best leave them to it mm77.

yes the uk has failed to take full advantage of the freedoms offered by brexit, but the collapse of the country, endlessly predicted by the masochistic jeremiahs, defeatists and nihilists fatally piqued by the referendum result, never materialised and compared to its neighbours is not doing too bad considering the effects of covid lockdowns, putins war, inflation, the lemming like rush towards net zero, the middle east, and a generous benefit system that handsomely rewards dishonesty, apathy, shiftlessness and indolence.

but i am sure the kneeler and the slag will soon restore the country to its former glory.

So, for the umpteenth time, Tax, what is it the Uk can now sell that it couldn’t before Brexit?

A devalued currency, a contraction in production, rising unemployment, low productivity, a broken infrastructure, rivers of shit, increased bureaucracy, the highest level of taxation since forever, are all indicators of success?

    Tax, the country is fucked.

Since the UK left the EU in 2020, its goods exports to the EU have not performed any worse than to the rest of the world, and its services exports have grown strongly. How come? Headline UK trade numbers have been surprisingly robust after Brexit.

EU woos Labour with freedom of movement deal

Europeans aged 18 to 30 would be able to work, travel and study in UK and vice versa

The European Union has proposed a freedom of movement-style deal for young Europeans to appeal to a future Labour government.

The youth mobility scheme would allow Europeans aged 18 to 30 to come to Britain for up to four years to work, travel and study. It could pave the way for thousands of European waiters, baristas and au pairs to plug gaps in the British workforce.

Britons would also be able to take part in the reciprocal scheme by moving to the continent under the deal, proposed by the European Commission on Thursday.

Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s Brexit negotiator, said: “The United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union has hit young people in the EU and the UK who would like to study, work and live abroad particularly hard.

“Today, we take the first step towards an ambitious but realistic agreement between the EU and the UK that would fix this issue. Our aim is to rebuild human bridges between young Europeans on both sides of the Channel.”

The offer would probably appeal to Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, who has signalled that he would seek closer ties with the EU if his party wins the election.

    Youth mobility schemes

The Home Office has also engaged in discussions with some EU countries after being asked by Rishi Sunak’s Downing Street to agree more youth mobility schemes.

The UK already has reciprocal schemes with 10 non-EU countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan and Iceland.

They allow those eligible to travel and work in Britain without needing a sponsor or meeting other requirements, such as salary thresholds, without significantly contributing to net migration.

The European Commission said it was making the offer of an EU-wide deal because the UK had already spoken with a number of member states to discuss youth mobility. If a deal is reached, it would be Brussels’ first youth mobility treaty with a third country.

Under the bloc’s offer, Britain would have to agree to equal treatment on tuition and visa fees, and healthcare surcharges.

In an online Q&A of its proposals, the EU makes it clear that the scheme would not replace existing paths to obtaining visas and that either side would have the ability to reject applications because of threats to public security and health.

It is unlikely that negotiations will get under way immediately, with the EU’s 27 member states still required to agree on the Commission’s proposal.

The forthcoming European Parliament elections and general election are also likely to act as stumbling blocks to the talks beginning.

    ‘Failed Brexit project’

Industry leaders and Remain campaigners have been pushing for an EU-wide visa scheme to make it easier for young Britons to travel and work in the bloc, and vice-versa.

“This landmark intervention is a welcome acknowledgement of the immense impact that Brexit has had, not only on young Brits but young Europeans as well,” Naomi Smith, the chief executive of Best for Britain, said of the EU offer. “The UK Government must now respond in kind.

“Until a reciprocal EU-UK youth mobility scheme is formalised, our young people will continue to be robbed of the irreplaceable formative experiences their parents and older siblings enjoyed, because of a failed Brexit project they did not vote for.”

Charles Owen, of Seasonal Business in Travel, said: “A reciprocal youth mobility scheme is a win-win for both Europe and the UK, and in particular for struggling businesses suffering from chronic labour shortages, made worse by Brexit.

“Momentum is building to get this deal done and we implore the prime minister to talk to Industry and prepare for the upcoming negotiations appropriately. This is a serious economic and cultural opportunity for all.”

A Labour spokesperson said: “This is a proposal from the EU Commission to EU member states, not to the UK. It has come about because the UK government is reportedly approaching other European countries to try to establish mobility arrangements.

“Labour has no plans for a youth mobility scheme. We have already suggested some tangible ways that we would look to improve the relationship and deliver for British businesses and consumers, including seeking a veterinary agreement to tackle trade barriers, mutual recognition of professional qualifications and improved touring opportunities for artists.

“A Labour Government would seek to improve the UK’s working relationship with the EU within our red lines - no return to the single market, customs union or free movement.”

^ Last para makes Labour no more fit to govern than the Tories. All three are needed for the UK to recover from its spiral dive into a banana republic.

Brexiteers can spin figures as much as they like but quality of life has taken a dramatic turn for the worse in the UK.

That happened in the late 60's when they opened the doors for Idi Amin s refugees. The UK was never the same after that.

    Well there it is.

The real reason people voted for BREXIT.

And now the Europeans have departed to be replaced by Asians and Africans.

    Idiot move.

    Stuff and nonsense Prag.

In your innate racism, akin to most little Englanders, you seek to express change as a function of coons and their colours.

