Top Trump attorney has recused himself from handling Mar-a-Lago case

Attorney Evan Corcoran recused himself from representing former President Donald Trump in the special counsel investigation related to the Mar-a-Lago documents given that he testified for investigators, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

Corcoran’s exit, which was first reported by The Washington Post, was an expected development after special counsel Jack Smith’s office forced him to testify without the shield of attorney-client privilege in front of the grand jury and prosecutors accused Trump of using his attorney to advance a crime.

Despite recusing himself from the Mar-a-Lago probe weeks ago, Corcoran continues to represent Trump on other matters, including the January 6, 2021, investigation. He appeared in court on behalf of the former president for sealed proceedings related to that part of Smith’s probe just days after his testimony in the Mar-a-Lago documents case.

Corcoran could still resume representing Trump in the documents case now that he has testified.

It’s not known how valuable the evidence and testimony he provided to the grand jury will be for prosecutors. He testified twice to the grand jury and turned over documents.

Corcoran’s own defense attorney declined to comment. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said Saturday, “These unnamed sources have no idea what’s actually going on and are peddling disinformation.”

Corcoran had a window into many of the moments in which Trump and his team were responding to the federal government’s efforts to get classified documents back.

He first appeared before the grand jury in January but refused to answer questions that would have divulged his advice to Trump and their conversations, citing attorney-client privilege, a source previously told CNN. Prosecutors were then prompted to take the unusual step of fighting in court to force him to respond, and a federal court ruled prior to his reappearance in front of the grand jury in March that he could not withhold information any longer about communications he’d had with Trump leading up to the search.

Prosecutors sought to ask Corcoran about his direct interactions with Trump regarding a May 2022 subpoena for all classified records in the former president’s possession, the subsequent search for classified records, and about conversations they’d had when the Trump Organization received a separate subpoena for surveillance video of the club.

Corcoran drafted a statement in June that claimed Trump’s team had done a diligent search for boxes and were handing over classified records they found in response to the May subpoena. Then, months later, the FBI found hundreds more pages with classified markings in its search of Mar-a-Lago, a pivotal development in the records mishandling and obstruction of justice probe.

In recent weeks, the grand jury activity, including Corcoran’s forced testimony, has made clear that prosecutors are nailing down evidence from scores of sources that could be used in a case against Trump.

The former president has not been charged with any federal crime. (yet)

Trump motion to declare mistrial in E. Jean Carroll lawsuit denied

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan on Monday denied a motion by former President Donald Trump's lawyers to declare a mistrial in the civil battery and defamation lawsuit against him that was brought by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll.

In a letter filed early Monday, Trump's attorney Joe Tacopina alleged Kaplan had made "pervasive unfair and prejudicial rulings" against the former president.

Carroll is suing the former president, alleging he raped her in the 1990s and then defamed her when she came forward in 2019. Trump has denied the allegations.

Carroll testified last week that "Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he said it didn't happen."

Trump's attorney continues to grill accuser E. Jean Carroll

Donald Trump’s lawyer suggests E. Jean Carroll’s rape claims echo ‘Law & Order SVU’ plot point

Floating a new defense in E. Jean Carroll’s rape case, former President Donald Trump’s attorney suggested on Monday that the writer’s allegations echo a plot point from an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Trump’s lawyer Joseph Tacopina confronted Carroll about those similarities during Carroll’s second day of cross-examination.

During one particularly sharp exchange, Tacopina said Carroll must have known about the details of the episode because of an emailed message from a reader.

    ‘An astonishing coincidence’

That email exchange, submitted into evidence, alerted Carroll to a 2012 episode of the long-running series in which a character shares a fantasy about rape role-play in the lingerie section of a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room.

In the exchange, Carroll replied to the reader: “I’m surprised this sort of plot is not seen more often.”

When asked whether her response showed she’s a fan of the show, Carroll conceded that she’s a fan of “Law & Order” — but not the “Special Victims Unit” series of episodes, which she called too violent.

