"That Russia hasn't been able to take all of Ukraine is a victory for the west and a defeat for Russia".

US Army scraps Abrams tank upgrade, unveils new modernization plan

"WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army is scrapping its current upgrade plans for the Abrams main battle tank and pursuing a more significant modernization effort to increase its mobility and survivability on the battlefield, the service announced in a statement Wednesday.
The Army will end its M1A2 System Enhancement Package version 4 program, and instead develop the M1E3 Abrams focused on challenges the tank is likely to face on the battlefield of 2040 and beyond, the service said. The service was supposed to receive the M1A2 SEPv4 version this past spring.
The SEPv4 will not go into production as planned, Army Under Secretary Gabe Camarillo told Defense News in a Sept. 6 interview at the Defense News Conference in Arlington, Virginia. “We’re essentially going to invest those resources into the [research and] development on this new upgraded Abrams,” he said. “[I]t’s really threat-based, it’s everything that we’re seeing right now, even recently in Ukraine in terms of a native active protection system, lighter weight, more survivability, and of course reduced logistical burdens as well for the Army.”
The Abrams tank “can no longer grow its capabilities without adding weight, and we need to reduce its logistical footprint,” Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean, the Army’s program executive officer for ground combat systems, said in the statement. “The war in Ukraine has highlighted a critical need for integrated protections for soldiers, built from within instead of adding on.”

"The US army canceled planned upgrades to the Abrams tanks, relying on the tank's weight and vulnerability to enemy weapons behind enemy lines, Defense News reported.
Stephen Bryan, a former deputy undersecretary of Defense and a security strategy expert, noted that the Abrams tank can no longer survive on a modern battlefield.
Heavy European tanks and armored vehicles are struggling in the mud and fuel shortage in Ukraine. They are also vulnerable to enemy fire. The German Leopard tank, which was considered better than the Abrams tank, did not perform well, " said Stephen Bryan.
The Russians destroyed about 15 Leopards-and with a variety of weapons, including artillery, rockets, helicopter gunships, and drones.
The Leopard tank, which was billed as the next rescue that would help Ukraine win the war, turned out to be a failure, according to a US military expert.
But the failure of the Leopard tank in Ukraine raises concerns that the Abrams tank may also be vulnerable to Russian attacks, writes Stephen Bryan in his analysis.
Neither the Abrams tank nor the Bars tank are equipped with active protection or reactive armor systems.
The Ukrainian army hastily added reactive armor to some of the Leopard tanks that were delivered in Ukraine, but this is a temporary measure and does not provide full protection from enemy fire.
The Leopard tank is made in "contact" with armor that should be able to deviate from anti-tank weapons, including penetrating cannons, firing enemy tanks or tandem warheads.
However, the Russians managed to destroy the Leopard tanks relatively easily, even those that were installed with first-generation rocket armor, writes an American analyst.
The United States supplies Ukraine with depleted uranium shells for the Abrams tanks expected in the near future, because depleted uranium shells can penetrate every Russian tank.
Russian tanks have so far rarely been exposed to enemy fire, as they use an active defensive approach against the Ukrainian geofanziv.
However, if Russia goes on the offensive, their tanks can be exposed to fire, Abrams tanks.
The effectiveness of the combination of depleted uranium shells and Abrams tanks is still unknown.
However, American tanks, like their "colleagues"- the German "Leopard", still do not have active protection."

NEW DELHI: Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky's advisor Mykhailo Podolyak described Indians and Chinese as having 'weak intellectual potential' on Wednesday.
However, after the Ukrainian foreign ministry disassociated itself from the comment, he took a U-turn.
"What’s wrong with India, China, Turkey and so forth. The problem is that they are not analysing the consequences of their steps, these countries have weak intellectual potential, unfortunately.
Yes, they invest in science. Yes, India has launched a lunar rover presently and is now trekking on the surface of the Moon, but that does not indicate that this country fully comprehends what the modern world is about," said Podolyak.
While India didn’t respond to his comments, the Ukrainian Embassy in Delhi responded by saying that they do not endorse his view.
"These are Podolyak’s personal thoughts. This is not an official position of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the office of the President of Ukraine," said a Ukrainian spokesperson in Delhi.
Meanwhile, a few hours after making the statement in a video interview, Podolyak shared a cryptic message on his Twitter handle accusing Russia of misconstruing his statement.
"Classic Russian propaganda – take it out of context, distort the meaning, scale it up to separate target audiences with conflict provocation.
Of course Turkey, India, China and other regional powers are increasingly and clearly justified in claiming global roles in modern world – and there are all the reasons for this: historical, economic, cultural, scientific and political. And these roles have long been much more extensive than Russia’s.
But the global world is much broader than even the most thoughtful regional national interests.
The global world is based on stability and predictability, on rationality and strategy, on international law and clear rules of the game," he said.
Earlier, Ukraine, after the New Delhi Declaration, had said that 'G20 has nothing to be proud of'.
"G20 adopted a final declaration. We are grateful to the partners who tried to include strong wording in the text. However, in terms of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, G20 has nothing to be proud of," said Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko.
