I think it's bullshit. If I wear a Thai silk shirt, it doesn't mean I'm trying to be Thai, but either trying to dress appropriately for the occasion or trying to wear something comfortable.

So if someone wears jeans and a T-shirt, they're trying to appropriate American culture even if they're not American?

It must be the media that comes up with these kind of labels. Most people don't really give a shit.

    ^ Bingo

It is utter horse shite, just a weapon in the armoury of lawyers and those with some axe to grind coz they have nothing more pressing to worry about.

I mean you don't hear the good peeps of Stilton complaining they aren't allowed (by the EU) to make Stilton and use the name.

    EDIT

    Sorry Mendip, Cheddar an all.

    ^ And the flipside:

"In 1996, the Stilton Cheese Makers' Association (SCMA) achieved Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status for blue Stilton from the European Commission. The PDO effectively gives Stilton cheese protection from imitation throughout the EU.

Yep i know but they won't let Silton be made in Stilton and called Stilton, still perhaps that changes now. Its a worry, leaving the EU could mean they start making Melton Mowbray Pork Pies in Caen

As a cultural pikey, you have no business posting on this thread. If only the EU could protect us from such criminal activities.

Back to the OP... I could really care less about cultural appropriation. On the other hand, if it is being used to criticize those fat assed, famous for being famous Kardashians, it can't be ALL bad!

For decades, no one had heard of "cultural appropriation" and there was no problem.
Now people are expending prodigeous amounts of energy on being outraged by white people wearing corn-rows and dread-locks.
Does this mean that black people shouldn't straighten their hair, or, use skin whitening products?
Is Eminem and other white rappers guilty of cultural appropriation? What about white jazz musians?
How about black sportsmen that play professionally at games white people invented? Where does it end? Where's the line?

Many years ago I was in the company of some Norwegians. It was some special day for them. I don't recall exactly what it was but maybe someone here will know. The Norwegians were wearing some kind of headwear that looked like half a burst plastic football with two horns sticking out of the top. In the spirit of the time, I placed one of those things on my head but the Norwegians became quite upset at that. "It's only for Norwegians and you are not Norwegian so you can't even put it on your head!" It seemd to me a rather odd reaction at the time. I suppose nowadays it would be called cultural appropriation. Would having some Norwegian blood in me entitle me to wear one? And would I need to prove it with a Mendip approved DNA test before placing it on my head?

But the whole point is to be outraged at some one just to show the world how "sensitive" you are.
Funny how political correctness is increasing at an inverse rate to how correctness in politics is decreasing (witness Trump, the GOP and Boris).
