Amusing to see the deflection and desperation on here to defend a man who is obviously incompetent and severely mentally impaired. Biden is far too ill to run again in November, better to talk about his replacement than to continually sneer at Trump while making excuses for sad Biden who has senile dementia.

Alexander Smirnov, the former FBI informant who is charged with lying to the FBI about the Biden family, will remain in jail until his trial, a federal judge ruled Monday.

U.S. District Judge Otis D. Wright II hastily called the Monday hearing after Smirnov was rearrested last week following his release by a Las Vegas magistrate judge. Wright said the dual American and Israeli citizen has a concerning habit of making false statements and could be a flight risk if released on bail.

Smirnov, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, was shackled in a prison jumpsuit for the court appearance and was accompanied by four lawyers. He wore glasses, and his lawyers said he suffers from an eye condition that requires significant medical care and surgery. His attorneys said the condition was a reason for him to remain out of jail. They noted that he is being held in isolation because of the high-profile nature of his case.

Federal prosecutors indicted Smirnov on Feb. 14 for falsely telling the FBI that executives for a Ukrainian energy company had paid bribes to President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The bribery claim became a central part of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry of the president.

The charges against Smirnov were brought by special counsel David Weiss, who has led a long-running investigation of Hunter Biden and has charged the president’s son with gun and tax crimes.

Prosecutors warned that Smirnov’s self-described ties to Russian intelligence put him at high risk of fleeing if he were not kept in jail while awaiting trial. His lawyers said FBI and Defense Department officials urged him to make contacts with foreign government officials in his role as a government informant — and that the existence of those relationships shouldn’t justify his detention.

But Wright was unconvinced, questioning whether all Smirnov’s foreign ties resulted from his government work. His defense lawyers conceded that they did not.

Special counsel Jack Smith said Monday that President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents — which earned him a scolding from special counsel Robert Hur — is not “remotely” similar to the “deceitful criminal conduct” of Donald Trump.

In a 12-page filing countering Trump’s claim that he’s been selectively prosecuted by attorneys loyal to the Biden administration, Smith’s team rejected Trump’s effort to compare the former president’s conduct to Biden’s. In fact, Hur’s report underscored why Trump is facing criminal charges and Biden is not, they noted.

“The defendants have not identified anyone who has engaged in a remotely similar suite of willful and deceitful criminal conduct and not been prosecuted. Nor could they,” assistant special counsel David Harbach wrote.

“Trump, unlike Biden, is alleged to have engaged in extensive and repeated efforts to obstruct justice and thwart the return of documents bearing classification markings,” Harbach added. “And the evidence concerning the two men’s intent — whether they knowingly possessed and willfully retained such documents — is also starkly different.”

Trump is fighting criminal charges for hoarding classified secrets at his Mar-a-Lago estate after leaving office, and then allegedly resisting efforts by the National Archives and Justice Department to recover them. Harbach emphasized that the volume and sensitivity of the records kept by Trump stood in stark contrast to other examples of mishandling of classified records that have been resolved without criminal charges.

“There has never been a case in American history in which a former official has engaged in conduct remotely similar to Trump’s,” he wrote.

It was the first time Smith has raised Hur’s findings in a court filing. Earlier this month, Hur delivered a blistering assessment of Biden’s handling of classified materials over his 40-year career in office, and he included a stinging assessment of Biden’s age and memory that the president’s defenders have described as a gratuitous political attack, particularly in a report that recommended no criminal charges.

Biden has repeatedly emphasized that his own lawyers proactively informed the Justice Department when they discovered classified material at his residence in Delaware, permitted searches of his residences and actively cooperated with investigators. Trump, meanwhile, is charged with seeking to mislead the Justice Department — and even his own lawyer — about the documents he held at Mar-a-Lago.

President Joe Biden has joked to aides that the key to a long and lasting marriage is “good sex,” according to a new book about the nation’s first ladies, that casts a spotlight on his 47-year romance with Jill Biden.

“American Woman – The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden,” was authored by New York Times White House correspondent Katie Rogers and comes out this week.

The part about sex takes up only a few paragraphs in the 276-page book but has already generated headlines.

