Confederacy was act of treason and bases should be renamed, top US general says

Like the country it serves, the U.S. military is fighting an internal battle against racism, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said Thursday, but old names and symbols of that enemy are present and strong enough to sow division.

“Divisiveness leads to defeat,” Milley told the House Armed Services Committee.

“There is no place in our armed forces … for symbols of racism, bias or discrimination.”

The Civil War was an “act of treason,” he said. The south’s military leaders betrayed their nation profoundly, and still, many military installations bear their names, according to Milley.

“It was an act of treason at the time against the union, against the stars and stripes, against the U.S. Constitution, and those officers turned their back on their oath.”

The military has been under pressure for years to change the names of bases like Fort Bragg, in North Carolina, or Fort Benning, in Georgia, but those calls have been especially loud over the last few months as nationwide protests force the country to confront its racist past and present.

In all, there are at least 10 military installations named for members of the Confederacy, according to Military.com.

Milley has ordered a military commission to look into the issue and explore potentially changing the names.

“The way we should do it matters as much as that we should do it,” Milley said.

Nearly half of America’s armed forces, 43%, are members of minority groups, according to Milley, and at least 20% are Black. A name can be more than just a name, particularly when that name is Gen. Braxton Bragg, or Gen. John Bell Hood, he said.

“For those young soldiers that go on to a base of Fort Hood, Fort Bragg, whatever, named after a Confederate general, they can be reminded that that general fought for an institution of slavery,” Milley said.

“I had a staff sergeant when I was a young officer who actually told me that at Fort Bragg. He said he went to work every day on a base that represented a guy who enslaved his grandparents.”

Milley’s efforts put him at odds with president Donald Trump, who has vowed he will “not even consider” allowing the bases to be renamed, McClatchy News reported.

“These monumental and very powerful bases have become part of a great American heritage, and a history of winning, victory and freedom,” Trump said in a tweet.

“Our history as the greatest nation in the world will not be tampered with. Respect our military!”

Even my poor understanding of U.S politics thinks it is unlikely he will be trounced. Especially with an insipid guy like Biden whose greatest achievement was emptying Obamas' bed pan. He is like the grey suit you wear to a funeral when you are not sure if its culturally appropriate to where black or white.
If Biden is elected it will be more because people cant put up with four more years of Trumps embarrassing speeches or general idiocy rather than any huge endorsement of Biden as President.
A bit like patching up that old bomb until you can get that shiney new car you really want with all the bells and whistles. IMHO the U.S. citizenry opted for something more vanilla than a real force for change that other candidates like Bernie offered. This makes me think the U.S. voter is still quite conservative (in comparison with Europe/ Australia, etc) and why it is possible that Trump may still win. Why should I care? Because it effects my country much more than who is the latest king in Butan. From my Oz perspective Trumps actions do not make the U.S.A look like a dependable ally.

You are correct and I will not argue that point. This election will mostly be about how the orange moron defeats himself. The electorate is clearly turning in a big way and at this point I do not see drumpf doing anything to change that in fact he is likely to make it even worse at this point. The data is really not looking good for him at all.

Yes once again you are correct but as I said above this election will be more about how the orange moron is defeating himself. Covid-19 is proving to be a death knell for him and there is no sign he is going to turn that around. In fact, he keeps making this worse for himself on a daily basis.

But this discussion belongs in the 2020 election thread.

I believe it's usually polonium in Russia if they're "lucky" enough to have their death recorded.

If they're abroad and an obvious enemy of the state then it's the country in which they're chosen to be eliminated by the Kremlin that will decide their fate.

Btw, don't you think that Salisbury is a lovely place at this time of year? Such lovely spires!

    Yours,

    Vlad

would i like someone else, I would, I think we need new blood, but Biden would be infinitely better than trump. I work with what I have not what I wish I had,
This is Biden a couple of years ago with Jay Leno. Does trump even know how to drive a car, or do his bone spurs prevent him from driving??

I think Milley got it right...

The majority of the officers in the Confederacy turned traitor against their lawful government in order to support amongst many issues, slavery.

Why should traitors that supported slavery have jack shit named for them?

Racism in US military, Jeez anyone surprised.

The US Navy used to come to Freemantle, it is was amusing to watch, as the boys from the hood, used to get off the ships.and the majority of them segregated themselves from each other.

That's generally the way people behave. How often did you hang out publicly with your aboriginal friends?

No, they don't fuckwit. People generally mix with those they are most comfortable with. Generally, it's with people of the same background as them. It's called "human nature".

What on earth are they gonna do about DC- the District of Columbia? The nations Capitol district is named after a vile genocidist- even I agree with that. One of History's ugliest figures.
Then of course there is Columbus, the Capitol of Ohio, and Columbus circle in NYC.

Yet all of this fuss about a few professional military officers fighting for the 'wrong side' in the Civil war? Pales in comparison. I don't give a stuff btw- the names of military bases, like big deal.
Given US foreign policy, they should rename them after Disney characters. But Christopher Columbus? Maybe the Germans should take note, and rename Berlin Hitlerburg, and Hamburg to Goebbelston.

    Putting aside value judgments,
Do states have the right to secede from the union. or is the USA something like the Hotel California?
Let's envision a scenario where the USA is waging endless wars around the world, and California no longer wants to be part of a union that behaves in such way. and decides it's interests are no longer represented by such a union , does California have the right to become independent .
If they do not, does the American revolution and the cessation of the British colony from the British empire an act of treason.

It's the Hotel California mate- unlike say the UK, which is a voluntary union. That's a bit rich, when you consider that you can hardly get anything meaningful done at the national level (such as a national healthcare system, or gun control), because 'States Rights'. That does not include the right to take a Referendum apparently, and secede if it succeeds. Go figure. I'd be chafing about that, if I was a citizen in one of the richer, more progressive west coast states. At the federal level you're still accountable to- and being held back by, billy bobs and the lobby groups that control them.

    ...no:

...from wiki: "Threats and aspirations to secede from the United States, or arguments justifying secession, have been a feature of the country's politics almost since its birth. Some have argued for secession as a constitutional right and others as from a natural right of revolution. In Texas v. White, the United States Supreme Court ruled unilateral secession unconstitutional..."

It might be easier for the States Rights group (Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, etc) to lobby for the reinstatement of slavery...no more public commotion from those uppity blacks...in the Old South anyway...
