UK more nostalgic for empire than others

UK more nostalgic for empire than other ex-colonial powers

A YouGov poll reveals 30% of Britons believe colonies were better off as part of the British Empire
European colonial powers still loth to admit historical evils

A third of people in the UK believe Britain’s colonies were better off for being part of an empire, a higher proportion than in any of the other major colonial powers, a global survey has revealed.

Britons are also more likely to say they would like their country to still have an empire than people in France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany or Japan, the YouGov polling found.

The results were shared with the Guardian as Britain prepares to find a new place in the international order after Brexit. They have been interpreted by some as a proxy for high levels of nationalist sentiment. Conservative voters were almost twice as likely as Labour voters to yearn for Britain to still have an empire, while Brexit-supporting leave voters were more than twice as pro-empire than remainers.

You see this sort of 'behind the times' outlook all over this forum.

When Troy posts about the corona virus in Germany and Nam Prik Toot replies on the topic of WW2 gas masks, for example.

    It's kind of odd.

You might be surprised how many of the Colonized admit the same thing.
I gave up long ago trying to justify colonialism- let's just say it was a product of the times. But we were the best at it.

A bit of a myth imo, and on the rare occasion when it does happen it's often just out of politeness.

I see you've let the US colonise your language.

Some Englishers just seem to have difficulties letting go.

That whole thing with German's and towels on chairs by the pool being related to WW2 for another example.

Jeezus how much can be squeezed from one stereotype and for how long.

YouGov surveyed 1,684 adults between 10 and 11 June 2019

37% reported that they think it neither something to be proud nor ashamed of
32% said empire was more something to be proud of
19% said it was more something to be ashamed of
    12% said they didn't know

These ex-forces guys in particular tend to trade in outdated stereotypes.

It's amusing for those of us who remember how most of them were bricking it when the shit had just kicked off in the falklands.

Reality slowly dawned that their decade/s of dossing around might be coming to an end.

Almost every Brit I've socialized with seems to feel obliged to bring up 'You're from the colonies, pay respect to Mother Britain hur hur' at some point (or many points) too.

I know it's just banter -- and it can actually be quite funny if done right -- and it doesn't bother me but more often than not I do an internal eye-roll and yawn and think to myself: 'We haven't been a colony since before my grandfather was born and I honestly really don't feel any jealously over not being British ¯\_(ツ)_/¯'

it might be the future though, immigration problems started with the decolonization of the 1950s

time to get back to it, and re-take our foreigner lands

    the Americans can fuck off,

^^ Well I certainly don't- considering I've spent most of my life in ex-colonies.

But when I compare Malaysia & Singapore to neighbouring countries, Fiji to Tonga or Samoa, Sth Africa to Congo, Bahamas & Barbados to Haiti or Dominica, ANZ to pretty much the rest of the sorry world, Canada to Mexico etc, I don't feel so bad. Sorry about America & Rhodesia, that's all.

The Germans are shitting themselves so much that they've started putting beach towels on hospital beds.

Really? I know many Germans and they're far from 'shitting themselves' . . . but the towel thing - well done . Oddly enough you find more Brits wearing socks and sandals and securing 'their' place with towels. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

I guess it's just inadequacy that many Brits constantly refer to Germany or Germans . . . don't worry, when you grow you you too can be . . . nah

But yes, colonialism, the Brits were pricks as were the French etc... and France has more territories outside of their country than the UK with some even voting to stay French

    Abriged version:
    YouGov poll
    global survey
    colonial powers
    historical evils
    the Guardian
Brexit-supporting leave voters ( sic )- (what there are Brexit-supporting remain voters too?)
    nationalist sentiment.
Some insane article using emotive buzz words, trying to equate owning colonies with Brexit.
Brexit ie wanting to leave an inward looking protectionists group to join the international community...
We've left, you lost , get over it...

Most poorly executed, random BREXITer gloat so far.

Not all BREXITers are racist, but all racists are BREXITers...

I have never came across such a resentful lot of failed chavs until I found TD. I have told many of my British co-workers and friends here in Seattle about this forum and not a single one wants anything to do with you coonts.

Because they can communicate in English? Just a guess.

While you're at it 'why don't the poll go ask Indian-erz about nostalgia'

Is there really so much dross still emanating from the foggy island? I guess the old ways of 'keeping the plebs dumb' convinces them to fight for king/queen and country is still applicable

In fairness, the process of de-colonialisation after WW2 was carried out with considerable aplomb, all things considered. They couldn't stop those Hindoos & Muzzies going at it though, but when you look at the deliberate unfolding of a considerable Empire- it is considered to have been done pretty well.

I mean, to give an even fractional comparison- just look at the pettiness, utter hypocrisy and cruelty of the unfolding American empire right now. Declining empire is very dangerous, really.

Interesting point, a big advantage of colonial membership is having an advanced western language to think in.
Many of the third world countries own languages are utterly primative, eg Basa Malaysian not even having a past tense...
It was a massive benefit to the colonies suddenly to have English to think in, before, it was like having to work out your finances using Roman numerals- possible but takes a long long time
