I quite like the Ruskies meself, don't see them as any different to other empire builders, but everyone knows Putin is smart and a right sneaky fuker, he will use everything at his disposal to get what he wants. The Yermins are currently getting about (here comes a wild guess... ) 15% of their energy supply from Russian gas and this percentage is increasing - it is a stupid policy with real risks attached; it does give Putin leverage over Germany and by extension the EU.

Does the US have the right to impose these sanctions? Of course not, it's a failure of their diplomacy although their diplomacy has pretty much been their military power ever since the 2nd world war...

It's a ridiculous state of affairs: dumb German policy; bullying US tactics. I wonder if US subs will be destroying the undersea pipeline while Ruskie subs try to stop them?

She's a repulsive and dishonest creature, but she's well out of her depth with Putin; he'll eat her alive...
According to the 2018 figures Germany imports 36% oil and 35% gas from Russia. I don't know the potential increase that will occur due to the pipeline. If the US was so concerned politically it would have done something to address this percentage a long time ago. It's being addressed now only because the US can make money from it...no other reason so they can fook off.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, as the saying goes...

Brexiteers should get a good laugh out of this
Can't see that Brexiteers have much to laugh about right now, but tell you what there'll be plenty to laugh over when our NATO partner Erdogan establishes a proxy base in Libya, opposite the EU in the eastern Med, allowing him among other things to control the immigration flow along two porous fronts. Egypt is making an effort to counter with the advantage of a land border, careful to avoid direct confrontation, the EU is looking the other way, while its only leader that appears to be bothered is Macron with the right noises, halfheartedly, aware that such a package would end up in a Brussels that lacks a spine, two balls and a shot of testosterone.

Turkey has already resumed drilling in disputed waters to a bit of grumbling but mostly shrugs from his EU neighbours, and I for one wouldn't be surprised if he decides they're so fcuking weak that he can get away with something novel like invading a few local Greek islands on some pretext, as a negotiating position for further drilling rights and or permanent occupancy.

Then we can all be suitably outraged.

The premise of this thread is false and the answer to the question is within the OP.
" US lawmakers fear the project will give Moscow leverage over European allies."
The US is not telling anyone where to buy their energy , it is telling them where they would like they buy it. and like any other business provides benefits to customers who do business with it, and sanctions to those who do not. No different than any European country.

Nothing wrong with buying cheap gas from Vlad, but if you then become dependent on it you are fucking idiots.

Good logic as usually: Better to buy expensive gas from (please no names here), they do not want from you any dependency nor being a vassal, do they?

Yep, they're too smart to learn the implications of being dependent on China.

I suspect China is "dependent" on many countries, for various industrial and consumer products. The Chinese offer contracts to supply xxxx. The suppliers decide if the offered contract is beneficial to their shareholders. Home or in China production, is a choice the foreign suppliers, not China.

Socially, legally and politically China has its own strong systems, chosen paths, nowadays allegedly called "Socialism with a twist of Beijing", which has served them for millennia. A tweak or two every half century or so, continues to satisfy it's citizens.

Here today gone tomorrow western "empires", dedicated to serving only their "ruling" class are but, grains of sand washed away at every change of the ocean's tides.

Some foreigners have tried and continue to try and force political changes, will they succeed?

IMHO, they haven't so far and any future success is doubtful.

The % currently is 35% allegedly. Far from being "dependent". The Germans and the rest of Europe who choose to, will continue to be supplied with Russian energy commodities, through rain and shine, as Russia has illustrated for few decades.

China likewise delivers its products to all, its specification is customers determined. The customers knows their local markets and supplies what it's own customers require, basic commodities, high tech or baubles.

Relying on unexceptional countries not to rip up signed international agreements, contracts, invasion plans ... is the folly being exposed every day.

Wondering where is the dependency of Europe when after decades of "buying cheap gas from Vlad" they are still buying cheap, even if imposing sanctions on "Vlad"?

Whilst when buying expensive gas from others (please no names here), the others still forcing to buy expensive, and/or threatening by sanctions if not stopping the job...

But perhaps with my poor English I do not understand what is to "become dependent".

    Please enlighten me...

There is a bit of difference between abruptly losing your supply of chainsaws and DVD players as opposed to losing your supply of energy.

Germany kicked out the occupied forces in the east. Now its time to kick out the seppos. So that Germany can be a country again.

Germany owns a trillion dollars in US debt. So its Germany that has been subsidizing the US's defense. Not the other way around

As opposed to the US and Anglo world in general, who are systemic dual debtors to China.

If the US had a trade surplus with the whole world minus China, it would still have a trade deficit, because of China.

That's true. The Russians withdrew gracefully. Without any blood spilled. All they asked was that NATO didn't expand east. But why have peace when you can have war - Seppos.

Perhaps it's coming now after November. Actually, the new POTUS can just de-dust the premises he had made during his VP time - beside the ones made by his boss - and read it again... (maybe, anybody will believe him now at last?)
