Facebook extends Trump's suspension until at least Biden inauguration


Facebook is extending Trump’s suspension indefinitely, at least for until Biden’s inauguration, following the president’s comments about Wednesday’s riots at the Capitol.


“His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook Thursday. “We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.”

The company had initially locked Trump from accessing his Facebook and Instagram accounts for 24 hour’s Wednesday night.


The decision to extend the suspension indefinitely is a marked change from Facebook’s previous hands-off approach to political content, even when the president previously appeared to encourage violence.

Republicans and Democrats are blaming Trump for inciting the deadly riots at the Capitol.

A growing number of lawmakers are calling on the United States government to immediately remove President Donald Trump from office for the safety of the nation, one day after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol.


“It’s time to invoke the 25th Amendment and to end this nightmare,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois said Thursday, becoming the first Republican to call for invoking it. “The president is unfit and the president is unwell.”


And Democrats are also demanding Trump’s removal, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Patty Murray of Washington state, the No. 3 Senate Democrat, who both threw their weight behind invoking the 25th Amendment. A growing number of Democrats are also calling for impeachment, even with only two weeks left in Trump’s term and both chambers scheduled to be on recess until President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.


“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president. This president should not hold office one day longer,” Schumer said in a statement.


“The quickest and most effective way — it can be done today — to remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th Amendment. If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president,” he said.


Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), the chair of the House Armed Services Committee, on Thursday also called on Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president, while Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) began circulating articles of impeachment.


The responsibility for invoking the 25th Amendment falls on the vice president and Cabinet.


Kinzinger, who has been sounding the alarm about Trump’s dangerous and false rhetoric for weeks, is the first Republican to publicly call for invoking the 25th Amendment — a decision he said he came to with a “heavy heart.” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) — who, unlike Kinzinger, supported removing Trump from office during the impeachment trial last year — has so far not embraced the idea.


But some GOP officials have begun discussing deploying the drastic option, according to multiple reports, while some administration officials have already resigned in protest.

Kinzinger, along with many Republicans, directly blamed Trump for inciting the violence that led to yesterday’s deadly riots at the Capitol and then refusing to denounce it forcefully. Meanwhile, all three major social media platforms — Twitter, Facebook and Instagram — have suspended Trump’s accounts over his rhetoric.

“The president has become unmoored. Not just from his duty. Or even his oath. But from reality itself,” Kinzinger said. “It is for this reason that I call for the vice president and members of the Cabinet to ensure the next weeks are safe for the American people. And that we have a sane captain of the ship.”

Kinzinger, a 42-year-old Air Force veteran, has long pushed back on Trump’s foreign policy moves. But while most of the Republican Party was still paralyzed by Trump’s brazen attempts to overturn the election in the immediate aftermath of Nov. 3, Kinzinger was one of the few Republicans willing to stand up to the president.

In an interview on MSNBC, Kinzinger — who some think could run for Senate or governor in 2022 — said he wasn’t concerned about the potential political blowback for crossing Trump.

“I've been to combat. This is political combat. I just need to be able to look at myself in the mirror. I don't need this job,” Kinzinger said. “I like it because I like being able to impact things and represent the 16th district of Illinois. If it's time to move on, it's fine. I've been here ten years. Do what's right and it makes it a lot more peaceful in your life.”

Twitch disables Trump's channel following chaos in D.C.

Twitch, the Amazon-owned live video streaming platform, disabled President Trump's account, a spokesperson confirmed to Axios on Thursday.

Why it matters: It's the latest in a string of platform efforts to take action on Trump's accounts following his calls for violence that resulted in the historic riot at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.


Snapchat was the first to disable the president's account Wednesday.


Facebook said Thursday it banned Trump's account indefinitely, but at least for two weeks.


Twitter froze Trump out of his account for breaking the platform's rules, and may be ban him indefinitely if he breaks the company's rules again.

YouTube said it will start applying strikes to Trump's account and other channels that post videos pushing misinformation about the election results.

Shopify, the e-commerce platform, removed two online stores affiliated with the president.


What they're saying: “In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel," a spokesperson from Twitch told Axios.


"Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President's incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence."
