China Daily I don't enjoy, based on my own experience. Press remains to be checked out.

I like these on the big screen.

    Thanks and Cheers.

Yea . . . except it isn't independent at all and belongs to the MSN.

Al Jazeera isn't a bad news source

    Down! Down boy.!

Something doesn't quite add up here. The RT I get is RT America and I had the impression they were broadcasting out of the Big Apple. They do a good Dennis Miller show. It may not be entirely neutral, is anybody these days ? The only thing they seem opposed to are the extremely wealthy non tax paying corporations, which is damned refreshing.

    You seem a tad insecure?

I'll make this clear one more time. I don't have a dog in this or any race. I'm looking at all this from a political science point of view. I'm always basically, for the time being, pretty much in pursuit of a good laugh. When wit is lacking I find another topic.

RT has some good stuff, Al Jazeera has some good stuff, Grauniad, BBC & NYT has some good stuff too. Fox rarely does, or any Australian media outlet.

Good point. RT has a few good stories and El Jazeera does some excellent investigative documentaries and like CGTN, dont look to them for any unbiased reporting on their respective governments. Australian TV tends to be too far left or right.
The truth is out there but it does take some winnowing if, as you say, you are looking for more than just some confirmation bias.

Leaked papers allege massive UK govt effort to co-opt Russian-language anti-Kremlin media & influencers to ‘weaken Russian state’
    18 Feb, 2021 18:32

For all its alarmism about Russian ‘propaganda’ and ‘misinformation’, the UK government appears to be behind a multi-million-pound push to boost negative coverage of the Russian state, both in Russia and neighbouring countries.

At a European Union summit in November 2017, then-UK prime minister Theresa May announced plans to designate Russia a “hostile” state, and pledged to spend in excess of £100 million over the next five years on tackling the alleged threat of Kremlin “disinformation” internationally.

Now, hacktivist collective Anonymous has released what appear to be internal UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) files that shed significant light on how vast and ominous these efforts can be.

According to the papers, Whitehall has sought contractors to covertly infiltrate media and civil society at multiple levels – all under the aegis of schemes to, among other things, improve literacy, promote cultural activities, ensure “balance and plurality” in media reporting, and counteract propaganda.

    Supporting anti-Kremlin media
One of these contractors, Zinc Network (more on them later) explained in its pitch documents that it was in the process of “delivering audience segmentation and targeting support for two of Russia’s leading independent media outlets – Meduza and MediaZona”.

The former is a Russian-language online newspaper and news aggregator based in Riga, Latvia. The latter is an investigative platform focused on Russia’s judicial, law enforcement and penal system, founded by two members of controversial punk rock band Pussy Riot.

As the pair “[lacked] the expertise and tools” to “promote content effectively to new audiences”, Zinc was working diligently to ensure their output reached as many eyes and ears as possible. In the process, the contractor conducted “weekly mentoring sessions with specialists from the outlets”, “adjusting their editorial and commercial strategy accordingly” and creating “common framings of issues.”

Prior to the release of these documents, any suggestions that Meduza and MediaZona – which both consistently publish content highly critical of the Russian state – were not only privately coordinating to ensure a consistent editorial line, but receiving assistance from a UK government contractor to do so, would surely have been dismissed as Russian propaganda, conspiracy theory, fake news, or worse.

It seems likely Meduza’s relationship with Whitehall, direct or indirect, conscious or unconscious, extends far further than this collaboration. Several contractors reference the outlet in the leaked files, in relation to numerous other FCDO-funded and directed projects.

Row as NGO Amnesty says Navalny not ‘prisoner of conscience’ due to far-right views & Western commentators claim RT is behind it!
    24 Feb, 2021

A furious online debate is raging after an NGO struck a jailed Russian opposition figure from its list of political prisoners over past xenophobic statements. Obviously, for conspiracy-loving commentators, RT must be to blame.

On Tuesday evening, a statement from Amnesty International was published by Grayzone journalist Aaron Mate. In it, the human rights group said that, “in light of new information that has emerged recently, [it is] no longer able to consider Alexey Navalny as a prisoner of conscience.” While they will continue to call for his release from prison, where he is serving a sentence for fraud, they said that the change in status was due to “the fact that he advocated violence and discrimination and he has not retracted such statements.”

Confirming the decision, the organization’s Russia and Eurasia media manager Aleksandr Artemyev said: “Yes, we will no longer use the phrase ‘prisoner of conscience’ when referring to him, since our legal and political department studied Navalny’s statements from the mid-2000s and concluded that they qualify as hate speech,” he told MediaZona.

The decision prompted a wave of recriminations online from commentators and journalists, many of them supportive of Navalny. Curiously, though, only some of the anger was aimed either at the anti-corruption campaigner’s previous statements, or at Amnesty International. The rest, somewhat surprisingly, was directed at RT.

it seems to me that not many know that navalny is an avowed nationalist & racist and not just a blonde guy who likes to gently kiss his blonde wife before going to jail and watches “rick & morty”. so here’s a little thread and some of it is pretty personal.

How the UK secretly funded a Middle East news agency

Historical documents released by the Foreign Office shed new light on how a secretive team of British civil servants tried to influence the international media during the Cold War.

In one intriguing episode the UK government in the late 1960s persuaded the British-based news agency Reuters to set up a reporting service in the Middle East, funding it surreptitiously via the BBC.

This was contrived by the Information Research Department (IRD), a shadowy section created within the Foreign Office in 1948 to fight the propaganda battle with the Soviet Union. It covertly produced anti-communist material.

In 1969, Reuters agreed to establish a new office in the politically-volatile Middle East, at the secret request of the IRD. It would provide news copy in English and Arabic about local and world events, for reuse by newspapers and broadcasters in the region.

"This is because he refused to distance himself from xenophobic statements.
It is among other things a video that was recorded 15 years ago where the Putin critic who was highly respected in his circles compared immigrants to cockroaches.

According to Amnesty's definition, a prisoner of conscience is someone who never incites hatred or violence.

"Navalny has not openly distanced himself from his Youtube videos so our view is that he still holds on to them," Amnesty spokesman Alexander Artemev told the BBC."