'He raped you' friend of E. Jean Carroll testifies she said after alleged Trump attack

A friend of writer E. Jean Carroll, testifying Tuesday in Carroll's civil defamation and battery case against former President Donald Trump, said that Carroll called her and described the alleged attack minutes after alleged assault took place.

Carroll, who brought the lawsuit in November, alleges that Trump defamed her in a 2022 Truth Social post by calling her allegations "a Hoax and a lie" and saying "This woman is not my type!" when he denied her claim that Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in the 1990s.

She added a charge of battery under a recently adopted New York law that allows adult survivors of sexual abuse to sue their alleged attacker regardless of the statute of limitations. Trump has denied all allegations that he raped Carroll or defamed her.

Lisa Birnbach, a writer, was the first person Carroll said she told about the alleged attack, "five to seven minutes" after the alleged assault occurred, Birnbach said.

"She told me that Donald Trump recognized her outside or right in the doorway of Bergdorf Goodman, he asked her to help him shop, and assaulted her upstairs in a dressing room," Birnbach testified.

Birnbach testified that she "thought it was kind of nutty" for Carroll to go to the lingerie department with Trump, but she did not think it was dangerous.

"I had just spent a few days with him," Birnbach said of Trump, referring to two days she spent at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate for a Feb. 12, 1996, piece she wrote for New York magazine. "He didn't strike me as dangerous."

Birnbach described the alleged assault as she said Carroll relayed it to her, saying, "He slammed his whole arm, pinned her against the wall with his arm and shoulders and with his free hand pulled down her tights."

"And E. Jean said to me many times, 'He pulled down my tights, he pulled down my tights.' Almost like she couldn't believe it had just happened to her," Birnbach said.

"As soon as she said that, even though I knew my children didn't know the word, I ducked out of the room and I whispered 'E. Jean, he raped you, you should go to the police,'" Birnbach testified.

2nd Trump accuser in E. Jean Carroll case describes alleged 1979 groping

A businesswoman testified Tuesday in E. Jean Carroll's civil defamation and battery case against former President Donald Trump that Trump had groped her during a flight to New York in 1979, in what Carroll's attorneys said showed a pattern of behavior on Trump's part.

Jessica Leeds is one of two women who the court has ruled are allowed to testify about prior alleged assaults by Trump, who is accused by Carroll of defaming the former Elle magazine columnist in a 2022 Truth Social post by calling her allegations "a Hoax and a lie" and saying "This woman is not my type!" when he denied her claim that Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in the 1990s.

She added a charge of battery under a recently adopted New York law that allows adult survivors of sexual abuse to sue their alleged attacker regardless of the statute of limitations. Trump has denied all allegations that he raped Carroll or defamed her.

Leeds, who first made her allegations to The New York Times just before the 2016 presidential election, testified that she was on a flight to New York when she was bumped up to first class from her coach seat and wound up next to Trump.

"When I got up there and sat down, the gentleman sitting by the window introduced himself as Donald Trump. We shook hands," Leeds, who was 37 at the time, testified. "What happened was, they served a meal. And it was cleared and we were sitting there, when all of a sudden Trump decided to kiss me and grope me."

She said there was no conversation -- "It was out of the blue."

Leeds described the alleged encounter "like a tussle," saying, "He was trying to kiss me. He was trying to pull me towards him. He was grabbing my breasts. It was like he had 40 million hands."

"It was when he started putting his hand up my skirt, that gave me a jolt of strength," testified Leeds, who said she freed herself and went "storming back to my seat in the back of coach."

Leeds, like Carroll, did not scream or yell during the alleged encounter.

"It never occurred to me to yell out," Leeds said. When asked "Why not?" by Carroll's attorney, she said, "I don't know."

Leeds recalled waiting until every other passenger had deplaned before she left, because she didn't want to risk running into Trump again. She said she told no one about the alleged incident.

