Marine Le Pen in Lebanon row after refusing to wear headscarf

Im liking Le Pen more and more

Fuckin THIS is how women should protest.

Beirut (CNN)France's Marine Le Pen canceled a meeting with Lebanon's Grand Mufti Tuesday after refusing to wear a headscarf.

The far-right presidential candidate is on a two-day tour of Lebanon where she is courting Franco-Lebanese votes ahead of the first round of French elections on April 23.

Le Pen told reporters that she was surprised by the requirement. But a spokesman for the Grand Mufti said Le Pen had been informed of the need to wear a head covering before the meeting.

Le Pen said she had met the Grand Mufti of Al-Azhar during a visit to Egypt in 2015 without covering her head.

"I met the grand mufti of Al-Azhar," she told reporters. "The highest Sunni authority didn't have this requirement, but it doesn't matter."

"You can pass on my respects to the grand mufti, but I will not cover myself up," she insisted.

Le Pen has been outspoken in her opposition to the headscarf and has stated that she would ban all religious symbols in public places.

A spokesman for Lebanon's Sunni religious leader, Grand Mufti Abdel Latif Derian, told CNN that Le Pen had been informed of the need to wear a head covering prior to the meeting.

"I personally greeted her at the door of the Edict House and wanted to hand her a white headscarf that was in my hand, she refused to take it," Khaldoun Awas explained.

"I urged her to put it on, she refused and said she would not put it on and walked out without attending the previously agreed upon meeting with the Mufti. The Edict House regrets such inappropriate behavior at such meetings."

Shortly after the incident, Florian Philippot, the vice president of Le Pen's Front National Party tweeted: "In Lebanon, Marine refuses to wear the veil. A beautiful message of freedom and emancipation sent to women in France and the world!"

The burqa and the niqab, a full face veil worn by some Muslim women, have been prohibited in public areas in France since 2011. Headscarves and other "conspicuous" religious symbols were banned from French schools in 2004.

Mayors in some French towns sparked controversy and protests last summer when they banned women from wearing burkinis on beaches in the wake of the Nice terror attack. The ban was later overturned.

CNN's Ghazi Balkiz reported from Beirut. James Masters wrote from London. Stephanie Halasz contributed to this report.

Marine Le Pen stirs headscarf controversy in Lebanon

France's far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has sparked controversy on the last day of her Lebanon visit, walking away from a meeting with the country's top Sunni Muslim religious leader after refusing to wear a headscarf.

The leader of National Front (FN) party on Tuesday arrived at Sheikh Abdellatif Deryan's office in the capital, Beirut, and was offered a white shawl to cover her hair. Le Pen promptly refused, walked towards her car and left.

Al Jazeera's Natasha Ghoneim, reporting from the Beirut, said that critics accused Le Pen, whose party takes an anti-immigrant stance, of staging the incident as a kind of stunt.

"Observers, pundits and voters here say that they believe that this was planned on her part because it would play very well to her far-right base at home, and also because they say it might detract from a growing scandal she is facing," Ghoneim said.

The presidential candidate is facing a corruption scandal as French police searched on Monday the Paris-based headquarters of FN in relation to a probe into alleged misuse of EU funds allocated to her as a member of the European Parliament.

"Everybody expected her to spark a new controversy, and right now Le Pen is embroiled in a new scandal, so ... people will perceive that as an attempt to divert attention from the legal consequences of her actions over the past few years," Yasser Louati, a human rights and civil liberties activist in Paris, told Al Jazeera.

"This was a trap and a set-up because she wanted to send a message to her own voters and supporters that she somehow refused to respect the local customs in a Muslim-majority country."

    'Le Pen was informed'

Speaking to journalists as she walked away from the meeting, Le Pen said she had met in the past with the Grand Mufti of Egypt's Al Azhar, one of the world's leading Sunni clerics, without having to wear a veil.

    The Veil - REWIND

"So I have no reason to," she said, adding that she had told the grand office's office on Monday that she would not wear a headscarf.

"They did not cancel the meeting, so I thought they would accept that I will not wear the scarf," Le Pen said.

"They wanted to impose this on me, to present me with a fait accompli. Well, no one presents me with a fait accompli."

In a statement on Tuesday, the press offfice for the Grand Mufti said it "had informed the presidential candidate, through one of her assistants, of the need to cover her head when she meets his eminence, according to the protocol assumed by Dar al-Fatwa", the highest Sunni authority in Lebanon.

"Dar al-Fatwa officials were surprised by her refusal to conform to this well-known rule," the statement added.

I like Marine, she has nice legs that are both shapely and strong. I hope she is the new President of France as she is easily better qualified than Mr. Hollande who is fat, wears spectacles and is a "champagne socialist".

I think it's very disrespectful of her. When in Rome (or in this case Lebbanon) and all that.
OK, she is opposed to the headscarf in France, fair enough, but when she is in another country she should respect their customs.
In Thailand do you go around pointing at things with your feet?

Some people have class, or at least respect other's traditions. Others do not.

le pen wasnt in saudi arabia where it is de rigeur to cover up, she was in lebanon where it is not.

as she said, she has previously visited egypts grand mufti, and a head cover was not necessary.

lebanons grand mufti was making a political statement which backfired by asking her to cover her head, and le pen was making a political statement by refusing to wear one, a statement that will probably do her election campaign no harm at all much to the chagrin on of the grand mufti.

whilst i am all for a shake up of the political scene in europe, if le pen were actually to gain power, it would be a black day for france if not the whole of europe. she is even more dangerous than trump.

europes liberal left, by ignoring the concerns of the public for many years, will have only themselves to blame if the swing to the right which seems to be gaining momentum throughout europe lurches uncontrollably to the extreme right.

but at least the swing is to the right and is restoring some balance.

All a silly gimmick from Le Pen.

    Non-story.

The Queen's get up was bloody ridiculous though.

Looks like she's got mumps or something.

I think she is more concerned about what a photo of her in a headscarf will do to her credibility.

Leb women when in Australia don't partake in the Australian way of life and culture.
The Lebs treat local Australians with contempt, not partaking in topless beach attire.
Fkn dirty Leb whores won't get their tits out in Sydney's Cronulla beach.
    No respect for local customs.

Yes, but if she is elected there will be an immediate 10% increase in the value of the Pound as Europe shits itself and that is very good for me. And, you too. So, stop moralising and pray for her to succeed. You know it makes sense !
