ISW reporting that Ukraine may be taking a pause in its counteroffensive to reflect on current tactics and possibly reorganise their attacks. They still haven't committed their main task force to the battle.
They probably expected to have achieved more significant progress in one of the probing zones by now.

Also, reports of Russians suffering from a cholera outbreak with no access to good drinking water since thew blew up the dam. That's a bit of a shot in the foot!

It's a brutal war, both sides taking heavy casualties. Neither side can probably sustain the current losses.

Yes, it appears to have been a misinterpretation by ISW following a Ukraine briefing. It appears Ukraine were actually saying that they won't be committing their main force yet and will carry on with their probing activities.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

However, the Russians are still defending well and this is going to be a real slog for a while longer.

More shaping operations to me, I believe that the Ukrainians are trying to get the ruzzians to move as many of their reserve forces forward as they can. From what I am hearing after their first defensive line, there is not much left, so when the Ukrainians commit most of their armored brigades to drive a wedge it will push deep into occupied territory. When the push starts, I would suspect that the GMLRS will start pounding the first ruzzian defensive lines for a sustained period, followed by a large armored push.

That said, it should be noted that the fortifications around Pyatykhatky that were liberated were right in the middle of the most heavily fortified part of the line, yet it was breached and captured wiping a ruzzian battalion and its commander.

In closing, I just want to say there have been lots of other big booms happening as well over the last few days, including some rather massive ammo dumps in southern Kherson oblast that are crucial for supplying the entire southern theater.

Musk weighs in on Ukrainian counter offensive


The Tesla and Twitter owner appeared to agree with an article alleging that Kiev’s attempts to reclaim lost territory are failing.


"Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk has endorsed an article by investor and entrepreneur David Sacks arguing that Ukraine’s military push against Russia is faltering.

On Tuesday, Sacks posted an article on Twitter, claiming “it’s becoming clear that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is failing to achieve any of its originally stated objectives.” Washington’s bet that Kiev would be able to “roll back Russian territorial gains, cut the land bridge to Crimea” and make it engage in negotiations had not paid off, he added.

“On the contrary, a stalemate is more likely, or even that Russia will take more territory and win the war,” the investor stated.

He went on to compare the situation in Ukraine with the US military campaign in Afghanistan, which ended with a chaotic withdrawal of US troops in 2020. “It’s worth recalling that the American public was assured for two decades that we were winning in Afghanistan,” Sacks wrote, adding that any belief that the local military was “standing up” to the Taliban crumbled within just a few weeks.

“Unfortunately, it looks like we’re headed for a similar kind of outcome in Ukraine. The only question is when, and how long Biden will be able to perpetuate a proxy war of choice that could have easily been avoided,” he claimed.

Musk appeared to agree with Sacks’ take on Ukraine, writing on Twitter: “Well said.”

Meanwhile, Sacher pointed to new evidence showing that Moscow and Kiev could have come to an agreement at the very start of the conflict last year, referring to a draft treaty on neutrality and security guarantees for Ukraine shown by Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week.

However, the negotiations on the matter broke down in the spring 2022 after Ukraine accused Russia of committing war crimes, a claim Moscow has vehemently denied. The alleged atrocities were discovered after Russian troops withdrew from areas around Kiev in a “goodwill gesture,” according to Moscow.

Kiev’s troops launched their long-anticipated offensive in early June, but their attacks have failed to gain any ground, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, which last week estimated Ukrainian frontline losses since the start of the push at 7,500. Meanwhile, Putin has claimed that Ukraine has lost up to 30% of its Western-supplied military equipment."

"Weapons provided to Ukraine by the US and its allies have either required fixing or had to be cannibalized for parts, the New York Times reported on Monday. Kiev has also complained that equipment worth hundreds of millions of dollars and bought on contract has not yet been delivered.

As proof, the NYT cited documents provided by Ukrainian officials on condition of anonymity, who are frustrated with the West saying they had enough weapons for an offensive against Russia. The Ukrainian attack, which began earlier this month, has resulted in heavy losses of men and equipment without much to show for it.

Up to 30% of Ukraine’s arsenal is undergoing repairs at any given time, according to the outlet, while a lot of Western equipment arrives “in poor or unusable condition.”

One case in point involved 33 American M109 howitzers donated by Italy. According to Rome, they had been decommissioned years ago, but Ukraine asked for them to be refurbished for use. An American contractor was paid $19.8 million to do the repairs. In January, they delivered 13 of the guns, which arrived “not suitable for combat missions,” according to one Ukrainian document.

