That is a fair question Snubby.

I fail to see why people who have nothing to hide actually worry about this stuff.

The Government know everything already so the innocent person aint gunna get a visit from the CIA.

They are way to busy catching terrorists hopefully.

Well Loopy, i actually look at it this way.

If we mere plebs know about much of this secret stuff that the Government is doing i would suggest we know fuk all.

It must go way way deeper than we will ever know.

But as long as it used to catch the Bad guys it's all good.

Ya can never trust ya Government though EH.

^^Yep. Can't say I even think about it. Last posted on FB about eight years ago, don't have a camera on my desktop, have a fifteen year old phone which may have a camera - I've never checked. Only public forum I post on is TD.

and tweery the majority are just like you and in that boat - they are happy to watch the television , absorb the advertisements , discuss dancing with the x factor at work and parrot whatever theme is on their favourite talkback radio

it is the people who don't think they way they are told to that have the most cause for worry - even though they may not break the rulses , the fact they are not conforming is an issue

Qu'on me donne six lignes écrites de la main du plus honnête homme, j'y trouverai de quoi le faire pendre
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Ah the oft used excuse for big brother apologists. Trust me! If your innocent you'll be ok mate.
But it is true though innit.

I don't really get all the drama around government surveillance. The purpose of the activity is to catch terrorists. We pay a small price in our privacy but we get the dividends in security of our public places like city centres and vital infrastructure. Only yesterday a Christmas day multiple target terrorist attack on Melbourne was foiled.

If there was ever any evidence that the government was using the information it gathers for more sinister purposes then THAT would be a movie. But if they are only using it for the purposes advertised then I don't really give a flying dingo's arsehole if some computer program at ASIO or the CIA is scanning my emails for terror buzzwords.
But they are! That's the point. Just two days ago there was an article about the Aus government now trying to use your meta data it collected to catch online pirates.

The excuse for collecting metadata was catching pedos and terrorists..... didnt take them long, huh?

Cranked up the Snowden flic tonight.

Predictable load of Hollywood fluff I thought. Hollywood movies paint everything in black and white. Here we have this sainted and innocent angel motivated by only the highest morals torn to the soul and driven by his conscience to expose the evil intelligence gathering organisation committing the heinous crime of prying into peoples facebooks - gasp - cue comparisons with Nazi Germany and Nuremberg trials in the script (groan).

There is no suggestion of course of any possible baser motive such as retributive employee disgruntlement or shallow desire for notoriety, infamy, fame etc as that is not going to make much of a movie protagonist.

There is no discussion of the impact on security of your fellow citizens of effecting a major betrayal of your national security organisation which immediately curtails their intelligence gathering activity.

These security breaches are going to happen form time to time and the best thing to come out of it is tightening of information handling practices to prevent further breaches. It seems that the fictional Hollywood puff-piece beatification of the likely self-serving tosser who should be strung up is just another small part of the price involved in this process.

What is wrong with using internet traffic monitoring techniques to catch folk up to other non-terrorist related nefarious activities anyway?

If the initial snooping is done by a computer program and human intervention only occurs once an algorithm has established just cause to have a further look then I would not say the average citizen's privacy is impinged upon to any great degree. Of course these things require oversight and privacy is important but so is law and order and national security.

The other aspect of this massive amount of data collected is the security within which it is held.
When will it get stolen or leaked to multinationals, global conglomerates, their advertising departments and all the rest of that shit.
