    Dilemma ?

British government wants Hizb-ut-Tahrir on terror list

    Anna Danielsen Gille

If it is up to the government of Britain, it should in future not be possible for the Sunni movement Hizb-ut-Tahrir to gather for meetings or other activities on British soil.

It wants the movement branded a terrorist organisation, writes Reuters and Sky News.

According to the interior ministry, Hizb-ut-Tahrir is anti-Semitic.

"They incite terror and actively promote it, including by celebrating and celebrating the horrific attacks of October 7," British Home Secretary James Cleverly said.

The proposal requires the support of a majority in parliament. The government is aiming for the group to be banned from January 19.

I thought Hizb-ut-Tahrir already had been banned a few years back but apparently not.

Many years ago, I went to a talk by some members of the group (I knew someone who was a member and he later became one of its leaders in the UK). Although holding the talk was seen as controversial at the time (and some attendees were there to complain that the talk actually went ahead), I don't recall anything that was said at the talk being controversial at the time. But times change.

Praising and celebrating deadly attacks is distasteful but does not in-and-of-itself constitute terrorism but I suppose they are praising the 'wrong' side. Encouraging terrorism is wrong and probably illegal already in the UK unless, perhaps, you encourage it in Syria, Russia or Iran.

One can argue that the Israeli settlers have been causing terrorism for years....

...or is nobody allowed to say that in this polarised world.

In my experience anyone who goes against the state of Israel is gonna come a cropper.

I have a unpopular but not uncommon opinion that Israel was the sole purpose of WW2.

Who wants to go back down that road.

I'd much prefer the Israelites in charge of the holy land than than the other religions and ideology groups around the world.

    That's about it.

    All this "terrorist" labeling !

Norway hasn't labeled Hamas as "terrorists"...yet. Because they haven't acted outside Palestine....yet.

But I think I posted this with 'Freedom of Speech' in mind.

when did a definition of terrorist require activity outside of one’s own country?

    I don't know

I don't even know the definition of a terrorist.

But there is probably ...a lot.

From people demonstrating to suicide bombers via Nelson Mandela.

One man's terrorist is the next man's freedomfighter, as they say.

So...could it be that someone sees Palestine as a legitimate area for Hamas to operate in ?

    For your information:

    Terrorist designation

Designated Hamas as a terrorist organization
Designated the military wing of Hamas as a terrorist organization

The United States designated Hamas as a terrorist organisation in 1995, as did Canada in November 2002,[554] and the United Kingdom in November 2021.[49]

    The
European Union so designated Hamas's military wing in 2001 and, under US pressure,[555] designated Hamas in 2003.[556]
Hamas challenged this decision,[557] which was upheld by the European Court of Justice in July 2017.[558]

Japan[559] and New Zealand[560] have designated the military wing of Hamas as a terrorist organization.[561]

The organization is banned in Jordan.[562]

Hamas is not regarded as a terrorist organization by Afghanistan, Algeria, Iran,[563] Russia,[564] Norway,[x] Turkey, China,[566] Egypt, Syria, and Brazil.[567][568][569][excessive citations]

"Many other states, including Russia, China, Syria, Turkey and Iran consider the (armed) struggle waged by Hamas to be legitimate."
    [570]

According to Tobias Buck, Hamas is "listed as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US and the EU, but few dare to treat it that way now" and in the Arab and Muslim world it has lost its pariah status and its emissaries are welcomed in capitals of Islamic countries.[571]

While Hamas is considered a terrorist group by several governments and some academics, others regard Hamas as a complex organization, with terrorism as only one component.[572][573]
    Or misinformation

    For my information:

"In 2006, Norway explicitly distanced itself from the EU proscription regime, claiming that it was causing problems for its role as a 'neutral facilitator.'"[565

Personally I think it's a sign of progress that the Sunni and Shi'a actually agree on something.
