Iran's interest in Iraq is all about ensuring the Shia majority, a minority in the region retain control. My view on the US action is that they are conveniently using Iran's meddling in Iraq as a means to escalate as their real concern is their inability to stop Iran's nuclear ambition with sanctions etc not working.
