The politics of Singapore takes the form of a parliamentary representative democratic republic whereby the President of Singapore is the head of state, the Prime Minister of Singapore is the head of government, and of a multi-party system.

    Questions spring to mind.

Are kidneys priced on the age of the donor?

In the case of this 64 year old woman can't she get some of the family to generate some income to help out?

At 64 how long can the recipient expect to get in years extra (in life terms) for the investment?

Condoning this practice doesn't seem like a good position to take. Afterall these are fellow human beings...maybe they are the peasant class but I don't think we should us them like lab rats.

Aren't their enough people dying of natural causes that can be harvested for organs?

    But they're not donors.

More countries need to enact opt-out legislation so that there are more.

No. When the government arbitrarily sets a price of something at zero , you get shortages.

Id sell one of my kidneys for a million dollars payable in gold bullion. Do you feel sorry for me too ? I would just retire a little earlier instead of agonizing in the workforce for longer.

Let's make it legal only for first world people then. These are all things that could be negotiated. Nobody is advocating a free for all.

I don't see the problem here.

There are obviously countries where the process is legal and other countries such as India where the practice is already widespread. If a 'westerner' with the money and need for a kidney wants to buy one from a willing seller in another country then what's the problem. It's really no one else's frigging business.

    End of.

Arabs can quite easily get hold of donor organs in places like India.

    That includes hearts.

Can you see a problem here?

Infinum ad absurdum. There should be no international organ trading. All within country and highly regulated

Re: India, in the movie Slumdog Millionaire, the protagonist (as a kid) escaped from a gang who get poor kids & maim them. Apparently, blind kids (or lacking of other parts) get more donations as beggars. I've heard from an Indian friend that this indeed happens in some places.

In PH, 10-15 years ago there was this rumour circulating that people (men & women) would get drugged/ roofied in bars/ clubs. They'd wake up in strange places & would have incisions at one side of their back, indicating that 1 kidney had been harvested.

Are those practices legal & moral? No, because the procedures were done against their will - consent wasn't given. And would it be correct for ppl in richer countries to harvest organs from poorer countries? Some might say it's Darwinian - survival of the fittest, but to me it's just wrong.

Legalizing would maybe only have an effect on the kidney market. How about hearts, etc - or they should be allowed to sell those as well?

The long term solution to the organ shortage is actually simple. Everybody is automatically opted IN to the donor scheme. You can opt out if you wish - but then you cannot benefit from the scheme in the future.
    Concur.

Of course it would not be between countries. But there are middle class Canadians who would sell their kidney to a really rich Canadian but it is illegal.

I'd sell mine for a million bucks.

Sad to say, even if it became legal, there would certainly be rules in place to protect the feeble minded. Your kidneys are just going to have to stay where they are.

If you are somebody whose kidney/kidneys are going to buy the farm in two years and if they receive the kidney and get thirty years then that seems a convincing argument. Actually the answer to the question is a resounding "it depends"

What do lab rats have to do with anything?

"Harvest" yes I'm beginning to find the term disgusting. Another term to brainwash the peasants I suppose.
