Or it never existed since a bunch of diverse groups with diverse agendas trying to pull strings to influence things is not a deep state. It is the nature of politics and has been going on since the dawn of organised government.
Non governmental groups (including private industry) trying to influence government policy is part of the nature of government in any normally functioning 21st century democracy. It should be monitored and policed to avoid the destructive corruption of government but it cannot be and does not need to be eliminated.
Lets go back to this. I meant Lofgren "gatekeeping" in the sense of withholding info and not presenting the full scope of the Deep State, not necessarily lying. Could well be he's a compartmentalized Deep State asset who's not fully aware himself of the entire big picture. From a Deep State perspective, who better than that to go on with Moyers to "expose" or "explain" the Deep State.
To me the Deep State is Eisenhower's MIC(Military Industrial Complex) fully expanded into every aspect of US Govt/society and fully out of control. It's turned our establishment/system into a truly Machiavellian enterprise. Especially the finance side of this equation. IMO...Wall Street in conjunction with "The City" has been the driver of the Deep State bus from it's beginnings.
Academia, the sciences(DARPA grants), intel/security, Congressional, Justice Dept., Hollywood, etc., etc....
edited in hyperlinks for each example I mentioned.
You think I'm just making this shit up? That there's no way I had prior knowledge of these things...and I'm just now "googling" furiously for back up?
Actually I'm just searching for links that work now...a lot of my past bookmarks are dead links. A lot of what I've read on these subjects is offline in books.

Opened the can of worms, didn't you?
That's why I was making the list. Everyone is in on the deep state so far except three writers, SKKin, and Airportwo.
the " deep state " has been around since the first caveman got a secretary
^^AirportTwo could be a gatekeeper, though. Knows more than he is telling.
what percentage of 'deep staters' are also 9/11 'truthers'?
It’s 100%
We Deep Staters keep records and shit on that.
Don't worry missk, in another month I'll be pretty much out of your hair. My short term medical leave is about up. Shortly after that ends, my corporate overlords have decreed that my current work schedule(that has given me all this free time over the past couple of decades) is no longer feasible. So chinup.
^ Didn't realize you were on medical leave. Taking some good medication?
Older book on the foundations(?) of the Deep State...or not.
C. Wright Mills
The Power Elite
https://www.amazon.com/Power-Elite-C...mg_top?ie=UTF8First published in 1956, The Power Elite stands as a contemporary classic of social science and social criticism. C. Wright Mills examines and critiques the organization of power in the United States, calling attention to three firmly interlocked prongs of power: the military, corporate, and political elite. The Power Elite can be read as a good account of what was taking place in America at the time it was written, but its underlying question of whether America is as democratic in practice as it is in theory continues to matter very much today.

Another reading suggestion...
The War State by Michael Swanson- published 2013
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EWLGXHW...&pd_rd_w=f2jkqToday when you factor in the interest on the national debt from past wars and total defense expenditures the United States spends almost 40% of its federal budget on the military. It accounts for over 46% of total world arms spending. Before World War II it spent almost nothing on defense and hardly anyone paid any income taxes. You can't have big wars without big government. Such big expenditures are now threatening to harm the national economy. How did this situation come to be?
In this book you'll learn how in the critical twenty years after World War II the United States changed from being a continental democratic republic to a global imperial superpower. Since then nothing has ever been the same again. In this book you will discover this secret history of the United States that formed the basis of the world we live in today.
By buying this book you will discover:
- How the end of European colonialism created a power vacuum that the United States used to create a new type of world empire backed by the most powerful military force in human history.
- Why the Central Intelligence Agency was created and used to interfere in the internal affairs of other nations when the United States Constitution had no mechanism for such imperial activities.
- How national security bureaucrats got President Harry Truman to approve of a new wild budget busting arms race after World War II that is still going on to this day.
- Why President Eisenhower really gave his famous warning against the "military-industrial complex."
- Why during the Kennedy administration the nuclear arms race almost led to the end of the world during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
- How President Kennedy tried to deal with what had grown into a "permanent government" of power elite national security bureaucrats in the executive branch of the federal government that had become more powerful than the individual president himself.
In this book you will discover this secret history of the United States that formed the basis of the world we live in today.
Good to put this up SKkin,
I had posted about C. Wright Mill's book "The Power Elite" more than a couple of times.
If you read this book today, you would think it was written this year - but it was written in the 1950s.
