Lest we forget 79th anniversary of WW2

Today marks the anniversary of the second world war.
Perhaps the greatest man made disaster with 50-60 million direct deaths and global damage.
The date is easy for e to recall as you had to be 20 to join the fun and it was my Dad's 20th birthday.
He volunteered for the navy and ended up in Burma and ended as a Captain in Calcutta.

I am surprised how little mention in the press or perhaps the lessons still to be learned as we witness nazi salutes in Chemnitz which never happened when it was Karl Marx Stadt

Huh? Don't see any pro Russian posts.
False Flag operation in Gleiwitz was German capture of radio station the night before they invaded Poland.

Some would argue WW2 started in 1937 when Japan invaded China but maybe that doesn't count.

I guessed you missed the point of my post.

It is the Russian apologists that quickly pointed this out. There is a reason for it.

I was pleased to see local schools back home, marking the centenary of WW1 by sewing poppy seeds in school grounds.
A poignant reminder of the horrific losses.

Soialist council too. Well done to all concerned

WWII had its roots in the end of WWI; when the victorious allies demanded too much from Germany.

Indeed. Fortunately not repeated after WW2. Now the losers in both Europe and Asia are doing quite well.

Say what you like about Churchill, and he had many personal flaws, but at least he had served on the front line as a young officer, before he used his undoubted oratory to imbue the British forces with belief when he became leader in a time of crisis.

BelAir, your 20/20 historical vision does you great credit.

Of course the war would never have been won without the experience and competence of the British Army officers.
