Australian Government News ... the ABC

“Every year, January 26 rolls around, and each time the same debate about our national day floods the country’s consciousness — and for some of us it can feel tiringly predictable.
The loud headlines, the hyperbolic commentary, the sense this debate won’t be quickly resolved, or that perhaps some aren’t even looking for resolution.”

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison blasts Cricket Australia over Australia Day change

Scott Morrison has given a big bash to Cricket Australia over its decision to drop Australia Day from official promotions after consulting with Indigenous advisers.

CA’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cricket Advisory Committee recommended the move with three Big Bash League games to be played on January 26.

The prime minister hit out at the sport’s governing body over the decision, which CA argues aims to normalise conversations over the date’s history.

“A bit more focus on cricket and a little less focus on politics would be my message to Cricket Australia,” Mr Morrison told Rockhampton radio 4RO on Thursday.

    “I think that’s pretty ordinary.”

CA will refer to January 26 instead of Australia Day in its material.

Three BBL teams will also wear Indigenous jerseys in matches on or leading up to the day.

A barefoot circle, welcome to country and smoking ceremony will take place before some games.

Australia day was always a good party when I was down under.
The fireworks display on the harbour bridge, probably the best pyrotechnics in the world.

It seems to me that Cricket Australia will be doing precisely that (focussing more on cricket than on politics) by simply referring to the date rather than a poliical occasion.

It's an old Aussie myth . . . add to that the tiny percentage of convict-heritage Aussies . . . next will be dredging up the ANZAC's.

The raising of the British flag in Australia was January 26, 1778 and applied only to NSW - why this should be Australia day is beyond me. Why it upsets people is understandable. It WAS the day that Australia was invaded by the British - fact.

Federation Day is January 1 - why keep the crap about the 26th going every year

Cause it’s been no problem until the political correct brigade jumped on it.

So bogans can drape themselves in flag-adorned clothing and get pissed-up and go around racially abusing the 'Lebs', 'Wogs' and 'Abos'?

Lebs, wogs and abos are celebrating along with all other Australians. Except for the perpetually offended, of course.

Well the perpetually offended certainly do not speak for me- an immigrant. I am both lucky and proud to call myself an Australian. If that's not worth celebrating, I don't know what is.

I've never actually done anything significant in my life, but I've found lots of reasons to be offended, says another white male.

Party on dudes- Australia Day. Feel good about ourselves- through thick and thin, we've bilt a mighty fine country here. Something to be proud of.

Well, millions and millions of Australians from a multiplicity of ethnic backgrounds, are very happy and proud to be Australian, and we celebrate it on Australia day. We don't give a rats arse about the begrudgers.

Firstly, your use of the 'we' is quite funny . . . but why do you whine and whinge so much about what others like or dislike?

I know you love talking about your 'abo mates' and how they laugh at being racially abused - ah, them black fellas, eh . . .

The issue is the date. The date a foreign power invaded another. As I said - Federation Day, the day Australia actually became a nation, is a logical choice but then the professional whiners like you join ranks with the bogan element to bemoan the PC groups of taking something away from you.

Why does it have to be any 'brigade' an why specifically a 'PC' brigade?

It's a fact that a day celebrating an invasion is an annual reminder to the defeated - hardly worth pounding on every year.

Federation Day IS Australia Day. The 26th isn't. I'll repeat:

"The raising of the British flag in Australia was January 26, 1778 and applied only to NSW - why this should be Australia day is beyond me. Why it upsets people is understandable. It WAS the day that Australia "

Ah, the 'edgy' sabang comes out . . .

January 1 - Federation Day is the real Australia Day. The day Australia became a nation, but Aussies are too frightened to accept as it would take away a public holiday
