FAW-Volkswagen to launch 29 models this year despite industry headwinds

"Sino-German joint venture FAW-Volkswagen will launch 29 models, including six new energy vehicles, this year in China, where it sold the most cars of any vehicle manufacturer in 2019. Despite the headwinds of China's overall vehicle market, FAW-Volkswagen delivered 2.13 million vehicles, beating rival SAIC-Volkswagen and reaching a record high in the company's 28-year history.

Liu Yigong, president of the joint venture, said,"FAW-Volkswagen went through an extraordinary year. We have made great efforts and achieved results in brand building, system building, digitalization and new services."

The joint venture has three brands, and each posted encouraging results in 2019.

    Sales of Audi-branded vehicles totaled 688,888 in 2019, up 4.2 percent year-on-year.

Volkswagen brand saw its sales reach around 1.40 million, up 0.5 percent year-on-year. Jetta, which spun off the Volkswagen brand in late 2019, delivered 45,000 vehicles.

"FAW-Volkswagen has not only won the sales championship, but also became an automobile company with extensive market coverage, excellent brand reputation and solid development foundation for sustainable and high-quality growth," said Andre Stoffels, the joint venture's first vice-president responsible for finance.

For example, the company opened the largest proving ground in Asia last year. A 960 million yuan technology development center kicked off construction as well.

The carmaker developed 22 models last year, taking into consideration the preferences of Chinese customers.
The joint venture has also built a team of over 2,000 people across its five manufacturing bases in the country to ensure the quality of its vehicles through the whole processes, from purchase to after-sales services.

Thanks to its solid foundation, FAW-Volkswagen has set more ambitious sales goals for its three brands, although the overall market is expected to face a downturn in 2020.

"China's overall economic situation is good from the perspective of historical development," Stoffels said, "so there is still a lot of potential in the automotive industry."

The Volkswagen brand will strive to realize a target of 1.43 million sales. Audi will aim for 700,000 and Jetta will shoot for 200,000, executives said.

Sun Huibin, executive vice-president of the joint venture's Audi division, said the brand will offer 23 all-new or facelifted models this year as part of its efforts to push sales over 700,000.

Audi was the most popular premium vehicle brand in the country over the past three decades. By the end of 2019, it had delivered 5.9 million vehicles in China, the largest customer base among all premium vehicle brands.

Jetta has unveiled three models, the latest a mid-sized SUV. It has built a sales network of around 200 dealerships across the country, which is expected to reach 285 by the end of this year.

Liu said there are many challenges and great opportunities awaiting the joint venture, adding that FAW-Volkswagen will define 2020 as the year of transformation. "We will inspire the potential of Volkswagen, Audi and Jetta and transform ourselves to offer high-quality products and services," Liu said."

UK, France reiterate commitment to upholding Iran nuclear deal

"Britain and France on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to the Iran nuclear deal while acknowledging the need to define a long-term framework to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, said a Downing Street spokesperson.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron made the remarks during a meeting on the margins of the Berlin conference on Libya.

"They agreed on the importance of de-escalation and of working with international partners to find a diplomatic way through the current tensions," the spokesperson said.

France, Britain and Germany said Tuesday that they have triggered the dispute mechanism set up in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the hope to preserve the nuclear deal and bring Iran back into full compliance with its commitments.

Iran, however, said its withdrawal from practical commitments under the JCPOA is a reaction to the US exit from the deal in May 2018 and the subsequent sanctions, and also a response to Europe's sluggishness in facilitating Iran's banking transactions and its oil exports.

"Britain, France and Germany, three parties to the Iranian deal, claim that Europe has kept its obligations under JCPOA, however, in reality, they have not imported Iran's oil and have not facilitated Iran's international banking actions," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted Thursday.

Meanwhile on Libya, the spokesperson said Johnson and Macron also discussed the ongoing conflict in the war-torn country.

Johnson stressed the need to bring an end to the fighting and for all parties to support peace talks to determine a way forward for the Libyan people, said the spokesperson.

Gathering envoys from the United States, Russia, Britain, France and China, among others, the Berlin conference on Libya was called after warring sides in Libya -- the UN-backed Government of National Accord and the Libyan National Army -- failed to reach a deal in Moscow."

Of the two opinion commentators one has lived in China for some years and the other seems to be a knowledgable economist. They have views, which were probably unlike your own.

But we will never know as you, as usual, fail to comment on the content.

Not a lover of RT but I watched the whole program and found it thought provoking. I think they quite nailed how the USA fueled the rise of China. Certainly worth watching if you have an open mind.

One wonders how RT may be mandated, is it like the necessity to register personal information if one desires an app only obtainable on certain sites?