“The American company, offering its services, had no prior intention to fulfill its obligations,” Ukraine’s defense procurement director Vladimir Pikuzo complained to the Pentagon in a February 3 letter.

“Every single one of them worked when we delivered them,” Matthew Herring, CEO of the Tampa-based Ultra Defense Corporation, told the Times, blaming Ukrainians for not properly maintaining the self-propelled guns.

There were problems with US Army-supplied equipment as well, according to a report by the Pentagon’s inspector general. Last summer, an Army unit at Kuwait’s Camp Arifjan was ordered to send 29 Humvees to Ukraine, but only three were fit for combat. Contractors worked through late August to repair “transmissions, dead batteries, fluid leaks, broken lights, door latches and seatbelts.” When the cars arrived in Poland, however, 25 of them had “rotten” tires, and it took another month to find enough replacements.

The same unit was supposed to send six of the towed M777 howitzers to Ukraine in March 2022, but they turned out to need “extensive maintenance” first. It took three months to have them repaired and shipped to Poland, but they then needed further repairs, as they were judged “non-mission capable.”

As of December 2022, the Ukrainian government had contracted for more than $800 million of weapons and supplies that “went completely or partly unfulfilled,” the Times reported, citing government documents. The most valuable of the contracts were between the Defense Ministry in Kiev and state-owned weapons companies serving as independent brokers. As of this spring, contracts worth “hundreds of millions of dollars” were still outstanding, however."

Ukraine just had major successes over the last few days, breaking through the heaviest fortified lines and taking territory, they did this with only 4 brigades.

Still 2x tank, 15x mechanized, 1x Jaeger, 2x motorized, 1x marine, 1x air assault and 9x offensive guard brigades to go.

The ruzzians will be spending the next several weeks trying to recover from the largest ammo dump in the southern theater getting blown to bits by storm shadow missiles. As of right now, all the forces in Zaporizhia are getting next to zero resupply of artillery shells. Lets see how long they hold those defensive lines with not new supply of shells and ammo coming into the battlespace.

Biden walks back on Ukraine’s Nato accession

"If only the US President Joe Biden had a time machine as in the post-apocalyptic science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, he should have used that vehicle or device to travel purposely and selectively backward through time all the way to 1999 when it was that the US lost the plot on European security and Russia’s perennial quest for mutual security with Europe.

At that defining moment of the post-cold war era 24 years ago, George Kennan was prophetic to warn the Bill Clinton administration that US-Russia relations would be irreparably damaged if the western alliance expanded to include the former Warsaw Pact countries. His advice was ignored. It is generally accepted today that the war in Ukraine is the culmination of the NATO’s relentless advance to the borders of Russia.

Russia’s 2021 draft titled Agreement on Measures to Ensure the Security of the Russian Federation and Member States of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would require that NATO members commit to no further enlargement of the alliance, including in particular to Ukraine, and the related issues concerning the alliance’s deployments, which impacted Russia’s core security issues.

A second draft addressed to Washington was titled Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Security Guarantees. Taken together, the two drafts represented an opening bid by Moscow for serious negotiations but it led to no engagement since the Biden administration simply stonewalled that the US and Russia cannot cut a deal over the heads of Europeans and Ukrainians!

As the National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan famously said, “nothing about you [Ukraine] without you.” It was a lame excuse, for the Kiev regime installed in power through the US-backed unconstitutional, armed and bloody coup in Ukraine in 2014, was a mere tool of Washington.

The Biden administration thought it was cornering Moscow and setting a bear trap as Russia was damned either way — whether it passively accepted the reality of NATO presence right at its doorstep, or chose to resist through coercive means. When Russia’s special military operation began in February 2022, Strobe Talbott who was the mastermind in the Bill Clinton administration pushing through the doctrine of NATO’s eastward expansion into the former Warsaw Pact territories, tweeted congratulating the Biden Team for cornering the Russians!

Several US analysts triumphantly wrote that Russia was going to be bogged down in a quagmire with dire consequences to the country’s regime and its very existence. The western narrative gained ascendancy for a while. The rest is history.

However, in one of the great turnarounds of history in modern times, Moscow eventually prevailed in the battlefields decisively and irreversibly.

Against such a historical backdrop, Biden’s remark on Saturday that the US is “not going to make it easy” for Ukraine to join the NATO can only be seen as a retrogressive journey into the past. Biden underscored that Ukraine will be required to meet the “same standards” as any other member of the bloc, implying that Ukraine must conform to the so-called Membership Action Plan or MAP, which requires a candidate nation to make military and democratic reforms, with NATO’s advice and assistance, before a determination of membership can be made.

