To vaccinate or not, this is the question.
Australia says vaccinate.
It seems these antivaxers fall into the conspiracy theorist category.

^ I believe 100% in vaccination
However, I also believe in free speech.
Damm it, I still have the mark on my forehead where I picked my chicken pox.
Thankfully the kids today don't have to put up with Chicken Pox / Mumps / Measles, or tetanus, meningococcal, Hep A or B, hooping cough etc.
Worst, I've haven't had a flu shot since I was in short pants. Got it this year ... a Month later and I'm still coughing.
Will be fronting up for the jab next year. But free speech, can't deny that.
^ agree with David, 100%.
what about when it is outright lying ?Originally Posted by David48atTD
Well done Australia. These fucking idiots should be shot but failing that, they should be sent to isolated penal colonies where there is no chance of their having contact with anyone who isn't equally dim.
You can't run into a crowded theater, yell 'Fire!', and then claim 'but free speech!' when people are injured in the ensuing panic and stampede.
Same thing with this anti-vax bullshit. It's egregious codswallop and it causes actual harm.
Right, free choice. I should have the right to chose to drive on the left side in Germany, but on the right side in GB.Originally Posted by HuangLao
I might be wrong because I haven't looked into it fully, but, I believe there is no compulsion to immunise your child.
BUT, usually the non-immunised child is not allowed entry into most/all (?) child care centres ... no idea about schools.
Nor are the parents of the child entitled to the modest tax benefits which flow to the parents of a child who is fully immunised for age.

Sadly most Western countries abandoned free speech when they passed hate speech laws.Originally Posted by David48atTD

Australia has really upped its game over the last few years.
They have fuked off the illegal Boat people, they are deporting criminals who are not Australian citizens and they are stopping fooking idiots like this anti-vaxer from entering.
Further more, the courts are really handing down some stiff sentences for crime, things are looking up.
Just a shame that the rest of the world still has to endure your presence.
The next thing they should do is to stop that ugly scank seppo hoe Kathy Griffin from touring Australia with her Anti-trump show.
As if we give a fuk.
I very much doubt if anybody on this thread is an expert in this space or has researched the claims and counter claims beyond a 5 minute wiki search (if that...), yet there are very strong opinions being offered on silencing somebody - just sheep mentality...
If you don't know, and we don't, then why jump to aggressively supporting one side or the other? Silencing somebody or a group, or supporting such actions, when you have no actual knowledge of the subject matter is a very dangerous sheep mentality.
In reply, I expect hyperbole and aggression from the usual suspects...
My suggestion is quite simply, educate yourself. One very good way to educate yourself is: listen to different sides of an argument, think about it then ask some questions from both sides (or more).
Cycling should be banned!!!
I've looked into it as a parent and the science is clear.
There is no other side of an argument to consider because there's no argument. It would be like saying that you can't accept that the sky is blue until you've considered whether or not it's actually magenta with fluorescent pink highlights - it just isn't.
It is a thorny one for sure.
The trade-off between free-speech and the protection of life/prevention of unnecessary death.
Some parallels with the trade-off between religious freedom and the right to withhold essential medical treatment from your child on sky-fairy grounds.
i think that a lot of people don't actually understand the concept of 'free speech'.
It's not a literal license to say anything and everything with no repercussion and it never has been.
I totally agree that free speech is widely misunderstood.
You cannot incite racial hatred for example because we have established norms of racial discrimination being eliminated.
You cannot libel or slander someone without risking facing legal recourse.
But when it comes to arguing a case against vaccination the rules of free speech would say that the facts should speak for themselves and discredit anti-vaxxers, who should not be prevented from preaching into the wind if only because we do protect the right to voice contentious opinion.
This is a valuable part of western society which other pseudo-modern societies such as China simply do not have.
Like, to take another example, I believe that climate change is real and is substantially caused by humans. But I would find it worrying if I heard that climate change deniers were being banned from voicing their opinions.
Here is my understanding :
The fact is that we don't understand the immune system 100%.
What we have is incomplete knowledge from which we make models. The current model states that more people are saved from death and/or disease by vaccination than would get sick or die if they were not vaccinated.
Unfortunately there is a sub-set of people who react to something in the vaccine (either the killed virus or the adjuvants, such as mercury) and these people can become brain-damaged or even die as a result.
However they are in a huge minority compared to the number of people who would get sick or die if they had not been vaccinated.
It is heartbreaking, I'm sure we all agree. And it seems rather crazy to continue, when you see individual stories, but in the future when we understand the whole process better, these cases will hopefully fall to almost zero.
