Human Rights - 5 Eyes Style

Trial of the century will reveal EXACTLY what Australian soldiers really got up to in Afghanistan

    8 Jun, 2021 20:07

"Ben Roberts-Smith’s defamation case in Sydney has it all – it’s a battle between two media giants, an extension of the culture wars and, crucially, a chance to learn more about Australian forces’ misconduct in Afghanistan. The eyes of Australia are on an important defamation trial which got under way in the Federal Court in Sydney on Monday. The trial, which is to be heard by a judge alone without a jury, has been described in the media as “the defamation case of the century.”

That may be something of an exaggeration, but its outcome will no doubt have serious consequences for the reputation of Australia’s armed forces, the media landscape in the country, and the culture wars more generally.

The plaintiff is Ben Roberts-Smith, a 42-year-old Australian war hero who was awarded the Victoria Cross and the Medal for Gallantry for his military service with the Special Air Service Regiment in Afghanistan between 2006 and 2012.

The Victoria Cross is Australia’s highest military honour and is awarded for “conspicuous bravery in the field.” Roberts-Smith won his for his part in an attack on a Taliban stronghold, and his bravery and courage under fire are not in dispute.

Roberts-Smith is suing The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, and the Canberra Times newspapers over a series of articles in 2018 that accused him of committing six unlawful killings while serving in Afghanistan. The alleged victims include a disabled man and a child. At the time of publication, all three papers were owned by Nine Entertainment.

The defendants have raised a defence of truth, and propose to call Australian soldiers who served with Roberts-Smith in Afghanistan and other witnesses to testify that the plaintiff committed these atrocities.

Understandably, the Roberts-Smith defamation action has attracted a great deal of publicity and commentary. The plaintiff is Australia’s most highly decorated living soldier, and the son of a former Western Australian Supreme Court judge. After leaving the army in 2013, Roberts-Smith became general manager of Seven Queensland, part of Seven West Media in Brisbane – a commercial rival of the media conglomerate that published the articles he has sued on.

Seven West Media is controlled by billionaire media tycoon Kerry Stokes, who is also coincidentally chairman of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra – the national institution established in 1941 to commemorate and honour the members of Australia’s armed forces (living and dead) who participated in wars."

    HR - America:

‘It has to stop’: Canada’s PM Trudeau brands killing of Ontario Muslim family a ‘terrorist attack’

    8 Jun, 2021 16:39

"Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called the hit-and-run deaths of a Muslim family a “terrorist attack” and vowed to combat “Islamophobia.” Police have charged a 20-year-old man with four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after he allegedly carried out a targeted hit-and-run, striking a family of five “because of their Muslim faith” in a “premeditated” act.

A nine-year-old boy survived the attack and remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

This was a terrorist attack, motivated by hatred, in the heart of one of our communities,”
Trudeau said in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

The prime minister added that the government would be taking more action to “dismantle far-right hate groups, like we did with the Proud Boys by adding them to Canada’s terror listing.”

Numerous civil rights activists have called for the killings in Ontario to be classified as a terrorist act, and Canadian Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair has referred to the crime as “horrific act of Islamophobia.”

Trudeau previously addressed the attack, saying “this hate is insidious and despicable” and has “no place in any of our communities.” He added that his administration would continue to combat “Islamophobia.” ....

    Human Rights - EU Style

Germany, exasperated by Hungary’s Mr No, seeks to end individual nations having a veto over EU foreign policy

"The frustrated German foreign minister rages about being held ‘hostage’ by smaller, troublesome countries like Viktor Orban’s. But he needs to remember why the veto exists: for democracy’s sake.
The Germans, we must honestly believe, do try to rein in their exuberance for ensuring order, a treasured national characteristic that when exposed to wary foreigners can sometimes land the unfortunate Deutschlanders in die Scheiße.

But German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, speaking at this year’s conference of Germany’s ambassadors in Berlin (now there’s a hot Zoom ticket), was clearly so incensed that any attempt to deploy such caution went out the window.

As he bemoaned the problems of creating a cohesive European Union foreign strategy when irritating individual states have a veto over policy, he complained:

“We can’t let ourselves be held hostage by the people who hobble European foreign policy with their vetoes. If you do that then sooner or later you are risking the cohesion of Europe. The veto has to go, even if that means we can be outvoted.”

Why is it difficult for you to understand that there are two continents in the Americas . . . North and South.

True . . . but Chile is not America . . . and most South Americans would say they are South American.

Just like there is no one United States . . . because of the United States of Mexico.

    That's a fucking joke.

Quebec has implemented dress codes that restrict the wearing of certain religious symols in the public sphere of the province and our great PM has done shit about it. Trudeau has to learn to put his money where his mouth is.

Thank you for replying on the topic,

Human Rights - 5 Eyes Style

Intended to illustrate Human Rights. As accepted by one particular group whose definition/accepted behaviour unfortunately for many of Earths citizens, they abuse daily.

Posters that attempt to ignore the topic can take their opinions on a countries continental suffix to the Wiki/UN Olympic Committee sites, to continue their off-topic rants.

(Wiki has 4 definitions, 3 of them utilise America for the continent with the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans to their West and East.

"The Olympic flag's[39] five rings represent the five inhabited continents of the combined-America model, excluding Antarctica."

Yes, fuck that "democracy" shit eh?

As promised during the 2018 election campaign, the CAQ government tabled Bill 21 on March 28, 2019, entitled "An Act respecting the laicity of the State". The bill, since made law, bans public workers in positions of "authority" from wearing religious symbols, specifically while they are on duty.

You've posted before that you think OhOh is of Chinese extraction or Chinese living in the west but, judging from his posts about English breakfasts and cheese etc, I'm pretty sure he is British without any family connection to China. I don't know any Asians with a penchant for milky tea and fry ups in greasy spoons!

I've known many like him: dyed in the wool Communists living in cloud cuckoo land. They're happily ensconced in their Notting Hill homes pontificating about the evils of the west and the nirvana of a totalitarian state, but never in a month of Sundays would they dream of giving up their western luxuries for a life with the proles in some grim and grey Chinese town.

The epitome of the champagne socialist.