Is ones electricity with held if one does not have a recording device in ones pocket, living room table or vehicle?

The video, produced to WW satandards, hosted by reasonable people who intelligentlydiscussed topics with apparently knowledgable guests. You may have issues with the producers, you mah have issues the hosts, you may have issues with the "experts", which I am sure you are able and could to present here on TD.

Your blanket comments based on pre-conceptions shows a closed mind unfortunately.

    Thanks for watching.

Similar to mine the hosts led the discussion, they had an agenda to share and the two "experts" did introduce and disagree on some topics, politily but did not engage in shouting matches or threats of "splattering" each other.

Stocks, Bond Yields Tumble As Fears Over Coronavirus Outbreak Spread

"Dow futures are down over 100 points, AsiaPac equity markets are down harder, and Treasuries are well bid along with gold after a Chinese officials confirmed the coronavirus can be spread by human-to-human contact, and the deadly disease is spreading to other asian nations.

“Now we can say it is certain that it is a human-to-human transmission phenomenon,”
Zhong Nanshan, a scientist who is leading a government-appointed expert panel on the outbreak, said in an interview on state-run television on Monday.

As The New York Times reports, cases have been reported outside China.

The authorities in Thailand detected the new coronavirus last week in two Chinese women who had flown from Wuhan to Bangkok on separate trips. The government said the women, aged 74 and 61, were in good condition.

In Japan, a Chinese man who returned from Wuhan on Jan. 6 was also confirmed to have the disease. He was discharged after five days in a hospital.

South Korea confirmed its first case of the coronavirus on Monday in a 35-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan who arrived on Sunday at Incheon International Airport, which serves Seoul.

The woman was found with a fever, muscle pain and other symptoms while going through customs and was immediately quarantined for tests, said Jung Eun-kyeong, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The woman was traveling with five other people intending to spend the Lunar New Year holidays in South Korea and Japan,
Ms. Jung said. South Korean officials were running tests on anyone believed to have come in contact with the woman in the plane, she said.

China’s leader, Xi Jinping, said on Monday that the outbreak “must be taken seriously” and that every possible measure should be taken to contain it, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.

President calls containing outbreak urgent task during Chinese New Year holiday

    "
President Xi Jinping urged resolute efforts on Monday to contain the spread of pneumonia cases caused by a new strain of coronavirus as cases of the contagion rose to 224, all but six of them confirmed, as of 8 pm on Monday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remark in an instruction on the prevention and control of the disease.

All-out efforts must be made in the prevention and control of the contagion, Xi said, as he called for closer attention to related work.

Given massive population flows during the upcoming holiday of Chinese New Year, which falls on Jan 25, it is an urgent task to properly prevent and control the disease, Xi said.

He urged Party committees and governments at various levels as well as relevant departments to make people's lives and health a top priority, devise meticulous plans, mobilize all available resources and take concrete and effective measures to contain further spread of the sickness.

Every means should be tried to save and treat the infected, identify the cause of the contagion, strengthen case monitoring and standardize diagnostic procedures, Xi added.

He called for timely disclosure of outbreak information and a deepening of international cooperation.

Measures should be taken to guide public opinion, make relevant policies accessible to the public to uphold social stability and ensure people across the country enjoy a peaceful and happy festival, Xi said."

China virus death toll rises to nine as pandemic fears mount

"The death toll from a new flu-like coronavirus in China rose to nine on Wednesday with 440 confirmed cases, Chinese health officials said as authorities stepped up efforts to control the outbreak by discouraging public gatherings in Hubei province.
Another 2,197 people who came into contact with infected people were isolated, with 765 so far released from observation, National Health Commission vice-minister Li Bin told reporters, adding that there was already evidence that the virus was being spread through “respiratory transmission”.

“Recently there has been a big change in the number of cases, which is related to our deepening our understanding of the disease, improving diagnostic methods and optimizing the distribution of diagnostic kits,” said Li.
As China vowed to tighten containment measures in hospitals, the World Health Organization (WHO) was due to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to determine whether the outbreak of the new coronavirus constitutes a global health emergency.

The virus, originating in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei at the end of last year, has spread to Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Macao, as well as the United States, Thailand, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

The Chinese government has been providing daily updates on the number of cases in a bid to head off public panic, as millions of people prepare to travel domestically and abroad for the country’s Lunar New Year celebrations starting this week."

China, Myanmar to build shared future. What’s there for India?

    Eurasia Topics-myanmar-768x563-jpgChinese

President Xi Jinping held talks with Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in Nay Pyi Taw, Jan. 18, 2020.

"The state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Myanmar on January 17-18, the first of its kind in nineteen years, has been a transformative event in regional politics from the perspective of China-Myanmar bilateral relations as well as regional security.

