I don't think they know, either.

The interviews I've seen and heard reveal that many of the Americans in Iraq are very poorly informed, and understand little about Iraq.

Not that you can blame them. First they were told that Saddam was behind 9/11, then that he had WMD capable of being launched any minute, then that at was all actually about helping to free the beleaguered Iraqi's. Mixed messages like that from my Govt., I'd be confused too.
