To the snotty nosed adults who shared that post insulting a child who is trying to help our planet, our home, shame on you. Shame on you first off for picking on a child. Secondly all those things you mentioned not using plastic bottles back in the 70s, brown paper bags for shopping, walking to school, no maccas or hungry Jack's giving away plastic crap, milk being delivered, local holidays, that's fantastic and had the younger generation be born back then they would have done the same. The big question is... Are you doing that now? Don't sit there and bag out a child for trying to change the world and secure her future if you're not.

Do you use little plastic bags to bag up your fruit and veg at the supermarket then happily collect your little bits of plastic toys at the checkout for your kids?, do you have multiple tvs, laptops, ipads, tablets, ipods and mobile phones in your house? Do YOU walk everywhere now or do you hop in your own 4x4? Do you holiday locally or do you jump on a plane to bali when the price is right? Do you buy single use plastics? Bottles of water? Plastic plates, plastic cutlery, plastic cups? Do you support the meat and dairy industry? Does your milk still come in glass or plastic now? Do you run your air con in summer? Your heater in winter? Do you use single use wipes and make up pads instead of a flannel that can be washed and reused? Do you recycle? Do you compost?

Seriously, think about things. What are you doing to help our planet ?? To help our kids and their kids have a future. I know Greta is inspiring millions. She's probably not perfect, she lives in the same world you do, but she is trying.
    What are you doing ?

Yes, we do. The small fruit single use bags we put the vege/fruit/used tea bags before we compost them. We actually have 2 bins.

    do you have multiple tvs,
Nope, just the one ... but we are thinking about another. 40in in the living area, so not that big by today's standards. Bought it second hand off my Uncle.

    laptops,
there is a dead one under the bed that one of the boys poured a beer into when he was 3. The shop guy tried a repair, but it eventually died.
I also have one good one for when I travel OS.

    ipads,
    Nope

    tablets,
Yep, several. Two are dead from the kids dropping them. Three more were bought, refurbished, at auction.

    ipods and
    Nope

    mobile phones in your house?
Yep, a few dead ones and one each for the grown-ups. Mine is a second-hand one from the Commonwealth Games ... bought at auction.

Do YOU walk everywhere now or do you hop in your own 4x4?
I walk where it's practical. I hate 4WD's. Our car runs on LPG ... a by-product of fuel production
Up until a few months ago, we only had 1 car.

Do you holiday locally or do you jump on a plane to bali when the price is right?
We fly to Thailand to maintain my Family's connection with Thai Culture.

Do you buy single use plastics?
    Rarely

    Bottles of water?
    Rarely ... maybe 2 or 3 a month

Plastic plates, plastic cutlery, plastic cups?
I still have mine bought in the 90's

Do you support the meat and dairy industry?
Not exactly sure what you mean, but yes, we eat meat and drink milk.

Does your milk still come in glass or plastic now?
Plastic ... it's the practical option.

Do you run your air con in summer?
Only on the hottest days and nights ... normally set @ 28C

    Your heater in winter?
Run the Air-Con for Winter mornings ... normally set @ 18C
    It's mainly for the kids

Do you use single use wipes and make up pads instead of a flannel that can be washed and reused?
I don't wear make-up, not much from my partner either.

    Do you recycle?
More then most. We actually also collect others bottles/cans etc and take them to the recycling centre ... and get paid to do it.
    Money goes to the kids.

    Do you compost?
Extensively. Grass clippings (electric mower). We have 3 composting bins.
We also use the compost to grow our own veges/fruit (pawpaw)

    A couple more ...
We have double insulation in the ceiling space, a thermostatically controlled electric roof vent.
    Passive cooling when possible.
    Ceiling fans throughout the house.
    Led lighting.
Solar Panels ... haven't had a power bill in over 5 years
As a 4 person home we use less water then a single occupancy.

    Seriously, we think about things
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

that's fantastic and had the younger generation be born back then they would have done the same. The big question is.
why are the young such fucking lazy entitled hypocrites.

plastic waste abandoned after festivals because the "young" people were just too lazy to cart their waste back home. next year they will turn up with new tents and abandon them as well. yes, ld. the young really do know how to look after the planet.

and as for the poison dwarf, this meme is spot on, and if her ideas and the ideas of the climate change activists she supports are anything to go by, then expect to see many more kids in this situation. she should stfu now.

I wonder what the balance is here for meme creators between...