"I did not tell anybody at work because I didn't think they would be interested in my experience," Leeds said. "At that time and that place, in the work environment, men could basically get away with a lot."

Leeds said she only revealed what allegedly happened to her when Trump started running for president.

"I started off telling my family, telling my children, telling my friends, my neighbors, my book club, anyone and everyone who would listen to me," Leeds said. "I thought he was not the kind of person we wanted as president."

Trump rape accuser E. Jean Carroll 'didn't blame the store,' psychologist testifies

Former Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll continued to shop at Bergdorf Goodman, the Manhattan department store where she claimed Donald Trump raped her, because "she didn't feel that Bergdorf Goodman raped her," a psychologist testified Wednesday in Carroll's civil defamation and battery case against the former president.

Carroll, who brought the lawsuit in November, alleges that Trump defamed her in a 2022 Truth Social post by calling her allegations "a Hoax and a lie" and saying "This woman is not my type!" when he denied her claim that Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the 1990s.

She added a charge of battery under a recently adopted New York law that allows adult survivors of sexual abuse to sue their alleged attacker regardless of the statute of limitations. Trump has denied all allegations that he raped Carroll or defamed her.

"She didn't blame the store. She blamed herself," said Dr. Leslie Lebowitz, who evaluated Carroll for the case.

The defense suggested the fact that Carroll continued to shop at Bergdorf's, saved the dress she wore the evening of the alleged assault, and watched Trump's reality television show, "The Apprentice," were behaviors out of step with the deep trauma Carroll said she suffered.

Lebowitz pushed back against the inference from the defense that Carroll's rape claim against Trump could not be true because she did not act like it actually happened.

"I think anywhere Ms. Carroll could see evidence that she was negatively affected by what happened, she would fight against it. So to not go back into Bergdorf's would have been really obvious, given how much she loved that store," Lebowitz said.

The same holds true for the dress, Lebowitz said.

"I think that she loves clothes and that was the most expensive dress she'd ever brought," Lebowitz said. "It would have been impossible to avoid the realization that she was that negatively affected."

As for watching "The Apprentice," Lebowitz said there was excitement about the show in Carroll's professional and social circles. To not watch would have forced her to reveal why.

On cross-examination, defense attorney Chad Seigel asked Lebowitz if her diagnosis concluded that Carroll had been raped.

"You're not offering an opinion in this case whether Ms. Carroll was raped?" Seigel asked.

    "I'm not," Lebowitz replied.

Lebowitz said that Carroll did meet some of the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder, including exhibiting signs of memories affected by trauma. She described a moment during her evaluation when Carroll "began to squirm in her seat" because she appeared to be "re-experiencing" elements of the alleged assault.

She also told the jury that rape victims commonly experience self-blame.

Trump has no witnesses at E. Jean Carroll rape defamation trial

Trump lawyers will not offer witnesses at E. Jean Carroll rape defamation trial

A lawyer for former President Donald Trump said Wednesday said he will not present any witnesses at his civil trial for a lawsuit accusing him of raping the writer E. Jean Carroll in the mid-1990s and defaming her last fall when he again denied her claim.

Trump’s attorney Joseph Tacopina told Judge Lewis Kaplan that the one expert witness he planned to call to the witness stand is unable to testify due to a health issue.

On Tuesday, Tacopina said the 76-year-old Trump would not testify before the jury in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Trump has not appeared in that court since the trial began last week.

But the presumptive frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination was in Scotland on Monday to break ground for a new golf course.

A videotape of Trump’s deposition for the case might be played later Wednesday for jurors.

That tape includes footage from the so-called “Access Hollywood” tape, in which Trump bragged to that show’s then-host Billy Bush about groping and kissing women without their consent.

“I’m automatically attracted to beautiful women — I just start kissing them, it’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait,” Trump says on that tape, recorded in 2005 when he was taping a segment of the television show “Access Hollywood.”

