^ off topic - but, the line is long. Take a ticket and get in line - Wait time is greater than five years - yup, gotta whole lot of folks that joined the queue before you.

The average wait for all preference immigrants grew from about 2 years and 10 months in 1991 to about 5 years and 8 months in 2018 — a 97 percent increase. Overall wait times for immigrants have grown much longer over the past three decades.Jun 18, 2019

The Democrats have Trump to thank for their existential collapse.

    JANET DALEY
    8 FEBRUARY 2020 • 1:00PM

Last week, the Democratic party managed to appear, by turns, laughably incompetent, incorrigibly pompous, irresponsibly petulant, and tactically clueless. That’s quite a record.

They do, of course, have a plausible explanation for this derangement. They are faced with a phenomenon that no sane, grown-up American politician ever expected to encounter. As Donald Trump unforgettably demonstrated in his address to the nation last Thursday (not a press conference, as he made clear, but a “celebration” of his impeachment acquittal), this is not political life as we have known it.

If anybody is to have a chance of countering - or even surviving - this new thing that has replaced traditional democratic culture, an entirely different way of relating to the country will be necessary.

What should have begun in Iowa was the re-emergence of the Democrats: they would, at last, be the top line of the broadcast news. From now on, all the drama and suspense would be with them. So what happened? They are the top news story for all the wrong reasons.

OK – so it was a technical glitch. But it looked unforgivably amateurish in a country that prizes professionalism very highly. (If you can’t run a primary, how can you expect to run a country?) Even worse, it seemed somehow in keeping with the shambolic contradictions of their candidates’ positions.

Can somebody tell me – are they a socialist party now (Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren)? Or traditional Democrats with blue collar roots (Joe Biden)? Or new centrists with a dash of identity politics (Pete Buttigieg)? Do they want to go back to the old assumptions about America being a moderate country with infinite respect for its institutions? Or spring into Leftwing radicalism with socialised healthcare and wealth redistribution which would have been unthinkable from a mainstream party not very long ago?

In truth, it is not just the advent of Trump that has brought about this existential collapse. Any Republican who had defeated Hillary Clinton and her version of what the Democratic party stood for, would have had almost as devastating an effect because it was the decision to discard the old loyalties to what my parents’ generation used to call “the little people” that was at the heart of it.

To base your message on an appeal to that tiny proportion of highly qualified, privileged women who are determined to break “glass ceilings” when the women of the Rust Belt are worrying about putting food on the table...

But we know all this now. And the Democrats know it too. They just don’t know what to do instead. What do you say to people whose industries have gone and whose hopes for a better future – which was once the great American birthright – have been trashed? You say what Trump says: we’ll bring the jobs home by fighting the dirtiest trade war imaginable against the countries that have stolen them. Or what? The Democrats clearly have no persuasive alternative to this or they would use it, wouldn’t they?

The traditional voters who have deserted them assume that either there is no other answer, or that the party that once represented their concerns isn’t interested in them anymore: that it has found a new home with metropolitan liberals who hold diversity and the rights of minorities to be more important than finding a solution to the terrifying consequences of post-industrialisation.

But even with that said, there is something uniquely impossible to grapple with in the Trump ascendancy. What he has done is nothing less than make the currency of democratic politics redundant. What was on display last Thursday in his vindictive diatribe against everybody who had ever dared to challenge him was a quintessential example of the new dispensation under which all presidential hopefuls must operate.

Democracy used to be about argument – that was the essence of it. Proponents of differing ideas and convictions competed with one another for the support of the electors who (in theory) considered the worth of the various proposals and chose between them. Lots of other stuff came into this, of course: inherited loyalties (many people who lived through the Depression would never have voted for any party other than the one that had been led by Franklin Roosevelt), specialised interests (the gun lobby), or local economic concerns (farming, mining).

In spite of all that, there was at the core of the process, the idea that voters could be persuaded to change their minds through evidence and debate. As an individual, over the course of an election campaign – and even more often, over the course of a lifetime – one could re-assess one’s political position.