Rogers writes that Biden opted against running for president in 2004, a decision punctuated to aides when Jill Biden entered the room wearing a halter top with the word “NO” scrawled on her stomach.

Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Selma, Alabama, on Sunday to commemorate the 59th anniversary of a landmark civil rights moment.

Harris will speak as part of the annual remembrance of “Bloody Sunday,” on the bridge where, on March 7, 1965, white state troopers attacked Black voting rights marchers attempting to cross.

The images of violence at the Edmund Pettus Bridge — originally named for a Confederate general — shocked the nation and helped galvanize support for passage of the Voting Rights Act, which struck down impediments to voting by African-Americans and ended all-white rule in the American South.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced Harris’ upcoming visit during a briefing with reporters on Tuesday. Harris attended the remembrance in 2022, and President Joe Biden visited last year. Both used their past speeches to stress the importance of voting rights and decry what they called Republican-led efforts to undermine them.

The annual commemoration has become a regular stop for politicians to pay homage to the fight for voting rights in America and to court Black voters in election years.

During the 2020 election, Biden spoke at Selma’s historic Brown Chapel AME Church hours after strong support from Black voters in South Carolina lifted Biden to his first primary victory. He also visited the city as vice president in 2013.

President Barack Obama in 2015 spoke in Selma to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1965 marches.

As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced more than $366 million for 17 projects across 20 states and 30 Tribal Nations and communities to accelerate clean energy deployment in rural and remote areas across the country. This funding—made possible by the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—will support a variety of community-driven energy projects in rural and remote regions, such as building microgrids for community health centers to ensure electricity for critical life-saving equipment or constructing a new hydroelectric facility on Tribal lands to improve access to reliable, affordable energy. Today’s announcement underscores the Biden-Harris Administration’s deep commitment to building an inclusive and equitable clean energy future that creates safer, more resilient communities, enhances Tribal energy sovereignty, strengthens energy security, and delivers new economic opportunities in every pocket of the nation.

“President Biden firmly believes that every community should benefit from the nation’s historic transition to a clean energy future, especially those in rural and remote areas,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Thanks to the President's Investing in America agenda, DOE is helping revitalize communities across America—ensuring thriving businesses, reliable access to clean energy, and exciting new economic opportunities, now and for generations to come."

In line with President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative to advance energy and environmental justice, all 17 selected projects are located in or adjacent to disadvantaged communities that are disproportionally overburdened by pollution and historically underserved. Rural and remote communities face a unique set of energy challenges due to their smaller populations and isolation from larger electrical systems, including higher electric bills, unreliable energy supplies, and/or no access to electricity at all. For example, 21% of Navajo Nation homes and 35% of Hopi Indian Tribe homes remain unelectrified, according to a 2023 report by DOE’s Office of Indian Energy. Of the electrified homes within Tribal communities, 31% reported monthly outages. Of the nation’s 350 persistently poor counties, 300 are rural. Low-income residents consistently face an “energy burden”, or percentage of household income spent on energy bills, that is three times higher than other households.

Accelerating Clean Energy Deployment in Rural and Remote Communities
The projects announced today are part of DOE’s Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas (ERA) program, which is managed by the DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). The ERA program leverages DOE’s expertise in resilient energy solutions while recognizing the unique environmental, cultural, and economic landscapes of rural and remote communities. The selected projects cover a range of clean energy technologies, from solar, battery storage systems and microgrids to hydropower, heat pumps, biomass, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

At least 12 projects will support Tribal communities, such as the Navajo and Hopi Nations, who plan to install solar and battery energy storage systems to provide electricity for 300 homes. Another project expects its proposed Tribal clean energy projects to save each Taos Pueblo household in its service area $700 per year, highlighting the cost-savings benefits that come with the transition to a clean energy future.

Examples of projects selected for award negotiation include: listed in the link above

Rep. James Comer (R-KY) tried to distance himself from the FBI on Tuesday morning, telling Fox’s Maria Bartiromo that every exchange he’s had with the agency has been “suspicious.”

His comments came after he’s credited the FBI for months with providing “key evidence” in his push to impeach President Joe Biden.