“And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. “Grab ’em by the p----,” Trump said.

Carroll’s sister, Cande Carroll, was due to take the witness stand, followed by Natasha Stoynoff, who claims Trump assaulted her at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, in 2005.

Kaplan told jurors Wednesday that they will start deliberations in the case next week.

Carroll’s lawyers expect to rest their case on Thursday.

    ________

3rd accuser testifies Trump started 'kissing me' during 2005 visit to Mar-a-Lago

A former People magazine writer, testifying in E. Jean Carroll's defamation and battery case against former President Donald Trump, told the jury that Trump pushed her against a wall and began kissing her while she was visiting his Mar-a-Lago estate on assignment in 2005.

Former People writer Natasha Stoynoff told the jury she was at Mar-a-Lago in late 2005 to write an article on Donald and Melania Trump's first wedding anniversary, when Trump asked to show her a room in the estate.

"I followed him and we went in through these back doors and down the hall and turned right into a room," Stoynoff said. "I'm looking around, I'm thinking, 'Wow, really nice room,' wondering what he wants to show me, and I hear the door shut behind me."

Stoynoff said she had interviewed Trump on a number of occasions as part of her assignment on the "Trump beat" for People. She testified that Trump asked her into the room while Melania was changing clothes in preparation for their interview outside.

"By the time I turn around, he has my hands on my shoulders and he pushes me against the wall and he starts kissing me," Stoynoff testified. She said that she tried to shove him away.

"He came toward me again and I tried to shove him again," Stoynoff said. "He was kissing me and he was against me, holding my shoulder back."

She testified that she said no words.

"I couldn't. I tried. I was just flustered and shocked. No words came out of me," Stoynoff told the jury.

"Did you tell him to stop?" Carroll's attorney, Michael Ferrara, asked. "I couldn't," Stoynoff answered. She said the encounter ended when a butler entered the room.

Stoynoff described herself as "ashamed and humiliated at what had happened," and testified said nothing about it to her bosses at People because she didn't want to cause trouble at the magazine.

She said she first decided to tell her story after she saw the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape that surfaced during the 2016 presidential campaign, on which Trump is overheard boasting to then-host Billy Bush about grabbing and kissing women without consent.

    E. Jean Carroll rests case in civil trial after jurors see video of Trump confusing her with his ex-wife

Jury in civil rape trial see video of Trump confusing E. Jean Carroll with his ex-wife

Jurors hearing E. Jean Carroll's civil suit against Donald Trump on Thursday were shown a deposition video of the former president confusing the accuser with his ex-wife Marla Maples.

"It's Marla," Trump said during a deposition for the case when shown a picture of him, Carroll and Carroll's ex-husband in the 1980s. "That's Marla, yeah. That's my wife," Trump continued before being corrected by his lawyer, Alina Habba. "No, that's Carroll," Habba said.

Trump then responded the photo was "very blurry."

The video is likely all that jurors will see of the former president — Trump's lawyers said Wednesday that he will not testify in the case.

    E. Jean Carroll expert estimates $2.7M in Trump defamation

    E. Jean Carroll’s case rests after expert reveals defamation damages number in Trump civil rape trial: up to $2.7 million

For the first time in years of litigation, E. Jean Carroll’s legal team finally released an estimate of what they will ask a jury to award their client in defamation damages if they find former President Donald Trump raped her and lied about it: up to $2.7 million.

That figure was calculated by Ashley Humphreys, a professor from Northwestern University’s prestigious Medill journalism school.

Humphreys put that number on the high end of the spectrum for Carroll’s reputational damages from Trump’s Truth Social post panning her accusations as a “hoax” and a “lie.” Humphreys’s lower estimate for Carroll’s reputational damages is $368,183.78.

That is far from the total universe of civil damages Trump may be held liable for if a jury finds in Carroll’s favor.

