I hope the UK doesn't end up as it was in the nationalist 1960's. The times when crossing your sevens made you a foreigner and pronouncing 'th' as 'zee' horrified the schools and neighbourhood. Worse was to come, when a European language was drilled out of you, accent and all only to become a compulsory subject to learn only a few years later. That era did wonders for my, and many other, childhoods as parents returned from protecting the nation in Europe.

Brexit, a blot on the landscape, the cancer of Europe, willed on by people blaming the EU for a very British mistake.

Reading this morning that the new Brexit Secretary has reiterated to the EU that no trade deal, no payment, and Barnier has also raised the potential problem of smuggling. Also read this in today's Sunday Times from a columnist that essentially mirrors my own views:

While, by comparison, about 10% of British planes probably fly over Irish airspace.

So this is another paper tiger, a chimera, a false threat occasioned by spite and pique, which has rightly been ridiculed across the world on social media.

And yet he is not alone. The entire process of negotiating our exit from the EU has been accompanied by much the same sort of stuff: empty threats and vindictiveness flung at us each week by the rabble of drunkards and lawyers the EU employs to make sure that anyone who wishes to leave the benighted institution gets first of all a punch in the face and then, later, a punch in the face.

I was for “leave” for reasons of democracy and sovereignty — but only just. And yet now I wonder who would want to be in a club like that. A club so terrified it will soon cease to exist that it will stoop to anything in its attempts to cow and bully those it sees as miscreants.

The Hungarians, the Poles, the Austrians, the Italians, the Catalans and pretty soon the Swedes. I think we’re in good company, right where we are, no matter how inept and credulous our government.

It is often said we should worry about the world we are leaving to the younger generation. I am more worried about the poor world, given the younger generation who will have custody of it."

The Irish PM said they plan to recruit 1000 more customs staff in case there is no deal.

The Irish government on Wednesday agreed to hire 1,000 customs and veterinary officials to deal with new trade rules between Britain and Ireland that are likely to come into effect once Britain’s Brexit transition deal ends in March 2021, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said.

In the event of a “no-deal” hard Brexit, which Varadkar described as unlikely, the government will make contingency arrangements, he told journalists.

“We do think that, with Brexit now eight months away and growing uncertainty about whether it will be possible to get a withdrawal agreement through Westminster, that we do need to change the gear and up our preparations when it comes to Brexit,” Varadkar said.

^^ The UK and Eire together with IoM and the channel islands have been part of a common travel area since 1923. Eire and the UK joined the EU at the same time so there was no change required. Now the UK is leaving but Eire is not, there is a requirement, although this only needs to be a customs border.

The simplest solution is to have the customs border between the island of Ireland and Britain but the DUP opposes this. Since they only have 10 votes in parliament who cares. They will vote against the government for ever more so wait until their use has diminished before agreeing to the inevitable. It's the tory way....

Tax, in citing cultural differences you are merely glossing over the truth, scarcely surprising given your membership of the geriatric and demented right wing of the loopy Kipper/Tory cadre.

The differences are stark, and in fact are not cultural, but something much more profound.