I went on precisely such a journey myself, when life experience moved me from the Marxist Left to the free market Right. I simply decided that the former led to authoritarianism and shared poverty, while the latter was conducive to mass prosperity and individual freedom. Shifts are not always quite so cataclysmic: you don’t have to decide that you were wrong all along before, just that this moment and these circumstances demand a different answer. This happens to electorates all the time in a healthy, mature democracy.

Between them, both Donald Trump’s personality cult and Hillary Clinton’s identity politics have undermined this. Trump has done it in the most obvious way by playing the demagogue’s game: only he personally can save the country with his inimitable gift for “making deals” and destroying rivals as he did in business. Forget about theories and principles: it’s all about how the leader handles his relationships with other leaders. Hillary’s identity pitch is less clearly sinister but it comes to the same end.

Politics isn’t about what you believe: it’s about what you are. I could decide to stop being Marxist, but I can’t decide to stop being white. Arguments and debate are out. Blind trust in the Leader, or mystical identification with a tribe are in. Either way, it’s the end of the Age of Reason.

The Democrats have Trump to thank for their existential collapse
bitching about how unfair life is and how trump is a moron and so is anyone who dare say anything positive about him will never turn things over.

The traditional voters who have deserted them assume that either there is no other answer, or that the party that once represented their concerns isn’t interested in them anymore: that it has found a new home with metropolitan liberals who hold diversity and the rights of minorities to be more important than finding a solution to the terrifying consequences of post-industrialisation.
doing something about ^ though might because liberal socialism has never solved any problem, ever.

As an impartial bystander i have to say that Pelosi ripping up Trumps speech was more a reflection of how ineffectual the system is given the farce acted out over the impeachment. Perhaps its time to tweak things so there is a way to hold the unaccountable to account in future. Trouble is i can see the same impasse acted out if this were attempted.

I read that there are 35 seats in the senate up for election in November. Twenty-three of these seats are held by Republicans. If the 2018 election is any guide, Republican senators running for re-election may encounter a very pissed off electorate. Polls indicated that three-quarters of voters wanted witnesses and documents for the senate trial. The voters hopefully will remember the GOP's cowardly actions and mealy mouth responses they've given for voting for the way they did.

He already has. He went after him at the prayer breakfast,... Don Jr called him a “pussy” on Twitter, and called for his expulsion from the GOP.

No Chico, it doesn't effect me in anyway. Long ago realized that the politicos are in the game for personal gain - and naught more. Although quite possible that they did, at first, desire to help the American people, after tasting the monetary benefits they quickly fall in line with the machine.

Trump stood them all on their ears. An outsider with NO political history should never have been able to unseat the old boys network, he soundly defeated both the Bush and Clinton dynasties. Shouldn't have happened in any way, shape, manner or form, yet, He Did It. Ya, know - "Just Do It" and, damn, he did.

Aww, but he didn't win the popular vote - yea, but he sits in the White House - popular vote be damned. He Won. The game has rules and he read the rule book.

Remember - it just ain't gonna happen. Well, the results speak for themselves...

    • Withdrew from the horrible, one-sided Iran Deal.
    • Moved U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.
    • Protecting Americans from terrorists with the Travel Ban, upheld by Supreme Court.
    • Issued Executive Order to keep open Guantanamo Bay.
    • Concluded a historic U.S.-Mexico Trade Deal to replace NAFTA. And negotiations with Canada are underway as we speak.

    • Imposed tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum to protect our national security.
    • Imposed tariffs on China in response to China’s forced technology transfer, intellectual property theft, and their chronically abusive trade practices.
    • Net exports are on track to increase by $59 billion this year.
    • Improved vetting and screening for refugees, and switched focus to overseas resettlement.
    • We have begun BUILDING THE WALL. Republicans want STRONG BORDERS and NO CRIME. Democrats want OPEN BORDERS which equals MASSIVE CRIME.

You posted up his bullshit when you posted that inane list of "accomplishments".

You sort of forgot things like destroying the EPA and Financial regulation, leading to toxic dumping and toxic deficits, to name but two.