The “comprehensive strategic partnership” between the two countries is moving toward building a Myanmar-China Community with a Shared Future “based on the aims of mutual benefits, equality and win-win cooperation,” as the joint statement issued after Xi’s visit frames it.

Xi said in his banquet speech in Nay Pyi Taw that the reason why the “fraternal friendship between the two countries can last thousands of years” is that they have “stood together through thick and thin and adhered to mutual respect and mutual benefit.” He urged the two countries to be “good neighbours like passengers on the same boat” and create a more favourable environment for their economic and social development.

Xi said the two countries should “push the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) into substantive construction” and as “good brothers to pass on their friendship from generation to generation.”

Myanmar has accorded a grand reception for Xi. State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said that China has always been a good friend of Myanmar, and fate has bound the two sides closely. The two sides agreed to promote the construction of the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, the New Yangon City and the China-Myanmar Border Economic Cooperation Zone, as well as roads, railways and power and energy infrastructures. Overall, the visit marks the transition of the CMEC from conceptual planning to substantive construction, as Chinese Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi assessed.

Wang said Myanmar Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing pledged to Xi that the Myanmar military will firmly support and promote the joint construction of the Belt and Road.

Significantly, Wang put the partnership in the international context characterised by profound changes unseen in a century, with injustice and inequality remaining prominent in international relations, and “protectionism, unilateralism as well as bullying actions… rising,” which pose new challenges in safeguarding the two countries’ sovereignty, security and development interests.

The joint statement underscored that China “firmly supports Myanmar in its aim to adopt a development path that is in line with its national conditions, the safeguarding of its legitimate rights and interests, as well as national dignity, on the international stage, and to maintain the momentum of development and stability.”

It said that the two countries agreed to continue to “enhance coordination and cooperation in regional and multilateral fora such as the United Nations, China- ASEAN cooperation and Lancang-Mekong cooperation platforms” and “render mutual support on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns.” In particular, China voiced support for “the efforts of Myanmar to address the humanitarian situation and to promote peace, stability and development for all communities in Rakhine State.”

Clearly, the three cornerstones of the emerging relationship are: the understanding and mutual commitments reached at the highest levels of leadership through sustained and intensive strategic communication (Xi received Suu Kyi six times between June 2015 and April 2019); the launch of the CMEC; and, China’s firm support for Myanmar’s core interests and major concerns and its help to ward off western bullying (the joint statement singled out that China “supports the efforts of Myanmar to address the humanitarian situation and to promote peace, stability and development for all communities in Rakhine State.”)

China has become a stakeholder — even guarantor — in the resolution of the Rohingya issue, considering that the terminus of the 1600-kilometre long CMEC — Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone with a deep-water port opening into the Bay of Bengal — lies in the Rakhine State. The CMEC includes big cross-border oil and gas pipelines that have been operating already, while an industrial park and major railway are planned involving massive Chinese investments. A Xinhua report estimated that the port and industrial park combined will create more than 100,000 jobs each year for local residents and create tax revenues of $15 billon during the “initial franchise period of 50 years”.

    Eurasia Topics-myanmar-3-jpg

    China-Myanmar Economic Corridor

The CMEC allows China access to the Indian Ocean and to shorten the route for its oil and gas imports from the Persian Gulf and connects China’s relatively less developed southern regions to the world market. A major goal of Chinese strategic planners is being realised, overcoming staunch opposition by the US. From an Indian perspective, CMEC signifies a major setback to its counterstrategy to discredit, debunk and derail the BRI projects in the region.

Meanwhile, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has caused revulsion and anger in Bangladesh and a deepening of relations between Dhaka and Beijing can be expected. Clearly, India’s BIMSTEC agenda is spluttering. India has also lost the plot on regional connectivity. With Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar wading into the BRI, India stands badly isolated. Things didn’t have to come to such a sorry pass.

Heavy maritime traffic will inevitably call for a much bigger Chinese naval presence in the Indian Ocean. It is entirely conceivable that Chinese Navy will at some point in a not too distant future seek access to the ports in the region which figure in its BRI matrix — Gwadar, Hambantota, Chittagong and Kyaukphyu. The geopolitical ramifications of the CMEC are most profound for the Bay of Bengal region.

If the Strait of Malacca was supposed be the thermometer to measure the future balance of naval power between India and China, it may not hold good anymore. India has been advancing its positions towards the western mouth of the Strait with a view to challenge the expansion of Chinese maritime interests in the Indian Ocean but the CPEC and CMEC significantly rebalance the regional power in the Indian Ocean.