Former federal prosecutor Mitchell Epner, who now practices media law as a partner of Rottenberg Lipman Rich PC, emphasized that many other categories remain unresolved.

“The testimony from Prof. Humphreys was only defamation damages, what it would cost to buy as much publicity as the Trump statements received,” Epner told Law&Crime. “That does not include any damages for the alleged rape or damages for loss of income due to the adverse publicity.”

Carroll also seeks punitive and exemplary damages, as well as “pre-and post-judgment interest, costs, and such other and further relief.”

Witness testimony ended on Thursday with Carroll’s former boss Roberta Meyers, the editor-in-chief of the Elle brand. Meyers told jurors that Carroll was beloved by her readers — and never told her about her rape allegations against Trump. The ex-Elle chief said that she learned about those claims when the rest of the world did, in an excerpt in New York Magazine.

With her testimony, Carroll and Trump rested their cases. Senior U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan gave Trump an opportunity to request reopening his case if he wants to testify by filing such a request by Sunday at 5 p.m. ET.

Trump says he will ‘probably attend’ E. Jean Carroll trial to ‘confront this’

Former President Trump said Thursday he will “probably attend” the ongoing civil trial in Manhattan over writer E. Jean Carroll’s rape allegations to “confront this.”

“I have to leave Ireland and I have to leave Scotland, where I have great properties,” Trump told reporters from a golf course in Ireland. “I have to leave early. I don’t have to, but I choose to.”

“It’s a disgrace that it’s allowed to happen,” he added. “It’s false accusations against a rich guy, or in my case, against a famous, rich and political person that’s leading the polls by 40 points.”

“I have to go back for a woman that made a false accusation about me, and I have a judge who is extremely hostile,” Trump continued. “And I’m going to go back, and I’m going to confront this. This woman is a disgrace, and it shouldn’t be allowed to happen in our country.”

DOJ finds ‘insider witness’ in Trump Mar-a-Lago documents probe: report

The Justice Department has found an “insider witness” as investigators probe former President Trump’s handling of classified documents, according to a new report.

The New York Times, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the unidentified person now cooperating confidentially with the investigation has worked for Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

According to the report, the scope of the insider witness’s cooperation is not yet clear, nor is the timeline, but the witness reportedly gave investigators a picture of the storage room where some materials were held.

The investigation, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, has shown signs of intensifying. The new insider witness, the Times reports, appears as part of a broader effort to figure out whether Trump personally ordered boxes of the sensitive material to be moved out of the storage room.

Investigators are looking into whether Trump failed or refused to comply with government requests for certain records to be returned after the end of his presidency, as is required under the Presidential Records Act.

After the DOJ subpoenaed Trump for the documents believed to still be in his possession, FBI agents executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago and recovered classified documents last summer.

The Times also reported that “nearly everyone” who works at Mar-a-Lago has been subpoenaed in the probe.

The inquiry into Trump’s document handling is one of two probes into the former president led by Smith. The second investigation focuses on efforts by Trump and his allies to interfere with the transfer of power after losing his reelection bid in 2020.

Behind scenes, Trump’s lawyer disavowed client’s claim he’d ‘confront’ E. Jean Carroll to judge: ‘You understand what I am dealing with’

Hours after former President Donald Trump told reporters in Ireland that he’d fly back to New York to “confront” E. Jean Carroll in her civil rape and defamation case against him, his attorney emphatically denied to a federal judge that his client would testify.

“I know you understand what I am dealing with,” Trump’s attorney Joe Tacopina told Senior U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan during a sidebar conference on Thursday.

    • At least eight fake Georgia electors get immunity deals in Trump probe: report

At least eight of the 16 fake Georgia electors who planned to declare former President Trump the winner of the state in 2020 despite his loss have received immunity deals in the investigation into efforts to overturn the results of the state’s election.

The Washington Post reported on Friday that prosecutors working for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis told the eight people they will not face any charges related to her probe if they cooperate and testify about the efforts from Trump and his allies to overturn President Biden’s victory in the state.