In truth the two 20th Century events that changed everything expediting migration between the less wealthy countries and those with the riches offering opportunity and betterment through the sale of their labour, were: air travel made affordable by wide bodied jets and the fall of the USSR empire removing the Iron Curtain.

The rest, as they say, is history.

brexit was nothing to do with racism. the racism card was just used by remainers as a convenient and very on trend stick, which which to cast aspersions on the true motives of brexiteers, which was to put a stop to britain being subsumed into an authoritarian federal superstate with decisions being made on our behalf by the manipulating and self interested movers and shakers in brussels.

as an island we have always been outsiders, going our own way and mostly going the right way. the eu sought to curb our independence and bring us into line. quite rightly we resisted it.

sadly, events since that glorious day of brexit, events both self inflicted and events out of our control have seriously muted the advantages we hope to achieve.

air travel made affordable by wide bodied jets and the fall of the USSR empire removing the Iron Curtain.
    nonsense.
the mass migration into the uk is the result of an overly generous benefit system, the inability of the home office to track arrivals and departures efficiently and a network of sympathetic activists, politicians and lawyers whose only aim is to make the government look weak, and the government certainly dont need any help on that front.

Don't be absurd tax. Brexit had everything to do with immigration.

Announced today trucks won't be searched to avoid traffic snarl up at Dover , sending an invitation to illegals. If I can read about this in a thai village pretty sure the traffickers are on it.

Fences around Eurotunnel and Calais highways pushed trafickers to the boats but this may alter if they can 'sell' an open goal, if clients freeze, asphyxiate they don' care they've sold the 'ticket'

The result was a consequence of the lower classes, the stupid, the deluded and the bigoted combining to vote together on a single issue that they believed posed a threat to their well being. And that issue was immigration represented by Turks, the entire Arab nation, East Europeans and Africans swamping Britain because the EU, dictated by a secret alliance between France and Germany, were jealous of Britain.

The sheer stupidity of this, and the ridiculous suggestion that membership of the EU somehow caused the post 2008 Bankster crash reign of Austerity supported by Osborne and Cameron, precipitated the greatest self inflicted mistake in British socio-economic-political history.

At least it does prove a point, the average English person is as fucking stupid as an American or Russian.

In other news, the EU wants to keep raping the seabed in UK marine protected areas. No surprise, they are slowly turning the Indian Ocean into a desert

EU Policy. Brussels picks fight over UK ban on sand eel fishing

The European Commission is demanding an explanation from the UK government over a biodiversity protection measure that bans the industrial fishing of sand eels in much of its territorial waters, a move which has upset Denmark, which holds the lion's share of the UK/EU post-Brexit quota.

The European Commission has requested talks with the UK government after London decided to shut down industrial sand eel fishing on environmental grounds, while in Brussels marine conservationists have launched a campaign demanding the EU ban destructive bottom trawling in its own marine protected areas.

The UK government and its devolved Scottish counterpart both announced the end of industrial sand eel fishing at the end of January. Today (16 April) the European Commission said it was triggering the dispute settlement mechanism in the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA).

Unless a satisfactory agreement is reached with 30 days, or more if both parties agree to extend talks, the EU may request an arbitration tribunal adjudicate on the “compatibility of the UK's measures” with provisions in the agreement, which the EU executive said called for an “evidence-based, proportionate and non-discriminatory” approach to marine conservation.

“The UK’s permanent closure of the sand eel fishery deprives EU vessels from fishing opportunities, but also impinges on basic commitments under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement,” EU commissioner for environment, oceans and fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius said.

Under the post-Brexit trade agreement, the EU fishing fleet retains reciprocal access to UK waters. Denmark holds over 90% of the combined EU/UK quota for the diminutive fish of around 160,000 tonnes, with around a third of this allocated to areas in UK waters, mostly Scottish.

“Measures are already in place to protect this important species, including by setting catches below the scientific advised levels and closed areas for protecting seabirds,” Sinkevičius said. The EU executive had been under pressure to act since Denmark and Sweden raised the issue at an EU Council summit of agriculture ministers in late February.

Reacting to the Commission's move, a government spokesperson told Euronews that the UK's ban on sand eel fishing was fully compliant with its obligations under the trade and cooperation agreement, and applied equally to UK and non-UK vessels.

"This was a necessary step to safeguard vulnerable seabird populations, including species like kittiwakes who are at serious risk, and builds on domestic measures already in place. The UK has not allocated any quota to fish sand eel to UK vessels in three years," the spokesperson said.

The same that day the Commission raised its objections to the UK measure to protect species that feed on sand eels, marine protection NGOs launched a campaign demanding an EU ban on the destructive practice of bottom trawling in marine protected areas.

In a report published today, the Marine Conservation Society, Seas At Risk and Oceana analysed data on commercial fishing by Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden and concluded that bottom trawling was still taking place in 90% of offshore EU marine protected areas, despite the 2023 EU Marine Action Plan that calls for phasing the practice out by 2030.

“Our campaign is putting a stop to ‘out of sight, out of mind’ when it comes to what EU governments are allowing in so-called protected waters,” said Tatiana Nuño, senior marine policy officer at Seas at Risk. “While EU politicians waste precious time with pre-election populist posturing, the biodiversity and climate crises rage on unabated.”