The MAP process can take years. Macedonia took 21 years. Biden’s remark is not only a signal to Kiev but comes at a time when there is a groundswell of opinion within the alliance that Europe and the US must provide Ukraine clear-cut NATO security guarantees, which is important for the future of European security.

In fact, Biden spoke only 4 days after meeting with Jens Stoltenberg, NATO secretary-general, at the White House last Tuesday, where, reportedly, the latter sought to simplify the accession process for Ukraine on the plea that Kiev had already made significant progress toward membership.

What prompted Biden to take a hard line? Poland’s President Andrzej Duda declared, in the run-up to his talks in Paris on June 12 with France’s President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the Weimar Triangle format, that Ukraine would like to have “a very concrete perspective … of joining the North Atlantic Alliance.” Duda hoped that the NATO summit in Vilnius will “send a positive message to Kiev, …that Ukraine’s future membership in NATO is clearly visible.”

Apparently, there was consensus amongst the Weimar Triangle members also that Ukraine should receive security guarantees. Scholz declared: “It is evident that we need something like this, and we need it in a very concrete form.” Macron endorsed, calling for a rapid agreement on “tangible and credible security guarantees.”

Indeed, there have been threatening noises too that if there is no concretisation on Ukraine’s membership in Vilnius, some of the “hardcore” allies may take things into their own hands, and the renegade undertaking – at the national level –- could also include stationing of troops from NATO members in Ukraine.

Now, Biden has ignored these demands from Old and New Europeans. He is confident he can shift the goal post. Maybe, Macron and Scholz are only playing to the gallery? We may never know.

The heart of the matter is that Biden realises that the ongoing Ukrainian offensive is heading for a train crash and the decimation of Kiev’s remaining army. It is uncertain how long Kiev will be able to recruit enough soldiers. The two figures whom Washington had groomed for precisely the sort of Plan B in Kiev that it needs now — commander of the armed forces Gen. Valeri Zaluzhny and spy chief Maj. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov — are out of reckoning, having been put out of action summarily by recent Russian missile strikes.

Don’t rule out an insurrection in Ukraine if war deaths become unsustainable for the society. Biden also sees that there is continuously shrinking approval in America for his war policy, which could possibly endanger his re-election. Biden pointed out to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky during his last visit to Kiev that the funds that Washington could provide were limited. And CIA chief William Burns separately left a message with Zelensky that continued American military assistance beyond July is problematic.

Suffice to say, if Putin’s harsh remarks last week (on Tuesday and Friday) are anything to go by, the Kremlin leadership has zero trust or confidence in Biden or his European allies. Meanwhile, the plain truth is, 90 percent of Ukraine’s resource base lies in regions under Russian control. Which means that the rump state is going to be a huge drain on US resources, while Russia is showing no signs of exhaustion.

Biden has not said anything new. Biden senses that the US lost the proxy war but he must not and cannot admit it. So, in the absence of a time machine, which could have taken him all the way back to 1999 when the NATO’s expansion began unfolding, Biden simply walked back to the default position of the 2008 NATO Summit at Bucharest welcoming Ukraine into the alliance via the MAP route — as if that moment fifteen years ago is now the past and cannot be pulled back to the present. Russia is not going to accept it."

"The European Union's report on Ukraine's application for membership says that Kiev has so far fulfilled two of the seven conditions necessary to start formal negotiations on joining the European Union.

This is reported by Reuters, citing sources in Brussels.

Two senior EU officials who were briefed on the report, which was not made public, said Ukraine had already met two criteria. One of the officials said that this is due to judicial reform and the law on mass media, and added that the report focuses on positive aspects.

"There is progress. The report will be moderately positive. This is not about embellishing reality, but about recognizing progress, for example, there are well-known anti-corruption cases. In particular, in the case of the head of the Supreme Court Knyazev, " said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Other EU conditions include reforms of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and law enforcement agencies, measures to combat money laundering, as well as laws aimed at curbing oligarchs and protecting the rights of national minorities.

A third source, also an EU official familiar with the bloc's recommendations to Ukraine on the rule of law, added:

"As for the reforms, the glass would be half full, we would never take a negative tone towards Ukraine at the moment. Judicial reforms have made some progress, although there are still key ones that need to be implemented. Not everything is satisfactory."

The official noted that Ukraine has appointed new heads of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, as required, although its anti-oligarchic law of 2021 was deemed insufficient.

The report, announced as an interim report ahead of a formal assessment in October, will be sent to the EU's 27 national representatives in Brussels on Wednesday, before being presented at a meeting of European affairs ministers in Stockholm on Thursday.