A brief filed in Fulton County Superior Court on Friday by the eight electors’ defense attorney Kimberly Bourroughs Debrow, which the Post obtained, says the eight people did not promise they would provide incriminating evidence in return for immunity, and they have maintained their innocence.

An individual familiar with the investigation told the Post the eight electors “continue to say they have done nothing wrong, and they are not aware of anyone else doing anything wrong, much less criminal.”

Willis said last month she planned to announce any indictments stemming from her investigation between July 11 and Sept. 1, adding that she expected the announcement to stir up “significant public reaction.”

The 16 fake electors who planned to declare Trump the winner in Georgia and former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani were informed they were targets of the investigation.

In the filing, Debrow pushes back against a request from Willis that she be disqualified from further participating in the case based on an accusation that she did not tell her clients about an offer of immunity and an alleged conflict of interest.

Willis argued that some of the electors incriminated other electors Debrow represents, creating a conflict.

Debrow denied the accusations in the filing, noting a letter she sent to her clients in August in which she discussed possible immunity offers. She argued that because her eight clients have immunity, they could not incriminate each other.

She also said her review of audio recordings and transcripts from her clients’ interviews with prosecutors revealed no evidence of anyone being implicated.

The Post reported Willis said in a filing last month that she believed some — but not all — electors broke the law. Those involved in planning and managing the meeting of fake electors appear to still be targets, according to the outlet.

Closing arguments in E. Jean Carroll's lawsuit accusing Trump of rape

Attorneys for the writer E. Jean Carroll and former President Donald Trump began on Monday to make their closing arguments, following seven days of testimony from witnesses for Carroll, who says Trump raped her decades ago.

"Donald Trump has an M.O.," and that is targeting women in "semi-public" places and "grabbing" their genitals, an attorney for Carroll said Monday during closing arguments in the civil defamation and battery trial.

Attorneys for Trump did not call any witnesses and he did not testify in the trial.

Jury Hears Closing Arguments In Trump Rape Case

    _______

All the witnesses who testified in Donald Trump’s rape trial

11 witnesses testified in Donald Trump’s rape trial. Here’s what they said.

    E. Jean Carroll and Donald Trump rested their cases Thursday in the civil trial in which Carroll accused Trump of raping her decades ago.

She is suing him in Manhattan federal court for battery over the alleged rape, and for defamation over social media comments Trump made last year accusing Carroll of promoting a “hoax.” He maintains the alleged incident “never happened.”

    E. Jean Carroll - Over the course of three days, Carroll testified in detail about her account of the alleged rape, her response at the time, and her behavior in the decades since. She said Trump raped her in a dressing room in the lingerie department on the sixth floor of Bergdorf Goodman. She said she believed the attack occurred on a Thursday evening in the spring of 1996, but that she wasn’t certain of the timing. And she said she told two friends right away but never told anyone else until 2019, when the “Me Too” movement inspired her to publicize her account.

Lisa Birnbach - She testified that Carroll called her in the early evening one spring night in 1996 and told her that she had just left Bergdorf, where she had encountered Trump, who assaulted her in a dressing room, pulling down her tights and penetrating her with his penis. Birnbach said she told Carroll that Trump had raped her and advised her to report the incident to the police.

Carol Martin - According to Martin, Carroll came to her a day or two after the alleged incident and told her about it. “She said, ‘Trump attacked me,’” Martin said, recalling that Carroll was visibly upset. “I was completely floored,” Martin said. She said she cautioned Carroll against taking any steps in response to the incident “because it was Donald Trump and he had a lot of attorneys and he would bury her.”

Jessica Leeds - She testified that in the late 1970s, she randomly encountered Trump on an airplane when the two were seated next to each other. According to Leeds, Trump sexually assaulted her during the flight, groping her breasts and attempting to put his hand up her skirt.

