    Question Can Moderation survive?

In an age of instant anonymous criticsm, flashmobs and polarization can moderate centrism survive.

A brief glance at the headlines from Austria,Hungary,Netherlands,,Italy,Australia, Germany, Sweden,UK , USA all reveal increasing support for non centrist opinions.

Is there a common theme or is it coincidence?

I would guess the midpoint depends where the extremes lie.

My centre has been going towards the equator for many years due to entropy

there has been a rise in populism/nativism in many parts of the world primarily due to immigration fears and mismanagement of humanitarian crises.

fortunately, like most trends, this too shall pass.

Nonsense. Sounding like a true Eurocentric apologist, ReachAround.

You, and most others, don't have the capabilities to recognize as such - so you invent, and repeat, the ever popular [and faux] geopolitical analysis.

Yes but not as long as the current cycle of group identification and group loyalty even if beyond reason and logic prevails. It will pass as in the past but with social media and 24/7 news media will take longer than previous historical swings from right wing extremism though periods of moderation to left wing extremism.

What we are seeing now is the swing from a relatively long peroid of liberal, left wing, concensus which to a degree is reaching extreme. Now a push by a growing number against it. Astute politicians have noted and as politicians exploit the movement to gain power.

For the near future concensus through "moderation" will be rare. Mainly because those in one group are so indoctrinated in their group identity mantra they refuse to listen to other groups. A recipe for chaos.

I think not- the right wing nutters are huge victim card players, even more so than the far left. The idea that in this day and age that white males are somehow oppressed is utterly absurd. The older I get, the more I drift left- kinda the opposite of the old adage about becoming more right wing with age. Fear of "otherness" the the bane of modern society, it is regressive, illogical and often founded on a solid bedrock of fake news and polemics from plastic politicians only in it for their own gain.

It is lack of immigration post Brexit that worries me, most of the shops on the high street in Great Yarmouth seem to be owned by folks from the mainland, if they have to leave post Brexit there are going to be many boarded up shops, this will lead to a rise in petty crime. I'm sure the local folks will find a way to blame others, as there is a huge false sense of entitlement. The EU owes you nothing and neither does the UK for that matter- grab life by the horns and own it. Snowflakes on both side of the political spectrum- all too easy for them to cry victim and chuck in the towel- populist politicians feed on this weakness.

Really ray? this too shall pass? sounds rather pious.

Please explain how immigration and humanitarian crisis will pass in a world accelerating toward ecological and economic meltdown.

^ have you always had problems with reading comprehension?

it's the current movement toward populism/nativism that will eventually pass. if you had even the most rudimentary understanding of history, you would realize that there is an ebb and flow to this sort of extreme, reactionary ideology.

There may well be an ideological shift away from nationalist authoritarianism, but we are at the beginning of that trend now and the economic and ecological factors creating this current human diaspora are on a disastrous trajectory with no intelligent solution being adopted.

In answer to your question, I don't have a problem with comprehension, I have a problem with you talking bullshit.

So, please tell us when you predict 'this too shall pass'.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"
