Part os the reason is what Harrybaracyda said , but big part is the composition of the country and it's geographical location.
As immigration from Europe decreased and immigration from other part of the world increased the original European settlers saw a distinct change in the demographics ,
After WW2 most of the economic system of the world was destroyed, and the US took the slack , creating unparalleled wealth in the US and the mistaken impression by those European early settlers, that it was because they were superior people.
As the rest of the world developed and started claiming their part of the pie, consequently the US part of the pie began to shrink ,
Those early European settlers who mistakenly thought their success was due tp their superiority as human beings also mistakenly attributed their decline to the new immigrants, where it was actually the new immigrants and the brain drain from their country and into the US that had slowed down the decline.
The mostly whites of European decent protesters in Virginia shouted "you shall not replace us" and degenerate in what they thought was clever "jews shalt not replace us"
trump promised them to "Make America Great Again" , Again? what past period was he going to recreate again? was he going to carpet bomb Japan, and Europe, and send China back to the stone age?
Just like Brexit in the UK, trump promised to take them back to a place that does longer not exist. The only way possible is forward, and from the look of the protesters, replacing them would be the best thing that could possibly happen to the USA.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

^ Nice post, but I would remind you Australia has more of it's citizens born elsewhere than any other country besides Switzerland. But our 'original anglo settlers' do not exist in a state of fear and paranoia, or engage in elaborate Rambo cosplay (that's really gay).

Well except maybe for the Somalis- could do with less of them.

When I was writing the above , I thought about that
I think Australians never got too big for their britches, and never developed that sense of exceptionalism. I had the pleasure to meat many Australians and so far I never met one I did not like. All self effacing , fun loving , good sense of humor,
Or perhaps with a belly full of shrimps from the barbie and tired from fighting crocodiles, they just don't give a damn. LOL

The greatest threat to the American way of life is the American way of life.

    ...and certainly not recognized.

Do you mean that Americans are their own worst enemy?

You mean the 'white tribe of Asia' and their attitude working in Asia? Britches way too small.

Good old Pauline. I disagree with many of her more strident views, but she's certainly entertaining and to the point- a more interesting version of Nigel Farage. But she's a has been- her party attracted a paltry amount of votes in the last Qld election (Qld being our version of the deep south). Maybe because in many of the rural communities that formed a large part of her electoral backing (but it was never much really), they are now dumping hundreds of tonnes of fruit & veg because there are no backpackers or recent immigrants to pick them in these Covid times! Be careful what you wish for.

But our livestock is having a great year, being fed all of these exotic crops.

Fear mongering has been and still is a well known and effective tactic in far right political circles for the last century. More recently, the corporatists and fascists can no longer sell their bankrupt economic policy of trickle down economics after the last 40 years of failure, so the only other means to convince voters is through fear and emotional rhetoric, the us against them approach. This idea of divide and rule works on simpletons and ignoramuses who easily fall prey to con men like trump and the Republicans.

The greatest threat to the American way of life ...................................

I think the greatest threat may be the lack of respect people have developed towards one another, and I think this is probably true for most if not all western liberal democracies.

Having spent eight years in Thailand one thing I did notice is that people, and I am generalizing somewhat, respect one another and demonstrate this in a more formal fashion than we have done for many years. Korea is less so but it is still there.

I think this situation is an inevitable consequence of society valuing mammon over all else.

I do believe that the America people are fundamentally a strong and decent people and will in time turn things around.

What it will take to trigger this turnaround I cannot say.
