Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld became the first Republican to formally challenge President Donald Trump for the 2020 presidential nomination from the GOP. On Monday, Weld issued a statement announcing his candidacy for the White House.

"I'm announcing that I'm running for president of the United States as a Republican against President Trump in 2020. ... I really think if we have six more years of the same stuff we've had out of the White House the last two years, that would be a political tragedy, and I would fear for the republic. So, I would be ashamed of myself if I didn't raise my hand and run," Weld said on Monday's broadcast of CNN's "The Lead."

Weld also took to his Twitter account to announce the news and released a three-minute-long video highlighting his achievements during his two terms as governor of Massachusetts in the 1990s.

Sanders has a reasonable chance in promoting Medicare for all.

US Healthcare is a rampant and uncontrolled con game. Holding your health hostage - "pay or die". A useable system exists in Medicare - the fix is to open it up to all. Really just a matter of time but the insurers, pharmaceuticals, and medicos will fight it tooth and nail.

In USA a couple of millennial friends of the family complaining quite loudly about the individual mandate. Not an exact quote but close "I had to pay a $700 fee two years ago and a $800 fee this year. They are forcing me to pay for old peoples health care."

I didn't ask them who they voted for but, based on a few earlier conversations I'd say they were solid "blue".

Back to Sanders: He has to tone down his promotion of "socialism". Socialism is a four letter word in the US. He can, and should, promote his platforms, just don't call it socialism.

Must admit I am a Bernie fan and it astounds me that America in spite of private Insurance and millions of Americans are uninsured or underinsured, spend more as a percentage of GDP than countries like Australia with Universal health insurance. In Australia a person can have the most advanced treatment for cancer or other chronic conditions with little to no cost.

Over the last 5 years I've had millions of dollars of health care in Australia and it cost me, in cash up front $100.

Of course I've paid for it through taxes over the 20 years I worked in Aus but the services and treatment were perfect.

So the taxes I paid were a fair go.
