The new GFC: Great Facebook crash

Imagine a world where Facebook was banned.

The year is 2021. The world is a very different place.
The #deleteFacebook campaign of 2018 changed the way humanity communicates, the way people relate to each other,
the very way we think about life itself.

As the groundswell of public opinion grew into an irresistible wave, governments around the world had no choice but to respond.

It was determined the Cambridge Analytica scandal was an unforgivable breach of privacy and a savage blow against freedom itself,
despite nobody being able to explain what had actually happened.

Authorities moved swiftly to ban Facebook and exile Mark Zuckerberg to the Kamchatka Peninsula, where he now works as a crab farmer.

Finally, the world's data, and the privacy of millions, was safe.

But since the abolition of Facebook, we have faced a few problems, to which we have had to find increasingly creative solutions.

    ---

The new GFC: Great Facebook crash

However, there remained a pressing issue.
After Facebook went offline, the global economy went into a sharp downturn, as businesses found themselves
unable to effectively market their products, while consumers, unaware of the amazing offers that were out there, s
at placidly in their homes, staring non-capitalistically at the walls.

The challenge became how to get the corporate message to the target market without the huge Orwellian engine of
    Zuckerberg's grand edifice?

Just as it seemed the global depression would become a permanent state of being, the business community came up with
    the perfect solution: FaceShop.

With FaceShop, any company could pay a monthly fee, supply a list of people they considered potential consumers, and
FaceShop would build a small store outside each of their houses, selling the company's goods and services.

The beauty of FaceShop is it requires no input from consumers.
No need to provide any personal information; the corporate customers of FaceShop simply take the best guess they
can as to who might like their products, and whoever they choose gets a shop, or several shops, in their front yard.

Privacy is protected, and the basic human right to shop is upheld.

It's been a wild few years, but we can all be grateful we've arrived at a place where we can live our lives as before,
enjoying all the fruits of modernity without worrying about the spectre of corporate surveillance.

The online world is finally safe for all, and now the only threats to our freedom are the rogue self-driving cars stalking
our streets, the roving bands of unemployed ex-Facebook employees and Twitter's recent purchase of the world's
    largest motion-sensor camera firm.

Facebook suspends and investigates data analytics firm Crimson Hexagon

The new GFC: Great Facebook crash-9636556-3x2-940x627-jpg

Facebook says that it has suspended Boston-based analytics firm Crimson Hexagon while it investigates
how it collects and shares Facebook and Instagram's user data.

    Key points:
    • The firm has a Russian non-profit client with ties to the Kremlin, according to the Wall Street Journal
    • Hexagon Chief Technology Officer Chris Bingham says company 'abides completely' with regulations
    • Mr Bingham says his company only collects public data, not private date

Facebook has been facing increased scrutiny over how third-party firms use its data since news broke in March
that data firm Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed user data.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that Facebook had suspended Crimson Hexagon and says among the firm's
clients is a Russian non-profit with ties to the Kremlin.

I can foresee a day when Facebook is no more. People, groups, organisations and companies will then probably revert to having only websites instead of focussing mostly or only on Facebook pages.

^ If I was to say I do, Tom or Cyrille would be along within minutes to say, "He said who is other than a bored housewife or kid...". I know you guys.
It's good for staying in touch with friends and family. And that says it all, really, because all my friends and family are on it. Most of them are not bored housewives or kids.

You could be right, but I doubt it. I think a resurgance will come for the reasons I said; keeping in touch with friends and family. And FB is great at networking whereas websites aren't. Just last week an old school mate friended me. He would never have found me in this big world if it was all just websites or web forums.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I meant that I foresee a day when Facebook is no more, and then after that (when there is no Facebook), people, groups, organisations and companies will then probably revert to having only websites instead of focussing mostly or only on Facebook pages. I didn't say or mean to say that people reverting to websites etc will cause Facebook to be no more.

I think the OP is a little bit misleading. Only very small companies and shops rely on FB. Medium to large companies may use FB, but already have their own website.
What I did misunderstand was I thought you meant websites such as TD would become the meeting places for people with common interests if FB ever faded away.

I think FB is one of those things that's only as good as what it's used for.

I just used it earlier today to seek a recommendation, got some awesome and immediate feedback and ended up making an appointment for goods and services with a guy a half a world away.

    Bloody brilliant.

I have 6 grandchildren and a big family in 3 different countries and it's the easiest way to keep track of all of them. I've never looked at a news site. I would have no idea how. Facebook Messenger is cool because it rings on all of my phones and computers and TV at the same time so I know if I have a call much easier than being locked to one phone. Most of the calls I get are video calls and it is good for that. I use facebook to log into Line and Bigo and other interesting sites because it's easy. I have multiple sims in tablets and phones that I switch back and forth with the same number but I can only have one device on the number at a time - Facebook messenger solves that problem. Facebook has 2.19 billion regular users. What's that 34 times the population of the UK. Don't think it will go away soon.

Remember the world before the indoctrinated presence of interacted social media or the greater reach of the internet?

Developed fashions aren't really what they appear to be.

I guess I'm simply not a 'networker'. Family and a few friends I keep in touch with via e-mail, or phone calls to my Mom who, at 95, uses e-mail less and less. I just don't feel, and have never felt, the need for constant, virtually hourly, interaction with ANYONE. The best thing about full retirement was throwing my dumb phone in a drawer, and checking it once a week or so just to see who I missed.

Funny how absolute market dominance can be replaced in a heartbeat.

    Myspace
    Lotus 1-2-3
    etc.

^Guess it makes my point about me not being a 'networker' as I have no idea what those are/were.

Mind you, I'm not criticizing anyone. People have different needs. I am a solitary person by nature, and get plenty of personal contact at home.

I went to the news sites just now. Seems like a difficult way to get news. I like Drudge because it's all in one place. Facebook I block any friends who send me news stories. They don't see that they're blocked. I don't like the nasty stuff. I left the States to get away from stuff like that. I can get baited but it is not something that normally occupies my time. I used to help people on line but I have to come to realize I was trying to help trolls who were not really asking question but making a negative comment about Thailand, a brand of computer or phone or whatever. Guy asks why is his new Asus so slow with Win 10. I told him but he freaked and started an argument with me. I have the same laptop he had and I know what made it slow and how to fix it but that's not what he had in mind. He wanted to bash; Thai service people , win 10, Asus, and his 5G router and 3bb. They are nuts.

I really don't like censorship. Even if it lets fake news fly. One has to be bright enough to realize the difference. I know there are many forums that any differing viewpoints are censored and that reminds me too much of Nazi Germany which I think must be guarded against. I think the current USA admin has a tendency that way and I think it should not be allowed to stop publication of news because it is fake. I even fight with myself about it. I think the FBI chief should be muzzled and at the same time don't. It is a blatant self contradiction.

Me too. Shudder at the thought. Why would you think FB entails constant upkeep, any more than your phone in the drawer? One uses it when one feels like it. It's nice to wake up one morning on the other side of the world and see a video of your grandkid's first steps, maybe. Sure, you can get it by email if they sent it...

As I said, purely my personal choice and my personal opinion. You are free to do whatever you wish. Unlike you, I have neither need nor desire to turn every post into an argument.
