Why is Boris seeking a trade deal at all with the EU if, as you say, the EU is no longer of value or interest.

Do you know what the UK are seeking as part of the trade deal? Do you know why they are seeking these?

I can happily move back to the UK with my wife if I so wish. I can happily stay in Germany if I wish. I can live in Thailand if I wish. I can even move between all 3 as I wish.

The UK does not need the EU largesse. Yes, some parts would make life easier, but once UK is gone, it’s gone, with or without the EU window dressing.
You know perfectly well that the EU will dig its heels in, just to deter others. The UK also understands this.
You should also understand that UK is determined to leave, no matter what.
End result, ask for the world in a gift wrapped basket. Take whatever you can get. There are areas that the EU still needs to satisfy for major members. The UK may, or may not co-operate.
Whatever. UK is leaving, with or without the EU candy.
Its good to know that you have choices, despite your longing for retirement, somewhere, anywhere.

The fact remains, 17.6 million British people, mostly English, who constituted a demographic comprising the stupid, the deluded, the ignorant and the bigoted, credulously believed the egregious propaganda spewed out by charlatans, the mediocre and the tenth rate, looking to secure power by means not otherwise available to them.

The lies were apparent to we remainers, the intelligent, the reasoned and the knowledgeable, at the time but are even more apparent now after four long years of economic blight.

As Barnier said two days ago in commenting on the British backtracking on its agreements and their obstructive position in the trade negotiations,, reported in the press, there has been no measurable economic benefit to the UK stemming from the decision to leave the UK, a fact apparent to anyone with the meanest of intelligence including Farage who is silent on the subject. Barnier took the opportunity to repeat the statistic that defines the British madness, 7% of EU production is exported to the UK, 47% is exported by Britain to the EU.

But Chas, I'll ask you again, what is it that Britain will export to the world that it couldn't four years ago?

Brexit was the high water mark in British stupidity, the BoJo Circus government is its celebration. With luck COVID will bury them.

I am supposed to take the word of a man who bought a condo in Pattaya. A condo he has failed to sell in over 5 years, despite its luxury appointment, pool, and superior location?
Never have I claimed superior export opportunities for the UK. All along, I have rejoiced at the chance to leave, what was once, a useful trading cooperative, or common market.
Since then, it has become a federal nadir. An excuse to exercise collective socialist principles in the name of free trade.
If there is no political or socialist aspiration in the EU, why does it require a parliament? A collective trading body perhaps, but why a parliament?
Its about creating a closed shop to further EU power on a global basis. Only by wrapping the minor nations and others, in the east and south of the region, in a political strait jacket, will it be able to exercise such power.

My reservations have always been about the EUs real ambition to create a federal, socialist super power. Socialism does not work.

I have no desire to provide further financial bail outs to nations whose states do not fit the EU socialist ideal. To succeed UKPlc will have to reform and weed out extremists on both sides, and reform parliament.
The EU has proved intransigent on bilateral trade, believing, foolishly, that one size fits all for member states.
Now that UK is no longer a member of this despicable, underhand cabal, I am happy to move on, before the EU and the Euro both fail and collapse, taking all 27 states with it. Everything comes at a cost, but the biggest all have further to fall now.

Your fundamental misunderstanding Chas is what a socialist society is. The EU is based on capitalist market economy principles not socialist ones. I suggest you go and find out the difference.

Asked and answered. If you can’t see how far left the EU journey is traveling, it’s no wonder you support remain.

Poor Chas, he has no idea of what he is trying to say but is simply regurgitating, in no particular order, hackneyed cliches extracted from the UKIP/Tory loony play book of bigotry and ignorance.

The thing is, the entire civilised world, excluding the US, is in fact socialist, and the reason why it is perhaps the world's most successful doctrine is the not entirely insignificant fact it places the wellbeing of the citizen at its core.

Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, France, Australia, NZ, Singapore, inter alia, are all socialist states and I don't think anyone in possession of their faculties would say that they are somehow deficient in the sectors of commerce, public health and social welfare.

I think what Chas has in mind when he burbles on about "socialism" is some mythical, Orwellian construct of a centralised Marxist regime controlling the movement of people, money and capital that doesn't like eating roast dinners on a Sunday, or England for that matter, and infects the English lower classes with the idea they are not lumpen idiots.

He really is a silly little man.

I have often come across the type when having to engage with lower management personnel recruited from the forces. Almost universally, they are racist bigots, utterly hidebound and institutionalised to a degree thy cannot function outside of a hierarchical system. Although they affect a disdain for their superiors they generally end up articulating the sentiments expressed by them without really understanding what they mean, a bit like a parrot might do when it repeats what it might hear in the officers mess.

Poor Chas, he's like a closet gay telling bad jokes about queers.

Anything left of Enoch Powell is socialist to you.

One suspects you've lived your entire life craving conservative respectability to try and compensate for the fully merited disgust you feel for yourself.

Counselling or perhaps an intervention might be justified.

Socialism always fails because rigid minded civil servants and failed tellers end up living abroad. They elect for this option when they realise that their policy of spending other people’s money, depends on the money supply not running out.
When the money inevitably runs out, they run away to live abroad and let some other poor sap to pick up the pieces of their dereliction.

One would think the E.U. is probably further advanced down the track as far as having a more equitable and equal society than most of the world. Call it what you will, it is far better than the likes of the USA and other capitalist societies including some communist ones. Whilst the EU gets a few things wrong they also get a lot right. Especially for the more vulnerable in society.

Not that it comes as a surprise but instead of forward progress Britain is busy backpedaling,

(Reuters) - The United Kingdom has abandoned its plan to introduce full border checks with the European Union on Jan. 1 as British ministers face pressure from businesses not to increase chaos already caused by the coronavirus outbreak, the Financial Times newspaper reported.
Instead, Britain will introduce a temporary “light-touch regime” at ports such as Dover for incoming EU goods, the newspaper reported, adding that this will happen whether or not there is a Brexit free trade agreement with the EU.
The newspaper said that officials have conceded, however, that goods flowing to the EU from the UK could face full checks as they enter France.
Britain left the EU on Jan. 31 and has made very little progress in talks about a trade deal, negotiators have said.
The Financial Times cited unidentified officials as saying an announcement could be made as soon as Friday on the border checks ahead of Britain’s plan to ramp up preparations for a no-deal scenario in July.
The approach will be similar to no-deal arrangements drawn in September last year, which prioritised flow of goods over border formalities, the FT said.
Agricultural goods will not enter Border Inspection Posts (BIPs) in or near the port and animal products may not immediately be required to have health certificates, according to the plans reported by the newspaper.
The plans will let only controlled goods face immediate checks whereas industrial goods are expected to benefit from transitional measures delaying the need for customs declarations and postpone customs duty payments.
The development marks a turn from February when Britain said it planned to introduce import controls on EU goods at the border after its post-Brexit transition period ends on Dec. 31.

Barnier busy patting himself on the back, demanding a level playing field on fishing rules and regulations. In other words, give in to the French and the Spanish and agree with EU negotiating stance or we will not play any more.

At least until he has to return to the 27 member states with a handful of nothing. “The British refuse to play by our rules so the negotiating is now over”.
Exactly what Johnson has wanted all along.
