years after the 1989 "Velvet Revolution" (what actually was no revolution).

And beside the fact that Poland had bitten off a piece of Czechoslovakia immediately after Hitler invasion, foolishly hoping on a good future with him according to their old treaty...

About the "Massacre", there is a lot to discuss...

What did your great grandpa done to Russians that he was so afraid of them? And he wasn't afraid of Germans that they would get him? Or was he a German, that's why he knew what he did to them?

Anyway, that's a good example of the brainwashing: "Russians coming, Russians coming..."

Yes, such office location I had had and the views with all the surrounding is hardly a good luck of some. I left shortly before 1980 with family (with wife and 2 boys), leaving everything behind, not sure whether we will not be returned from the border and having our apartment checked to see what was our intention (as we heard sometimes).

And in case we really will be allowed to get through, which direction should we choose? Not having anything reserved from the fear our intention not to return to be discovered. And where to sleep tonight in this freeze day, not having much money to survive few days in hotels. Quite an irresponsible decision laying heavily on me. But that's quite a long story...

In my days in Prague the streets were not full of strangers, with my colleagues we enjoyed daily a good time when gathering in chosen restaurant for a lunch. Where we go today, quite a few choices, mostly over the Karls Bridge 700 years old. Just few tourists around where I sometimes showed off (in front of my mates) my ingenious languages knowledge when advising them where to go (left or right).

Nowadays, no one on the bridge speaks Czech...