“Everything I’ve had to do with the FBI has been very suspicious throughout this investigation,” the Oversight Committee chairman told Bartiromo on Tuesday’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo. “The trust level that I have with the FBI is zero, Maria. We’re following the money. [Alexander] Smirnov never was a key part of this investigation,” he said, referring to the informant who was recently indicted for lying about Biden’s dealings in Ukraine.

Comer’s latest remarks contradict what his own committee labeled the memorandum Smirnov provided the FBI that contained the false claim that Biden was involved in a bribery scheme with his son Hunter and the Ukrainian company Burisma. The FBI memo documenting Smirnov’s claims, known as a Form 1023, was released by the bureau after intense pressure by GOP lawmakers last year, making its way to the House Oversight Committee website’s page on the “Biden Family Investigation.”

The website included a link to an X post by the Oversight Committee with the document, filed under “Key Evidence,” to support the committee’s claim. Comer had also called the document “very crucial” to the committee’s investigation months before the FBI released the document.

Both the tweet and the website’s reference to it were removed following Smirnov’s arrest.

    It's actually quite pitiful.

The bottom line is that corporations get to decide who they support - no-one is running for president without a gazillion dollars - and they're happy to throw their money at a couple of candidates who should be in an old folks home.

Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper on Sunday framed the 2024 presidential election as a “stark choice” between President Biden and former President Trump.

In an interview on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” Cooper said Trump’s strong performance in the South Carolina primary on Saturday should make clear to voters they should expect a rematch in the general election.

“This is going to be a Biden-Trump rematch. And I don’t think a lot of people have wrapped their minds around that. But the choice is going to be, that do you want a president who wakes up every morning thinking about the American people? Or do you want a president who wakes up every morning thinking about himself? And that is going to be the stark choice,” Cooper said.

“But you see from last night that Donald Trump has an iron grip on this Republican Party,” Cooper said about the South Carolina primary results. “And there is going to be a stark choice in November.”

Trump won the Republican primary on Saturday by more than 20 points — 59.8 percent of voters supported Trump, while 39.5 percent supported his primary opponent, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, according to Decision Desk HQ’s election results tracker.

While the South Carolina electorate has long been among Trump’s most loyal support bases, Haley had hoped to find some momentum among voters who helped launch her political career.

Cooper pointed to the election results, urging Democrats to anticipate a head-to-head rematch between Biden and Trump and remind voters of Biden’s policy achievements at the start of his term.

“Joe Biden’s experience, he did more his first two years than most presidents could hope to do in two terms. Almost 15 million jobs in the first two years … Fighting prescription drug costs. We’re seeing inflation coming down now,” he said.

“And what we need to do as Democrats is to let the American people know about these things, make sure that they understand why their high-speed internet is going to get connected, why the water system in rural Sampson County, North Carolina — a community that had been forgotten — now people with tears running down their cheeks are finally going to get clean water and not have to boil it. How almost 600,000 people in North Carolina are going to get health care now because we’ve expanded Medicaid in North Carolina and got a Republican legislature to do it,” Cooper added.

“Those are the things that are so exciting that are going to matter to everyday people. And I don’t think everyday people are talking about what we’re talking about, not talking about the politics of this, and aren’t really aware of it, I don’t think. Many of them aren’t.”

Joe Biden's doctor says he is "fit for duty" and "no new concerns" have been identified after the US president's annual medical examination.

Mr Biden, whose health has been under scrutiny ahead of November's presidential election, underwent the assessment on Wednesday.

White House physician Dr Kevin O'Connor said that Mr Biden "fully executes all of his responsibilities without any exemptions or accommodations".

    "Everything's great," Mr Biden said.

The 81-year-old president received the physical at a military hospital in Maryland and declared himself "squared away" after the appointment.

He said the results were "nothing different than last year" and quipped that the doctors "think I look too young".

Mr Biden, whose last physical was in February 2023, is "healthy" and "vigorous" and "continues to work out at least five days per week", according to his doctor. In a memo, Dr O'Connor noted the president continued to be treated for atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) which he takes a blood thinner for, as well as gastroesophageal reflux and hyperlipidemia. Gastroesophageal reflux causes Mr Biden to have to clear his throat frequently.