Of course, it is far from fated that even economically, diplomatically and militarily ascendant China will steamroll India and ensconce itself as the predominant power in the Indian Ocean. An American analysts recently revelled at the prospect that “a Sino-Indian great game is afoot in the Andaman Sea. It will take years, if not decades, of gamesmanship to determine a victor.”

Most certainly, the Indian interests do not lie in entrapment in esoteric game theories. What the emergent situation signals is the urgency to deepen strategic communication between Delhi and Beijing. The political leadership must steamroll the institutional resistance to policy rethink."

Baghdad to send delegates to Russia, Ukraine, China to buy latest air defense — Iraqi MP

"According to the high-ranking official, the lawmakers are looking into obtaining weapons in exchange for Iraqi oil shipments.

Iraq has plans in store to send delegations to Russia, China and Ukraine to discuss buying modern air defense systems to protect its territory from any possible aggression or violation of its sovereignty, says Badr al-Ziyadi, a member of the parliament's security and defense committee.

"The delegations intend to visit such countries as Russia, China and Ukraine, to negotiate the purchase of modern systems to protect Iraq’s airspace," he told As Sabah newspaper.

"The Iraqi parliament is right now forming a joint executive and legislative delegation to visit the developed countries and sign contracts on procuring advanced weapons."

According to al-Ziyadi, the lawmakers are looking into obtaining weapons in exchange for Iraqi oil shipments, similar to the "oil for reconstruction" agreement signed with China recently.

"Many nations indicated [their] readiness to ship modern weapons to Iraq in exchange for oil," the lawmaker said. "This is the best way to ensure the shipment of good weapons to Iraq without corruption and bribery."

According to the legislator, the delegations would also like to talk over completing the installation of modern thermal imaging devices at the border, which will help detect and prevent any terrorist infiltration.

"The inadequate arming of border forces with modern weapons was the result of a mistake in relying on an agreement with the United States which spent enormous sums of money and never fully finished [the project]," al-Ziyadi said.

"This is why the Iraqis must count on themselves and turn to the eastern bloc to equip its army."

Buying Russia’s S-400s and US intervention

Earlier in January, The Wall Street Journal reported citing Iraqi lawmakers that Baghdad was mulling over buying Russia’s S-400 air defense systems and were in negotiations with Moscow. According to the legislators, Iraq decided to step up the consultations because of a looming US troop pullout. According to the WSJ’s sources, Russian officials earlier offered these systems to Iraq. On January 14, US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Joey Hood opined that Washington might impose sanctions on Iraq if it does buy the Russian missile defense systems.

Later, commenting on these threats, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that Moscow did not fear Washington’s sanctions, and knows how to counter those restrictions. Meanwhile, this past September, Al-Ziyadi said that the Iraqi legislature would provide the government with all kinds of support and furnish it with all the legitimate authority and power in the event of a decision to purchase the S-400s.

The S-400 is a Russian medium-and long-range anti-aircraft missile defense system, designated to hit planes and cruise missiles at a distance of 400 km and ballistic targets travelling faster than Mach 10 at a distance of 60 km"'

Chart of the week: Global trade through a US-China lens

"Who dominates global trade? It is well recognised that China has become the world’s largest trading nation. Less appreciated is the effect this has had in displacing the United States from its traditional dominance as a trading partner for other countries around the world.

We examined this using data from the IMF’s Direction of Trade Statistics database, which provides a repository of bilateral trade flows for most countries. We focus on gross trade flows (i.e. exports plus imports) which serves as a measure of the degree of trade integration between two economies and ask for each country whether the US or China is the larger trading partner.

China’s rise since the turn of the century has been swift.

In 2001, the year China acceded to the World Trade Organisation, over 80% of countries with data available had a larger volume of trade with America than China.

By 2018, that figure was down to a little over 30% – with two-thirds of countries (128 out of 190) trading more with China than the United States. Equally important, 90 countries traded more than twice as much with China as with America (these are shown in dark red in the chart).

The turning point was the global financial crisis, with China overtaking the United States as the larger trading partner for more than half of all countries. In recent years the trend in China’s favour has petered out as its economy has slowed while America’s has picked up. But the global trade landscape is already substantially reshaped."

The link takes you to the original site where an animated world is displayed. It is a map of the world displaying which countries are trading with either USA of China. The maps has two basic colours Blue for USA and Red for China, countries with equal trade are slightly whitish.

The image starts at 1980 and finishes at 2018. Initially the globe is mostly blue, indicating USA having the major share. As the years go bye more Red is introduced and towards the end the image indicates how China has become the dominant trade partner in Asia, Africa, Oceania and most of South America. A few countries in Europe are still blue/bluish, UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Portugal, Norway and Finland.
