First comment: 13% of the audience said they would not change their stance despite what they hear in the debate.
Says to me (not having heard the debate yet, also), that at least 13% of the audience are pigheaded idiots... or geniuses .
Need to listen further... taking a siesta now.
Oh...before hearing the debate, I'll say that (contrary to my above comment) I'm rooting for Fry. But lets see. It is a debate after all.
Jordan Peterson, a psychology professor with controversial views on gender, race and political correctness, was offered a visiting fellowship by Cambridge only for it to be withdrawn within 48 hours.
it's the age of the echo chamber. discussion with those of differing views, even giving a voice to those with differing views is now verboten in todays education system. On Monday Professor Peterson, who believes that white privilege is a myth, announced on his YouTube channel that he was looking forward to coming to the faculty of divinity for two months this year. He said that it would “give me the opportunity to talk to religious experts of all types for a couple of months, as well as students”.
Yesterday a university spokesman said that he would no longer be coming. “We can confirm that Jordan Peterson requested a visiting fellowship, and an initial offer has been rescinded after a further review,” he said. The faculty of divinity refused to disclose why it had changed its mind.
Cambridge University Students’ Union welcomed the decision and said that “his work and views are not representative of the student body and as such we do not see his visit as a valuable contribution to the university, but one that works in opposition to the principles of the university”.
In 2016 Professor Peterson, who teaches psychology at the University of Toronto, said that he would refuse to use the preferred pronouns of his students and colleagues, in breach of anti-discrimination law, and carry on using “he” and “she”.
That made him a darling of the alt-right and his book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, became a bestseller in several countries including the UK. His YouTube channel has 65 million views.
He believes that marginalised groups are infantilised by a culture of victimhood and offence-taking, that political correctness threatens freedom of thought and speech, and that “the West has lost faith in masculinity”. He also says that the gender pay gap is largely a reflection of the differences between men and women, rather than of discrimination.
In November he visited Cambridge to speak at the Union, an event that was interrupted by a student dressed as a lobster. Professor Peterson uses the example of lobsters to argue that hierarchies are a natural phenomenon.
Professor Peterson was active on Twitter after the offer of a visiting fellowship was withdrawn, but made no comment.
In December St Edmund’s College, Cambridge awarded Noah Carl the Toby Jackman Newton Trust research fellowship. He is a social scientist who has spoken at a eugenics conference and has said that hostility to immigrant groups draws on “rational beliefs” about stereotypes that are “quite accurate”.
After 200 academics signed a letter criticising the scholar St Edmund’s set up an external grievance committee to look into it.

pathetic.
Yup. Whatever happened to "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Or is Voltaire also banned now?

Nothing happened to it. It was always bullshit. Not one of the many people who use that quote to justify unpalatable opinions have ever defended any of those opinions to the death. It's a hypocrites substitute for action, a nostrum for armchair warriors. And no, Voltaires not banned, why would he be, the quotes not his - he never said it.

Defending the right to say something is not the same as defending the opinion, B0b. In many supposed advanced western countries the Nanny State tells you what is permissible to say and think anyway.
The laws are written such that ... this freedom [of expression] "may be subject to formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society."
Heavily governed and restrictive freedoms aren't very free, are they? The left likes to champion itself as the defenders of free-speech and free thought, but they are the first to shut down anything that doesn't fall in line with their lockstep intolerance (see also: Cambridge).

I can defend something until I die. It doesn't mean I have to die because of, or as a result of, defending it.
This statement just displays the utter arrogance and contempt shown by the faculty for those with differing views and their cowardice for refusing him a platform. The faculty of divinity refused to disclose why it had changed its mind.
Did they disclose why to you?Originally Posted by taxexile

So you think "defend to the death" means waffling on interminably until you eventually die of old age? An interesting interpretation of Evelyn Halls famous quote.
Why is it wrong for Cambridge to deny a platform to anyone they want? Would you allow just anyone to turn up in your living room and spout endless nonsense through the windows at passers-by? Would you then defend to the death their right to do that?

The left hate him because in debate he clobbers them every time.
Having said that I don't agree with everything he says, but for the most part he speaks sense.
I can't get yout*** at the moment but if you can find the interview with a female journo, pommy, Cathy something I think, where she has an epiphany in the middle you'll see what I mean.
The left are shit scared of taking him on because he points out the flaws in much of their thinking, and does it so eloquently. Though he does tend to waffle sometimes.
“If we stop testing right now we’d have very few cases, if any.” Donald J Trump.
^Agreed. He makes people who have a very high opinion of themselves, look very very stupid. And he does it succinctly and precisely.
A lot of these university twats exist in their own little echo chamber and are out of touch with the rest of the world. I think they have the right to do that even if it's fucking retarded. The world is poorer because of it. By avoiding, rather than encouraging, open debate, Cambridge is demonstrating what a safe-space bubble they operate in, and how outside opinions are unacceptable.
The school invited, then disinvited him.
Cambridge is the Left? What planet do you live on?
A lot of people going off half-cocked on this one. Firstly it was the the faculty of divinity that revoked his invite, hardly a bastion of leftists, and they haven't even said why.
Maybe they think he fucks pigs to worship Satan (hail!) or something.
Half-cocked is a very apt description.
Remember we call them gammon because of the characteristic sweaty pink and white complexion caused by their permanent outrage.
Silly old men living in their fantasy worlds, screaming at the tops of their voices, making thousands of videos and writing millions of words about how they're being silenced with absolutely no sense whatsoever of the irony of it.
That's it in a nutshell.Originally Posted by DrB0b