    1) Complaining about how miserable she looks.
    2) Looking for pictures of her not being miserable in order to make her words look silly.

So far we've got 'eating a sandwich on a train' and 'waving to someone'.

Imagine the thought process. 'I've nailed that 16 year old now. 555'

    Seriously, we think about things
    good to hear.

it would be interesting to hear how others on this thread go about cutting down on consuming, controlling their plastics and reducing pollution. in my experience, it is the ones shouting loudest for others to comply who are the biggest polluters.

Do you use little plastic bags to bag up your fruit and veg at the supermarket then happily collect your little bits of plastic toys at the checkout for your kids?

we nearly always take our plastic bags and a lot of the packaging too back to the supermarket on my next visit and leave it at the customer services desk. they dont like it but reluctantly accept it.

    laptops,

one, the old ones go to a charity, get refurbished and sent to schools i think.

    tablets

one, 5 years old now, android phone likewise.

Do YOU walk everywhere now or do you hop in your own 4x4?

in the uk, mostly walk or use public transport which is very convenient where we live. our car gives good mileage and we never do more than 3000 miles a year in it.
in thailand we have a 15 year old vigo 4x4 diesel pick up, with no dpf or any other pollution reducing stuff on it, its a filthy beast for sure, but changing it to a newer model would increase our carbon footprint compared to continuing to use the old one over around the 5000 kms a years we do.

in the uk we never buy water in plastic bottles, the tap water here in the north is clean and very drinkable, milk comes in plastic bottles that get taken back to the supermarket. we cut down old clothes as cloths rather than using wipes, use vinegar and lemon juice rather than cleaning sprays. we buy high quality clothing and shoes that will last for years rather than the cheap throwaway stuff that needs chucking out after a couple of washes.

we dont use air con either in the uk or in thailand, in the uk we just dont need air con, and in thailand we are on the beach and its nearly always breezy or downright windy. gas fired central heating in the uk for heat and hot water, and very occasional fan use in thailand. our power bills in thailand are laughably small. less so in the uk where energy is expensive.

we are not obsessive about all this, we just do our bit to reduce consumption and waste and encourage recycling where possible.

but when i hear that greta loon mouthing off it makes my blood boil. a 16 year old with no experience whatsoever outside the bubble of privilege she has been brought up in, being manipulated by her celebrity parents and the shadowy industrialists financing her jaunts seems to have taken up residence in the empty and easily influenced heads of the equally naive and self obsessed young......... and also in the equally empty heads of a few "adults" on this forum too.

I'm amazed how many people don't use reusable shopping bags, when they are on sale in most supermarkets for a nominal amount.

I don't know about yours, but the supermarkets around me put what would go into one of those into about ten different throwaway carrier bags, and people don't even try and fix that problem by simply asking them to put everything in one or two bags.

And straws, don't get me started on fucking straws.

If you're sat in Maccy D's or somewhere, get your drink in a fucking cup without a lid and drink out of it like a fucking grown up.

Straws are for fucking toddlers you imbeciles.

Ant, serious this time ... do you really believe the line above.

I'll concede that Greta Thunberg has opened the door/created a platform for the youth voice to enter the debate but "the activist whose determination has single-handedly started a powerful global movement for change" is a bit of a stretch for me.

    IMHO

Only read the first link, footys on. From the article ...

A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use,” said Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, who led the research.
A vegan diet" sorry ... but fuck that shite.

Oats for breakie (no pun intended) ... but it stops there.

Tax, I might appear as a bit of a greenie and while I care and respect Mother Earth, most of the things we do are based on living expenses and
the fact that my Dad lived through the Depression and I was taught that NOTHING is wasted.

Couple of points that were raised.

The single use plastic bags ... we miss them
They were simply used twice by us.
Once to lug the shopping home and secondly, they were the bin liner.
Now we have to BUY bin liners, so it's a zero sum game, just costs us more.
To carry the shopping we buy the earth bags or the solid plastic bag which you use maybe 10/20 times.

    ---

Straws have more then one use.
Anyone who thinks otherwise wasn't walked in my shoes.
Ask disabled people, or a Nursing Home ... they are invaluable.
    Kids use them.
Driving a car, they are usefull.
    Science experiments.

    ---

Really glad they got rid of these things though ... death traps for Marine Life worldwide

I said they are listening to her. That alone is not enough to motivate them to take action, but the millions of voters she is agitating most certainly will. Which is why they are listening to her.