Natasha Stoynoff - She testified that in 2005 she traveled to Mar-a-Lago to write a story about the upcoming one-year wedding anniversary of Trump and his wife, Melania. Finding herself alone in a room with Trump, Stoynoff said, he pushed her against a wall and started kissing her without her consent.

Cande Carroll - Cande Carroll testified that she and her sister rarely spoke to their parents about negative experiences and that their parents regularly encouraged them to present themselves publicly “with a positive attitude.” Cande also said she and her sister “never” spoke to each other about personal problems while they were growing up. She learned about the alleged rape, she said, by reading an excerpt of E. Jean’s book that was published in New York Magazine. Asked why it didn’t surprise her that her sister hadn’t told her about the incident earlier, she said: “She just wouldn’t have. We didn’t talk about those things.”

Leslie Lebowitz - She said Carroll suffers from several psychological conditions attributable to the alleged rape, including “a diminishment in her ability to feel positive about herself” and “avoidant behaviors which have led to her inability to maintain a romantic life.”

Ashlee Humphreys - She testified that the cost of repairing Carroll’s reputation due to the remarks Trump made about her would be up to $2.76 million.

Roberta Myers - She oversaw Elle for many of the years during which Carroll’s advice column appeared in the magazine. She testified that Carroll was “very important to the brand” and that her column was hugely popular.

Missing two are in the link.

No doubt the sleazebag did it but doubt the jury will rule for Carroll. Even if they do sure an appeal will follow.

Appeals need to have a reason. I'm guessing that's why orangedude said he needed to fly back from Britland to NY to testify, hoping the judge wouldn't allow him time to do that. Unfortunately for trump, the judge called his bluff.

The damage will have already been done.

I am waiting for a moderator at one of the presidential debates to ask all the presidential candidates on stage one question........

Moderator: Do you think America is ready for a convicted rapist for president?

    less than 3 hours.

    A verdict has been reached

Jurors have reached a verdict in the lawsuit accusing former President Donald Trump of raping writer E. Jean Carroll - The San Diego Union-Tribune

    edit

trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll

    no rape charges

    damages – 5,020,000.00 (+/-)

Trump ordered to pay $5M for sexual abuse of E. Jean Carroll

Donald Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll, civil jury finds in unanimous verdict — awards her $5 million total

A New York civil jury determined that former President Donald Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman in the 1990s and later defamed her when denying the allegations. The jury determined Carroll should receive $5 million from Trump.

The verdict followed fewer than three hours of deliberations.

Carroll spent three days on the witness stand and called 10 other witnesses in service of her account that Trump sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman in the mid-1990s. She told jurors that Trump penetrated her with his fingers and his penis, stating flatly: “He raped me.” She said that she told two of her friends, writer Lisa Birnbach and local TV anchor Carol Martin, almost immediately. Both testified in Carroll’s support, as did two other women who accused the former president of sexual misconduct.

Trump did not present a defense case and declined repeated opportunities to testify. He claimed he wasn’t there.

In a speedy verdict, jurors resoundingly embraced Carroll’s core claim, even if they rejected the allegation that the encounter constituted rape. Jurors chose a more expansive option on the verdict form: sexual abuse.

Trump found liable for sexual battery

    Damages broken down

For the battery count, the jury ordered Trump to pay $2 million and an additional $20,000 in punitive damages.

In connection with the defamation count, jurors ordered Trump to pay $2.7 million plus an additional $280,000 in punitive damages, a total sum of $5 million.

Well judging by the lack of a rape conviction, he couldn't slip in.

Three hours of deliberation and a unanimous verdict. That jury had six men on it, IIRC. I wasn't sure they'd arrive at this, which looks like the right decision.

What I fail to see is that she was attacked in mid-1990s. She told a couple of friends at the time and that was it. Then 20 odd years later she raises the matter. Quite odd really as I'd have thought she'd have screamed rape when it happened? Being as she could have provide his sperm as evidence.