Mr Biden last summer began using a continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, machine at night to tackle sleep apnea, the report noted. The physician also found that the president suffers from a stiffened gait but it did not worsen from his last examination, besides "possibly tighter hamstrings and calves". An "extremely detailed neurologic exam" found no evidence of a stroke or Parkinson's. Mr Biden also underwent a routine skin cancer surveillance. The president "had several localised, non-melanoma skin cancers removed" before the start of his term in office, the memo added.

The president's health was thrust further into the spotlight earlier this month after a special counsel investigating Mr Biden for improperly storing classified documents suggested he was suffering from mental decline due to his age.

The 345-page report described him as "a sympathetic, well meaning, elderly man with a poor memory".

"My memory is fine," Mr Biden said in response. "I am well-meaning. And am elderly. I know what the hell I'm doing. I put this country back on its feet."

FACT SHEET: President Biden’s Actions to Fight Crime and Make Our Communities Safer

    _________

President Biden pushed back Wednesday against Republican claims of a country gripped by a surge in violent crime, pointing to stats that show a decrease in crime since he took office, and claiming his policies have helped to reduce the rates of murder and other crimes that rose during the pandemic.

In 2023, rates for murder, battery, assault, burglary, property crime and theft “all dropped sharply,” Biden said, speaking to police chiefs and administration officials gathered in the White House State Dining room for a meeting about crime reduction.

“That matters, as President, public safety and crime reduction is a top priority,” Biden said.

Biden’s remarks come as the killing of nursing student Laken Riley on the University of Georgia campus last week dominates conservative media. A Venezuelan immigrant who had entered the country illegally faces murder and other charges in the case.

The case has become a flashpoint in the immigration debate as the issue rises this month to the top problem facing the U.S., according to national polling of Americans by Gallup, overtaking the government and the economy. “Laken Riley was a spectacular young woman whose life was taken from us, and her great family, by a savage monster who should not have been in our Country,” Trump wrote on social media on Tuesday. “We must rid ourselves of this ridiculous Open Border, right now.”

Both Trump and Biden are set to travel to Texas on Thursday to visit the U.S. border with Mexico. Biden will travel to Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley to bring attention to his demand that Congress fund more border patrol agents and immigration asylum officers. Trump is scheduled to appear about 300 miles away in Eagle Pass to highlight his plans to crack down on legal and illegal immigration if voters return him to office.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked Wednesday if President Biden had spoken to the family of Laken Riley. Jean-Pierre would not confirm whether or not such a call had taken place and referred questions about the case to local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"I do want to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Laken Hope Riley," Jean-Pierre said. "It is heartbreaking. I can't even imagine what the family is going through."

Biden’s remarks at on Wednesday, which were added to his public schedule just hours before he spoke, provided a pointed response to a Republican refrain that his policies have made cities less safe and allowed large numbers of immigrants with criminal records to remain in the country.

Homicides in 2023 are estimated to be down nationwide by 12% from the previous year, according to the White House. Biden credited that drop in part on $15 billion in funding from the American Rescue Plan that went to police departments to add officers and increase community policing and mental health intervention programs. That bill passed in 2021 with no Republican votes, Biden noted.

The funding from the American Rescue Plan has been a “complete game changer” for police in Detroit, said Detroit police chief James White, who introduced Biden. White said homicides declined 18% from 2022 to 2023, to the lowest level since 1966, a shift that can be attributed in part to that funding for new training and mental health responder programs for police in the city. “We still have too many guns in our community, too much violent crime,” White said.

While conservative media routinely reports on crime in American cities and blames liberal policies, reported crime rates are often higher in states that vote consistently for Republicans. The murder rate in red states in 2022 was 33% higher than in blue states for that year, according to a report by the nonpartisan think tank Third Way that analyzed 2021 and 2022 homicide data from Center of Disease Control’s mortality statistics. It was the 23rd consecutive year that states that the Republican presidential candidate won had higher murder rates than those won by the Democratic candidate, Third Way found. Of the ten states with the highest murder rates in 2022, eight of those states voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Thankfully US pilots knew the difference between Gaza and Ukraine, but thanks anyway Mr Biden.

Parachutes containing humanitarian aid fall from the sky after an airdrop in Rafah. On Saturday, the United States carried out its first operation to drop humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, which the UN says is under threat of famine as the war between Israel and Hamas continues.
